West Bengal higher secondary results: Transgender ranks seventh in class 12 exam

Smaranya Ghosh, a transgender, secured the seventh rank in the West Bengal higher secondary (class-12) examination by scoring 490 of a total of 500 marks.
The results of the examination were declared a day before.
Smaranya, who hails from Hooghly district’s Janai, says she is “absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed” by her score.
She said, “I want to join the civil services or work as a professor and bring about a positive change in society for the transgender community as they are looked down upon by people. I want to change the mentality of people and create a better future for the next generation.”
She considered herself to be “very lucky” to have a supportive family, friends and teachers, Smaranya said, adding that she expected to be in the top 10 list .
“I never fixed time for studies but nothing would distract me when I studied. Also, I took a lot of mock tests,” said Ghosh who history, geography, economics and education with Bengali and English as compulsory subjects.
Whether she was judged over her sexual orientation, Ghosh said people would “talk behind me but I never allowed them to speak anything bad in my presence as I am strong enough to respond”.

On education, she said, “One should at least complete their basic education as it is the most powerful weapon.”
