Govt-run Sassoon Hospital opens dedicated transgender ward
The 28-bed transgender ward is operational and will include counselling services as well as intensive care management.
After the first transgender ward was set up at G T Hospital in Mumbai to focus on the health of the transgender community, a similar effort has been made by Pune’s government-run Sassoon General Hospital.
A dedicated transgender ward was inaugurated by State medical education minister Hasan Mushrif at an event held on Wednesday at the Sassoon General Hospital. Joint director (medical) Medical Education and Research Dr Ajay Chandanwale was also present for the inauguration.
Dr Aarti Kinikar, acting Dean of B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, said activists working towards the welfare of this community have always been concerned that patients of the community are not treated on time. “Not only will they be provided medical treatment but as many as five to six departments like medicine and surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology , dermatology and psychiatry, will be involved in the overall well being of the transgender community,” Kinikar said.
The 28-bed transgender ward is operational and will include counselling services as well as intensive care management. Mushrif also visited various facilities at the hospital campus, including the casualty, neonatal intensive care unit and a separate bariatric surgery ward that has been newly set up to conduct operations free of cost.
