BAP clinches three; BSP candidate beats Malinga who assaulted Dalit engr
JAIPUR: Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP), a new political party, which was carved out of Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) ahead of the assembly polls in Rajasthan, opened its account by winning three seats. On the other hand, even though Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was reduced from six seats in 2018 to two seats this year, its Bari candidate Jaswant Singh Gurjar defeated Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Giriraj Singh Malinga, who was accused of assaulting a Dalit engineer in Dholpur in March last year.
Malinga joined BJP as Congress didn’t announce him as its candidate from the Bari seat. A chargesheet was filed against Malinga in the case after he switched his party. BSP’s Manoj Kumar won the other seat by beating Congress’ Krishna Poonia by a margin of 2,574 votes.
BAP’s Rajkumar Roat won Chaurasi seat by a margin of 69,166 votes defeating BJP’s Sushil Katara.
Umesh Meena got the better of BJP’s Gopichand by a margin of votes 28,940 in Aspur assembly seat, and Thavar Chand trounced BJP’s Kanhaiya Lal by a margin of 6,691 votes in Dhariawad assembly constituency. However, BTP couldn’t open its account this time.
Hanuman Beniwal-led Rashtriya Loktantrik Party reduced its tally from three seats to one in the state. RLP chief Hanuman Beniwal won by a narrow margin of 2,059 votes against BJP’s Rewant Ram Danga in Khinvsar as the fight went down to the wire. Beniwal scraped through in the 19th and the final round even as Danga was leading in the 18th round.
However, RLP’s sitting MLAs Pukhraj and Indira Devi lost their seats from Bhopalgarh and Merta assembly seats respectively. Communist Party of India (Marxist), on the other hand, couldn’t open its account this time. CPI(M)’s sitting MLAs Balwan Poonia and Girdhari Lal lost their seats from Bhadra and Dungargarh assembly constituencies respectively.
