ROORKEE: CB-CID will take over the investigation into the death of Pankaj, a Dalit youth, in Roorkee’s Belda village, where clashes over the issue between different caste groups have led to several arrests. The vice-chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Arun Haldar, visited Belda on Wednesday and said the death will now be treated as murder and the FIR will be registered under section 302 (murder) of IPC.
Police had insisted that the death wasn’t murder and registered Pankaj’s killing in section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC.
Pulling up local police, Haldar said cops should have handled the matter “more sensitively”.
Haldar, who met senior officials of district police and administration in Roorkee, said, “Had police handled the situation in a professional manner, the riots wouldn’t have occurred in the village. No one will be spared if found guilty.”
30-year-old Pankaj, who was returning to his village on a bike, was later found dead by a road, with several injuries on his body.
