New Delhi: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, recently praised the Karnataka government. He said that Karnataka has helped iPhone manufacturer Foxconn recruit approximately 30,000 new employees in just nine months. This is the fastest factory expansion in India to date. Significantly, almost 80 percent of these employees are women. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav reacted to Rahul Gandhi’s comment. He commented on the Congress leader’s post in a humorous way, saying that the credit for this achievement goes to the central government’s policies and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
What did Rahul Gandhi say?
Earlier this week, Rahul Gandhi shared a news report on Facebook and wrote that recruiting 30,000 employees in just eight to nine months is the fastest factory expansion in India to date. He further said that this is not just about numbers, but about providing employment opportunities that bring about a significant change in people’s lives. This achievement is even more special because about 80 percent of the employees in this unit are women, most of whom are between 19 and 24 years old.
Rahul Gandhi further said that for many women, this is their first job. Karnataka is creating an environment where manufacturing can grow on such a large scale and at such a rapid pace. He continued, “This is the kind of India we need to build: dignified jobs and opportunities for all.”
Ashwini Vaishnav reacts to the Congress leader’s post
On this, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav responded on X (formerly Twitter) by sharing Rahul Gandhi’s post. He thanked Rahul Gandhi, saying it was an acknowledgment of the success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ program. He wrote in the post, “Thank you, Rahul Gandhi, for acknowledging the success of PM Modi’s ‘Make in India’ program. As you have noted, we are becoming a producer economy by implementing our Prime Minister’s vision.”
The issue of jobs at Foxconn company
Taiwan-based Foxconn is a major contract manufacturer for Apple devices, including the new iPhone 17. This company is expected to play a key role in shifting the production of Apple products from China to India. When the factory near Devanahalli in Bengaluru is fully operational, it is estimated that 20 million iPhones will be manufactured there annually. In the last year, iPhones worth $22 billion have been assembled in India, and the country now contributes approximately 20 percent to Apple’s total global iPhone production.
