Jail warder suspended over sexual assault charge

Trichy: A jail warder at Trichy central prison was suspended from service on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a transgender inmate.

According to a senior official from the prison department, K Mareeswaran, a grade 1 warder, was placed under suspension. The official said the 32-year-old transgender individual, who was incarcerated for a theft case, had been subjected to sexual abuse by Mareeswaran for the past one month. The incidents came to light after the transgender inmate filed a complaint with the prison authorities.

The inmate also submitted a petition to the district legal services authority in Trichy. In response to the complaint, an advocate commissioner, acting on the orders of the district court, visited the prisoner and conducted an inquiry.

The findings of the investigation were subsequently forwarded to director general of prisoners and correctional services Maheshwar Dayal in Chennai. Sources said that CCTV footage from the prison corroborated the sexual abuse claims. The prison department headquarters then issued an order suspending the warder. tnn
