Sophie Cunningham delivers blunt Enes Kanter Freedom response after controversial WNBA transgender sports campaign

Sophie Cunningham has made it clear that Enes Kanter Freedom’s push to enter the WNBA is not something she wants to get involved in. Speaking to ESPN, the Indiana Fever guard addressed Kanter Freedom and Royce White declaring for the WNBA Draft and chose to keep her response focused on her own team. Her comments come after Kanter Freedom repeatedly referred to Cunningham while speaking about his campaign against the league’s transgender eligibility rules. For Cunningham, the timing is important. Indiana is heading into the final four games of the regular season, with the team still fighting for a strong playoff position. Rather than spend her energy on the debate surrounding Kanter Freedom, she said her attention is on the Fever and what happens on the court. “I’m gonna let them do them,” Cunningham said. “I’m just focused on the Fever and on our sport. I think we have four more games left. I’m trying to just really dial in and keep the main thing the main thing.” Sophie Cunningham responds as Enes Kanter Freedom pushes WNBA campaign Kanter Freedom has made Cunningham part of the conversation because their views on transgender participation in women’s sports overlap. Cunningham has previously said she supports restricting transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports. At the same time, she has rejected claims that this means she hates transgender people. The former NBA player has also described Cunningham as “my friend.” His campaign drew more attention after he attended Indiana’s Aug. 23 game against the Chicago Sky wearing a shirt that defined a woman as an “adult human female.” He was later ejected after an exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. Kanter Freedom subsequently said Cunningham texted him, “What happened?” after the incident. Cunningham has not publicly confirmed that account, and her latest comments do not suggest that she has joined his campaign. Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham puts basketball first Cunningham’s position on the wider issue has not changed, but she is separating that position from Kanter Freedom’s actions. She previously told ESPN, “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth.” Now, her priority is the Fever. Cunningham is averaging 8.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists this season as Indiana heads toward the playoffs. With only four regular-season games remaining, Cunningham says she does not want outside controversy taking attention away from the team’s postseason push. Her latest comments therefore draw a clear boundary: she can have her own views on transgender participation in sports without becoming part of Kanter Freedom’s WNBA campaign. Telangana high court directs police board to accept transgender applications

Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Tuesday directed the Telangana State-Level Police Recruitment Board (TSLPRB) to accept applications from transpersons for the posts of police constables and sub-inspectors during the ongoing recruitment drive, after questioning the govt over the continued use of a binary classification of gender in its recruitment portal.A division bench comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohinuddin passed the interim order while hearing a writ petition filed by a group of transpersons challenging the availability of only two options — male and female — in the gender category in the TSLPRB’s online application portal. The bench also questioned the govt as to why it had not issued guidelines or directions to various departments to move away from the binary classification of gender. Further directing the board to file its response to the petitioners’ contentions, the bench posted the matter to Sept 16 for further hearing. TSLPRB recently issued a notification for recruitment to around 5,000 posts in the police department. So far, transpersons have been appointed to the traffic wing of Hyderabad traffic police and as volunteers for HYDRAA to assist the personnel in enforcement. “Forcing applicants to choose either ‘male’ or ‘female’ in the gender category is not only illegal but also an act of forcing transpersons to submit a false declaration about their gender identity at the very threshold of the recruitment process,” the petitioners contended. The petitioners also referred to recommendations of Telangana Backward Classes Commission for providing horizontal reservation to transgender persons in the state. Last date extended Meanwhile, Rajashekar Reddy, counsel for the Police Recruitment Board, informed the court that the last date for submitting applications had been extended to Sept 16. Taking note of this, the bench directed the board to accept the petitioners’ applications if they were able to submit them through the online portal. If the portal did not permit such applications, the board was directed to receive physical applications and provide an acknowledgement. Parliament passes Transgender Persons Amendment Bill, 2026 with Rajya Sabha approving it today

Parliament has passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, with the Rajya Sabha approving it today. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha yesterday by a voice vote amid an Opposition-led walkout. The bill seeks to redefine the category of transgender, removes the provision of self-perceived gender identity and excludes several socio-cultural identities as well as transmasculine individuals from its ambit. It also further defines transgender persons within a biological framework, based on intersex variations and differences in sexual development. Replying to the discussion on the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr Virendra Kumar said the government is compassionate towards the well-being of the transgender community. He said the Bill has provisions to empower the transgenders and give them dignity. The Minister said that the NDA government has taken several initiatives to bring transgender people to the mainstream and stop discrimination against them. Starting the discussion in the Upper House, Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury said this bill dilutes the privacy of an individual provided under the Constitution. Opposing the Bill, Ms Chowdhury said self-identification cannot be taken away through bureaucratic certification. Criticizing the government, she said that the proposed bill undermines the fundamental rights and dignity of transgender persons. Calling such a move wrong and illegal, she argued that forcing transgender persons to provide their identity through official certificates is against the spirit of equality and dignity guaranteed by the constitution.  She also questioned the government’s approach for not properly consulting with the transgender community before bringing the Bill. She also referred to the Supreme Court’s landmark NALSA judgement of 2014, which recognized the right of transgender persons to self-identify their gender. Ms Chowdhury said the proposed Bill violates the principles laid down in that judgement and fails to respect an already established legal framework. DMK MP Tiruchi Shiva also opposed the Bill, saying that even if the Bill is passed in Parliament with a majority, it will be struck down by the Supreme Court. He further added that the Bill violates Articles 14, 15, 19 and 21 of the Constitution and it deprives the community of the right to freedom, dignity and self-determination. Supporting the Bill, BJP MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni said, ” This Bill ensures justice, dignity, protection from criminalisation and legal safeguards for transgender persons. She also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing this bill with certain amendments in order to ensure that the benefits reach the deserving people in a proper manner. She said there is a need for a law that brings justice to real transgender individuals and punishes fake ones. Mrs Kulkarni said the benefits should be extended to those who are transgender by birth. She said that the amendment to extend punishment will bring down the rate of crime and forced identities. TMC’s Saket Gokhale said that 31% of Transgender people in India have attempted suicide because of the discrimination that they are facing. He alleged that now the government is going to start discriminating against them as though social discrimination were not enough.  He called it unacceptable. Mr Gokhale expressed concern that gender is going to be decided by the Chief Medical Officer and a District Magistrate, and the bill does not prescribe any qualifications for the Chief Medical Officer. Sanjay Singh of AAP said the Bill is a big let-down for the transgender community. He accused the government of not doing anything for the community. RJD’s Manoj Kr Jha said that prejudices against transgender people should stop, and they should be able to live with dignity. He added that self-determination of gender should not be taken away.  CPI(M)’s John Brittas said it is a black-letter day and the Bill is taking India a century back. He pleaded with the government to either withdraw the Bill or refer it to a Select Committee. Jaya Bachchan of the Samajwadi Party also questioned the government over the legislation. She sought to know what the urgency was in bringing the Bill, without examining it with the depth and care that it deserved. Not all colours of the rainbow: How this new short film dives into the life of the LGBTQIA+ community, and more

What happens when you can be a transperson with your lover, but scared of coming out as Dalit? The short film Tara is looking for that answer, and an OTT home Often, the intersections that make a person, doesn’t fit into our version of reality. Tara, a 20-minute fictional film, beautifully puts across the conundrum of which part of ourselves is palatable to our nearest and dearest, even a lover. The protagonist of the movie, Tara, is a transwoman who falls in love with a heterosexual man. Tara is tapped into her female sensuality, and so when she meets Aman, the frontman of the band that is playing at a party, their chemistry is palpable. Writer-director Ashutosh S Shankar, who is a psychology graduate and spends his time between Mumbai and Pune, is a queer Dalit and explains that the story came out from the conversations of between his trans friend in Pune and him.  “She and I kept talking about how we are forced to manoeuvre our way around our identities,” he says. The 26-year-old was more inclined to movies since his childhood. “I tried my hand at filmmaking. I did a couple of internships, I even worked at a production houses and took up director’s assistant gigs for a couple of years. At the same time, I was writing a bunch of scripts, getting a certain worldview of the politics, coming from the community. But I was also trying to make sense of these identities. I kept asking myself ‘How do I make sense of this?’” he adds. One of the things that really stood out to us was that when Tara takes Aman back to her place she asks him to wait outside the door for two minutes. When she finally opens the door to let him in there is a wall that seems to be missing a frame, only the rectangle imprint remains. Most might miss it, but for those who know, know. That comes from a personal experience of Shankar’s, he tells us. “Whenever my father’s colleagues would come home, we would hide Babasaheb’s portrait and it was after many years when we as a family decided that we are no longer going to do this anymore,” he explains. The expression on Tara is one of guilt and helplessness as she puts back the frame on the wall after Aman leaves. As we see Tara fall in love, we also see her fear developing — the fear of being found out — a fear that many from the Dalit community suffer from while navigating the world. “Right now am I in a position that I can say who I am, but many of us can’t because there are real life consequences that have to do with you earning a living if you come and say you are a Dalit,” he says. The movie is also produced by Zena Sagar, who herself is a transwoman, and has been one of the agitators leading the Against Trans Bill Campaign against the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026 which came to effect in March. “When we began making the movie a year ago, the Transgender Act was not there and now the release of the film is even more vital. People like Zena and hundreds of trans persons have been at the receiving end of transphobia and have been completely stripped of their autonomy,” he says. Currently, the film has been featured at film festivals, and the producers and Shankar are trying to find a limited release or even an OTT platform, but it has been difficult.  “A theatre release is difficult for short films because of the duration so we are trying for some kind of OTT release, but the terms are very unfair,” he says. “One OTT platform offered us only Rs 40,000 which is not even a fraction of what it took us to make the movie to make with the additional rider that we cannot show the movies at any festivals. While it works for many, I am holding out for something better,” he adds. We hope Shankar finds someone because otherwise how will you know what happened between Aman and Tara? Our lips are sealed. Enes Kanter Freedom challenges WNBA leadership after Cathy Engelbert departure amid transgender athlete fight and Chicago Sky lawsuit

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom has put himself forward as a possible replacement for WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who announced on Friday that she will step down at the end of 2026. The move comes as Kanter Freedom remains at the center of the league’s debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports. His announcement also comes one day after he filed a federal lawsuit over his removal from a Chicago Sky game last month. Enes Kanter Freedom wants to replace Cathy Engelbert as WNBA commissioner Kanter Freedom made his position clear on Friday after Engelbert’s announcement. In a post on X, he wrote, “MAKE @WNBA FEMALE AGAIN,” before explaining why he believes he should lead the league. “Commissioner Freedom Has a Nice Ring to It. While the reported retirement of #WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert is a win for women and an admission that the league’s rules must change, her retirement does not solve the systemic issues which must be addressed in order to protect women’s sports. “If the WNBA is unable to define what a woman is, then I, Enes Kanter Freedom, would be more than happy to step in as commissioner and lead this league back to greatness and restore fairness for all women. I’ll bring common sense. I’ll bring fairness. And yes, I’ll bring a dictionary.” Engelbert’s decision is not an immediate exit. According to the WNBA, she will retire at the end of the year after more than seven years as commissioner. The league said she will also help with the search for her replacement. Her time in charge has included major growth for the WNBA, but also criticism over issues including transgender athlete rules, player safety and officiating. The next commissioner will therefore take over at a time when the league is growing quickly while dealing with several difficult issues. Enes Kanter Freedom’s lawsuit follows Chicago Sky ejection Kanter Freedom’s commissioner push came just a day after he sued the Chicago Sky, the City of Chicago and the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority over his removal from Wintrust Arena on Aug. 23. The incident happened during the Sky’s game against the Indiana Fever. Kanter Freedom was wearing a shirt that read, “WOMAN noun. adult human female,” before he became involved in a heated exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. He was later escorted out and subsequently banned from attending Sky home games at Wintrust Arena. In his 15-page federal complaint, Kanter Freedom says his First Amendment rights were violated because he was removed while expressing his views. ESPN reported that the lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of Illinois. The Sky has given a different account of the incident. Team owner Michael Alter said Kanter Freedom stood up, moved toward the court and was viewed as a potential threat to player safety. Kanter Freedom, however, continues to argue that the incident was about his views on women’s sports and free speech. His latest move now places him in the middle of the WNBA’s leadership discussion as well as its ongoing transgender athlete debate.
