India’s First OPD For Transgenders Inaugurated At Dr RML Hospital In Delhi
The newly inaugurated OPD will offer sex-change surgery facility to the transgender community apart from other healthcare facilities.

India’s first dedicated OPD for transgenders was on Sunday inaugurated at Delhi’s Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The inauguration of the dedicated OPD to the transgenders was a step to mark the start of ‘Sewa Pakhwada’. The inaugural ceremony was led by the Director of the RML Hospital, Dr Ajay Shukla, and other doctors, hospital staffs and people from the transgender community.
As per hospital administration, the newly inaugurated OPD will offer sex-change surgery facility to the transgender community. Apart from it, free treatment and investigations along with other facilities will also be provided. It is being said that the government has taken this step to ensure that the difficulties faced by the said community to access healthcare facilities are sorted.
Transgender community appreciated the move
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare later issued a statement briefing about the facility being inaugurated at the hospital. As per the statement, “The initiative is started with understanding of the difficulties encountered by transgender community to access healthcare services, largely due to discomfort and the fear of discrimination and social apathy.”
Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya later took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his pleasure on the inauguration of the speciality OPD for the community. In his post, he wrote, “Making Healthcare Services More Accessible, Equal and Inclusive. India’s first “Speciality OPD for Transgender community” started in Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Delhi.”
The initiative was largely appreciated by the transgender community, as they thanked the government for thinking and caring about them.
The ministry also shared details about the facilities being provided at India’s first dedicated OPD for transgenders.
Free Treatment, investigations and sex change surgery.
Speciality OPD clinic for transgenders will be every Friday 2 to 4 pm.
Separate OPD registration counter for these clinics to facilitate a smooth process.
Endocrinology facility with Clinico-psychological assessment.
Plastic surgery facility for various related surgeries.
Dermatology facility for related issues.
Medicine (Physician) facility for various diseases.
Urology facility for various related problems.
Pediatrics facility for related issues.
All other related blood investigations.
Separate washroom facility for the gender neutrals or Transgenders.
