Wife of Dalit youth killed in Tamil Nadu honor killing case commits suicide in Chennai.
CHENNAI: The 20-year-old wife of Praveen (26), who was allegedly killed by a five-member gang including the girl’s brother in a case of honor killing, committed suicide.
The girl, Sharmila, attempted to kill herself on April 14 and was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where she died without treatment on Monday night. Praveen’s mother Chitra said that Sharmila became upset after reading Praveen’s post-mortem report. Praveen’s family claimed that it was a suicide note left by Sharmila, in which she had written, “Wherever RC (Praveen) goes, I go. I don’t want this life without him.”
She said, “We all always kept an eye on her and tried to cheer her up every day, but I saw her reduced to a shell after reading the details of Praveen’s injuries and subsequent death in the post-mortem report ” However, family members said they were surprised by her decision as she was keen to re-join college this Monday and was looking forward to taking driving classes to learn to drive Praveen’s car. “She was also angry that her parents were ready to let her brother (the accused) out on bail while her life was ruined,” Chitra said. Praveen was a Dalit while Sharmila was from a backward class community. The family demands that the case of Praveen’s murder be transferred to CB-CID.
