Aligarh man accused of acid attack on 14-year-old girl nabbed after 21 yearsA man accused of an acid attack in Aligarh 21 years ago has been arrested by the police. The victim, Rukaiya Khatoon, was 14 at the time of the attack and had recently told the police that she had rejected the advances of the accused, who was a member of her extended family. The case came to the attention of a senior police officer when Rukaiya shared her ordeal at a cafe for acid attack survivors. She had not filed an FIR at the time and therefore could not access government schemes for survivors. The arrest was made as part of a campaign to motivate women to speak out against injustice. Acid attacks were not specifically addressed in the Indian Penal Code until 2013, when special provisions were introduced for survivors.104790178
