Addl quota for trans people difficult: State AG tells HC
MUMBAI: Considering the extent of vertical and horizontal reservations which are already provided, providing additional reservations for transgender persons appears difficult, said state Advocate General Birendra Saraf on Tuesday before the Bombay high court.
The HC was hearing a petition filed by a trans person seeking reservations in a PSU. The state said there were “issues” regarding the interpretation of the judgments of the SC as regards reservations for transgender persons. After the state suggested that the trans persons could submit a representation before an expert panel it had earlier appointed, the HC bench said, let a government-appointed expert committee consider the aspect of such reservations.
Advocate Kranti LC appearing for the petitioner pointed to reservations provided in Karnataka and said Maharashtra, too, must adopt such a policy. The HC posted the matter for June 27.
