On 20 March 2018, the Supreme Court gave a decision. In this decision, several amendments were made in the SC-ST Act. The top court had said in its decision that the arrest of a public servant under the SC-ST Act cannot be done without the approval of the appointing authority.
Along with this, common people can also be arrested only after the approval of the police captain i.e. SSP. Whereas earlier there was a rule of arrest immediately after the complaint. Dalits have understood that the SC-ST Act meant for their protection is being weakened.
What was it then, after this change, various organizations of Dalit society called for Bharat Bandh on 2 April 2018. During this, lakhs of people came on the road. There were big demonstrations especially in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. During this, 13 people died in a clash with the police, whom the Dalit community called martyrs.
