Kolar: Dalit man dies by suicide after assualt by ‘upper caste’ men for overtaking bike; 2 arrested
A 22-year-old Dalit man in Kolar died by suicide after he was allegedly assaulted by men belonging to an upper caste in an incident of road rage. The victim was identified as Uday Kiran, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste (SC). The Kolar police on Saturday arrested two people – Shivaraj and Munivenkatappa – in connection with the case, TV9 Kannada reported. Two others remained at large. All four accused belong to the Vokkaliga community.
Police officials said that the incident took place on November 30 in Mulabagilu taluk’s Bevanahalli village. Kiran’s uncle Hanumappa in his complaint said that the victim, who was travelling to Bairukuru along with another person, overtook Raju, a motorist who belonged to an upper caste. This resulted in a quarrel between Kiran and Raju and the latter assaulted the former. When Kiran was returning to Bevanahalli, he was waylaid by three others – Shivaraj, Gopalakrishnappa and Muniveknatappa – who snatched his phone. The three allegedly told the victim to bring his relatives and take the phone back.
When Kiran went to collect the phone alone to Pethandahalli, he was allegedly tied to a tree and thrashed by the four accused. Hanumappa rescued Kiran from Pethandahalli. However, Kiran’s family claimed that he died by suicide unable to bear the humiliation of the incident. Based on the complaint, the Nangali police booked the four under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and other relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A search is underway for the two other accused.
