New Delhi: All three transgender candidates who contested the Lok Sabha elections this time have lost their deposits, highlighting the challenges faced by this community to get political representation in the country. No transgender has won the Lok Sabha elections in India so far. All three transgender candidates contested as independents. Sunaina Kinnar, who contested from Dhanbad, got 3,462 votes. Rajan Singh, a candidate from South Delhi, got 325 votes. Durga Mausi, who contested from Damoh (Madhya Pradesh), got 1,124 votes. None of these transgender candidates could even come close to victory and all failed to save their deposit amount.
According to the rules of the Election Commission, the security deposit of candidates who fail to get at least one-sixth of the total valid votes is forfeited.
What were the results across the country?
The Election Commission of India has released the final results for all 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party has been declared victorious on 240 seats and Congress on 99 seats. Let us tell you that there are 543 members in the Lok Sabha, but after BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal from Surat was elected unopposed, counting was done for 542 seats.
According to the final results released on Wednesday, the NDA has crossed the majority mark and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to form the government for the third consecutive time. BJP candidates contested the elections in the name of Modi this time too, but the party was able to win 240 seats which is less than the figure of 272 seats for majority. In such a situation, BJP needs the support of NDA allies to form the government. (Input: also from Bhasha).
