Groom Dragged Off Mare As Wedding Procession Sparks OBC Caste Clash

A wedding celebration in Gujarat’s Patan district turned violent after a 21-year-old groom was allegedly dragged off a mare and assaulted during his wedding procession. Unlike many past incidents involving upper caste and Dalit communities, this case involves two Other Backward Class (OBC) communities—the Patni (Devipujak) community and the Thakor community. Police have registered a case against five accused based on the complaint, while rights activists say the incident highlights how social hierarchy and caste-based discrimination can exist even within communities that fall under the same reservation category. Wedding Procession Began Peacefully According to the FIR, the groom, identified as Kaushik Patni, had earlier completed a pre-wedding procession in Patan city before returning to his native village, Hajipur, where another traditional wedding procession was organised. Family members said the procession initially passed through the Thakor locality after the groom briefly got down from the mare near a temple, following local customs. Once the procession reached the Patni locality, Kaushik mounted the mare again to continue the celebrations. Groom Allegedly Pulled Off Mare Police said the violence broke out at around 9:30 pm when Ramuji Thakor allegedly entered the procession, grabbed the groom by his suit, dragged him off the mare, and tore his clothes. The incident triggered chaos as family members and relatives rushed to intervene. Family Members Also Assaulted The FIR states that Sanjayji Thakor and Mehulji Thakor allegedly assaulted the groom’s uncle, Prakash Patni. When women from the family, including Nita Patni and the groom’s mother Kamu Patni, tried to stop the assault, they too were allegedly attacked. The complaint further alleges that Rahulji Thakor and Kaushikji Thakor joined the assault, used caste-based slurs against members of the Patni community, and objected to the wedding procession passing through the area. Threat Over Future Wedding Processions According to the complaint, the accused allegedly warned the family of serious consequences if anyone from the Patni community rode a mare during wedding processions in the future. The groom also reported losing a gold chain during the scuffle. Police Register Case Patan police have registered an FIR under relevant provisions related to assault, criminal intimidation, rioting, and the use of caste-based slurs. An investigation into the incident is underway. Experts Say Incident Reflects Social Hierarchies Beyond Traditional Divides Human rights activist Kaushik Parmar said the incident demonstrates that caste- or community-based assertions of social superiority are not limited to the traditional upper caste-Dalit divide. He said the Patan incident, involving two OBC communities, shows that informal social hierarchies continue to exist despite constitutional guarantees of equality. The episode has once again brought attention to caste-related tensions during wedding processions in Gujarat, with the latest case highlighting that such conflicts can also arise within communities belonging to the same social category. Odisha: Mob lynches Dalit man, family accuses police of assault

The police, who arrested two persons in connection with the lynching, rejected the allegation that Nayak was assaulted after the force rescued him. Bhubaneswar: A Dalit man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob, suspecting him of being involved in a theft case in Odisha’s Khurda district, police said on Tuesday, June 30. The family members of the deceased also accused the police of assaulting Tofan Nayak (32) after rescuing him from the mob attack and taking the injured man home instead of a hospital. The police, who arrested two persons in connection with the lynching, rejected the allegation that Nayak was assaulted after the force rescued him. The incident took place at Khanat village under Banpur police station area at about 4 pm on Sunday, June 28, where the villagers allegedly tied Nayak to an electric pole and physically assaulted him by several people. He was rescued by the police at about 6 pm and handed over to his family two hours later. The family took him to a hospital. Nayak died on Monday, June 29, during treatment at Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. Earlier, he was admitted to Banpur Community Health Centre (CHC). The cause of death will be ascertained after post-mortem examination, the police said. Also ReadRapido driver beaten to death over Rs 8k, family left devastated Police reject allegations, CCTV footage to be examined Meanwhile, based on a preliminary investigation, the Odisha Police headquarters rejected the allegation of custodial violence by Banapur Police. “The allegation is not supported by the available materials at this stage. The Zimmanama (handing over) executed by the parents, their statement before the CHC Banapur doctor, photographs of Tofan with family members at the time of release, and available CCTV footage of the police station are being examined,” the police said in a statement. Banapaur Police Station inspector in-charge Jayprakash Parida said, “One can verify the CCTV footage of Nayak being brought to the police station. He was made to sit outside the police station and never taken to the lock-up. There was no assault on him in police custody. He was healthy when being handed over to the family, though intoxicated.” Two accused arrested The police have meanwhile arrested Pabitra Rout (51) and Sarat Kumar Swain (60), both residents of Khanat village under Banapur police station. Khurda Superintendent of Police Parmar Smit Parshottamdas said a detailed investigation into the incident is underway, and further action will be taken after the postmortem report is received. The police have registered a case of murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Scheduled Caste Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act based on the complaint lodged by Nayak’s wife, Sasmita. She alleged that her husband was beaten up by people at Khanta village as well as by the personnel at the police station. Bhikari Nayak, the father of the deceased, held the police responsible for the death of his son. “The police rescued him from the village where my son was being beaten up. It was the duty of the police to refer him to a hospital instead of forcing us to take my injured son home,” he said. Nayak’s mother Sachala demanded a high-level inquiry and strict action against both police personnel and villagers involved in the assault. The incident came in less than two weeks after a mob attack on two NGO workers, including a woman in Rayagada district. This is also the second mob lynching incident in Khurda district where a GRP constable was beaten to death at Balianta on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on May 7. Inter-caste lovers found hanging

Trichy: A 19-year-old dalit youth and a 17-year-old girl belonging to MBC (most backward class) were found dead in an alleged suicide near Tharangambadi in Mayiladuthurai district on Tuesday. The youth’s relatives claimed it was a ‘caste-related killing,’ and resorted to vandalism. Police have arrested five people, including the girl’s father, under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The bodies of the youth, identified as M Parthiban from Puthupalayam village, and the minor girl, a resident of Sathangudi, were recovered from a shed a few hundred metres from the girl’s house. Parthiban was a mason, while the girl had recently completed her Class XII and was preparing to join college. They were in a relationship for two years, but the girl’s family strongly opposed it. On Monday night, Parthiban filed a complaint at Poraiyar station, alleging that the girl’s father and her relatives had assaulted him and abused him with caste slurs. In the morning, the girl’s father, Lakshmikanthan, lodged a complaint stating that his daughter was missing. Later, the couple were found hanging inside a shed. Police sent the bodies to Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Parthiban’s relatives alleged that the girl’s family members had murdered him. Dozens of them gathered in Sathangudi and vandalised the girl’s house as well as the house of another relative. Acting on the instructions of Mayiladuthurai superintendent of police in-charge G Stalin, Poraiyar police arrested the girl’s father Lakshmikanthan and four of his relatives — Surya, Manimaran, Vasanthan, and Vijaya Kumar. The suspects were charged under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and presented before a magistrate who remanded them to judicial custody. VCK members joined Parthiban’s relatives in claiming that the couple had been murdered in a ‘caste killing’. “There were no external injuries on the victims’ bodies to confirm that they were murdered,” the SP in charge told TOI. Mayiladuthurai police have deployed personnel in Sathangudi in the aftermath of the deaths. In the evening, around hundred people including VCK, communist parties, Parthiban’s relatives and villagers from Puthupalayam were detained after they blocked the road near Tharangambadi seeking justice. The SP said they are monitoring the situation and increasing the police strength at night to prevent further violence. Trump faces setback on birthright citizenship order, hails US Supreme Court ruling on transgender athletes as ‘Big win’

The US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship but upheld state laws barring transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls’ sports. “BIG WIN”: Trump after US SC upholds state laws barring transgender athletes from women’s sports(Photo Credit: x.com/WhiteHouse) US President Donald Trump received both a setback and a victory as the Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down President Trump’s executive order and upheld birth right citizenship for all children born in the United States. Moreover, Trump also hailed the US Supreme Court’s decision upholding state laws that bar transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls’ sports. Terming it a Big win, Trump wrote, “BIG WIN: The United States Supreme Court just RULED AGAINST MEN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.” “Wow! That takes that ridiculous situation off the table!!!” He made this announcement on the Truth Social platform. What did the Supreme Court rule on transgender athletes in women’s sports? Trump’s statement came after the US Supreme Court decision to uphold laws in Idaho and West Virginia that restrict transgender athletes from participating in women’s and girls’ sports. The court held that Title IX, the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education, permits schools to maintain separate sports teams based on biological sex. Read more: ‘Very possible that they will never…’: Trump breaks silence after US strikes Iran following attack on Panama-flagged tanker As per the Politico, the court’s conservative majority also denied claims that the laws infringe upon the constitutional rights of transgender individuals. This was a landmark decision in relation to the legal challenge pertaining to transgender athletes competing in schools. How did Donald Trump react to the Supreme Court’s two major rulings? Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing for the majority, stated, “The Constitution and Title IX do not require an overhaul of women’s and girls’ sports throughout America.”The ruling came in challenges to laws enacted by Idaho and West Virginia, both of which argued that the measures are intended to protect athletes assigned female at birth from physical disadvantages arising from biological differences between males and females. The states also maintained that Title IX applies based on biological sex and that the laws do not discriminate against transgender women and girls, Politico reported. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, writing for the court’s liberal wing, argued that the court should have required states to justify the restrictions for specific sports and categories of transgender athletes rather than upholding broad bans.”To the majority, the fit here is simply good enough,” Sotomayor wrote, accusing the court of relying on “overbroad generalisations” instead of allowing lower courts to undertake a more detailed review, according to Politico. Conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote in the ruling, “Consistent with Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause, we hold that the states may maintain women’s and girls’ sports for biological females. They may determine eligibility for women’s and girls’ sports based on biological sex. The Constitution and Title IX do not require an overhaul of women’s and girls’ sports throughout America.” Written by: Sumaila Zaman Edited by: Sumaila Zaman Courtesy : India.com Note: This news is originally published on https:/india.com/bha and is used purely for non-profit/non-commercial purposes, especially human rights
‘Pro Sangh approach’: Row over Kerala election commissioner’s appointment deepens rift in Congress

KPCC general secretary P M Niyas seeks Rahul Gandhi’s intervention, also writes to Mallikarjun Kharge. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The row over the appointment of the new State Election Commissioner has taken a political and ideological turn, with the opposition LDF intensifying its attack on the V D Satheesan government over its alleged soft stance towards the Sangh Parivar. The LDF, which has been targeting the government over its support to the PM SHRI scheme, has now sought to link the appointment controversy to its broader charge that the government is accommodating the Sangh Parivar. The opposition has drawn strength from the public opposition of KPCC general secretary P M Niyas to the appointment of N Seshadrinathan as the State Election Commissioner. CPM state secretary M V Govindan alleged that the appointment is yet another example of the government’s pro-Sangh Parivar approach. LDF leaders believe that criticism from within the Congress lends greater credibility to their campaign, particularly among the Muslim minority. Meanwhile, further deepening the unease within the Congress over the appointment, Niyas has sought the intervention of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, urging him to ensure that the cabinet decision to appoint Seshadrinathan is withdrawn. He has also written to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge seeking the party leadership’s intervention. On Tuesday, Niyas, who had publicly opposed the appointment of Seshadrinathan as the State Election Commissioner, met Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala. “Chennithala told me that the proposal was placed before the cabinet as an out-of-agenda item and that he, therefore, could not verify the facts,” Niyas told TNIE. Niyas reiterated that the cabinet decision should be withdrawn and said he would continue his campaign against the appointment. Apart from Minister K M Shaji, no other minister has publicly defended the chief minister over the issue. Although Niyas is widely regarded as being close to AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, no other leaders associated with Venugopal have publicly backed his stand. Party sources said both the Venugopal and Chennithala camps have adopted a strategic approach by refraining from openly criticising either the government or the chief minister. Meanwhile, leaders close to Satheesan maintained that decisions are taken collectively in consultation with the cabinet and the UDF leadership. “Ordinary party workers and the public have high expectations of the government,” a KPCC office-bearer close to Satheesan said. “The government needs time to rectify its mistakes. People will not take lightly an all-out attack against Satheesan at this stage. This is a cooling off period for the government. Niyas has his own agenda,” he added. According to Congress leaders from Kozhikode, Satheesan had reprimanded Niyas during the Chelakkara by-election campaign which in turn created a rift between them. Meanwhile, Kozhikode DCC general secretary Shajir Arfat Karat, in a Facebook post, appealed that no one should, for narrow political interests, drag people of integrity and public standing, including members of the judiciary, into the Sangh Parivar camp. However, many senior KPCC office-bearers and MLAs from Kozhikode, cutting across factional lines, are understood to support Niyas’ allegations. They claimed that similar discrepancies were evident in the appointment of the chief secretary, alleging that the appointment was made despite complaints against the officer. Some leaders also alleged that corporate interests were influencing key appointments. They further claimed that the chief minister’s preferred choice for the post of ADGP (Law and Order) was not P Vijayan. “However, the home minister did not agree with the chief minister’s proposal,” a Congress leader said. Karnataka Cabinet expansion: Brass to decide on their own

Surjewala knows the ground reality and is aware of whose elevation as ministers will help the Congress in the 2028 Assembly elections in Karnataka, sources said. BENGALURU: The Congress high command, which reportedly asked Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar not to entertain lobbying by party legislators for ministerial posts, is likely to take a decision on cabinet expansion on its own without holding any consultations with state party leaders. “AICC General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge of party affairs Randeep Singh Surjewala has prepared the list after taking suggestions from party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Shivakumar, and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Now, it is only a formality to announce the names after obtaining the approval of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi,” sources told The New Indian Express. Rahul is expected to return to India on July 3 or 4. Surjewala knows the ground reality and is aware of whose elevation as ministers will help the Congress in the 2028 Assembly elections in Karnataka, sources said. “That is why the top brass is unlikely to summon any leader to Delhi to discuss the cabinet expansion,” the sources added. However, Shivakumar, who shares a good rapport with Surjewala, is likely to have an edge in pushing for young and new faces, as Rahul Gandhi is also believed to share the same view. “There are 20 vacancies. At least 15 will be filled by new faces while maintaining a balance in terms of caste and regional representation,” party insiders said. More than 50 ministerial aspirants, who had been openly sponsoring demonstrations by their supporters and lobbying for cabinet berths, have now stopped doing so. However, some of them have continued their efforts by meeting senior leaders of the party high command confidentially in Delhi, an MLA told The New Indian Express. If all goes as planned, the expansion of the Shivakumar cabinet is expected to take place by July 10, ahead of the monsoon session of the legislature, which is likely to begin in the third week of July. We will hit back: New TNCC chief Tagore sets sight on PM Rahul Gandhi for 2029

Chennai: Taking charge as the state president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore on Monday declared that the party’s singular focus is to install Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Addressing cadres at Sathyamoorthy Bhavan, Tagore issued a stern warning to political rivals, cautioning that Congress would aggressively “hit back” against any criticism directed at the party or its leadership. “We have no personal issues with anyone. We are peace-loving people. But we will not remain silent if anyone criticises our leader. Whoever it may be,” he said. He referred to former ally DMK and its leaders Udhayanidhi Stalin, R S Bharathi, and several others, labeling them “betrayers” and “backstabbers” for criticising Rahul Gandhi following the realignment of post-poll allies. He also cautioned PMK leader Anbumani and NTK chief coordinator Seeman to refrain from criticising the Congress leader. Listing his priorities, the three-time MP urged functionaries to set aside their differences and egos to work as a unified force to achieve their target of winning all 39 seats in the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. “We should build a narrative around whether the electorate wants Rahul Gandhi or Narendra Modi as their PM. Surveys show that 60-65% of people want our leader Rahul Gandhi as the PM. We should work hard to translate the people’s wish into action.” He called TVK a “respectful ally” and credited them with aiding the revival of Congress in Tamil Nadu, as after 59 years, the party has representation in the cabinet. Noting that this is a crucial juncture, Tagore emphasised that party functionaries must work in tandem to take the party to the next level. He confirmed they would continue their alliance in the local body polls and guaranteed that hardworking and loyal functionaries would be given opportunities. He also appreciated his predecessors, comparing the role of the state president to a relay race, and assured to do his part. He appealed to ministers Rajeshkumar and P Viswanathan to meet party cadres and functionaries at Satyamoorthy Bhavan once a week after office hours. He also cautioned them to watch their words and actions, as they could attract criticism. Tagore’s predecessor K Selvaperunthagai earlier said that he had retrieved party property worth around ₹5,000 crore and established village-level committees in more than 17,000 villages during his tenure, which lasted 34 months. “I have created a robust infrastructure and retrieved party property. The new president can deliver with the existing party infra without doing much,” Selvaperunthagai said. He added that he was stepping down from the position with “double happiness” and thanked the party leadership for giving him the opportunity to serve Congress. An 11-year-old innocent girl was gang-raped in Hardoi.

The victim’s father leveled serious allegations against the police; he pleaded with the Chief Minister for justice. Hardoi Gangrape Crime News: A case of gang rape of an 11-year-old Dalit girl has come to light in Hardoi. Following this inhumane incident, the victim’s father has leveled serious allegations against the local police, causing a stir within the department. A sensational incident has come to light in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, that has brought shame to law and order and the police force. An 11-year-old Dalit girl has been accused of gang rape in the Bilgram police station area. Following this inhumane incident, the victim’s father has leveled serious allegations against the local police, causing a stir within the department. The victim’s father has leveled serious allegations against the police. The victim’s father alleges that his daughter was kidnapped and brutally assaulted. When they went to the police station seeking justice, the police, instead of taking action against the accused, threatened to imprison the victim’s family by charging them with marijuana. Furthermore, the family alleges that the police and female police officers severely beat and intimidated the victim. What is the whole matter? In fact, the victim’s family originally hails from the Harpalpur area of Hardoi district and has been living in Kanpur for the past 10 years, driving auto-rickshaws. It is alleged that the main accused, Rahul Tiwari, Prashant, his wife Priya, and Guddu, who lived below their apartment, had also kidnapped the girl on June 14th. At that time, after a complaint to Dial 112, the accused released the girl with the help of the police. It is alleged that the frightened family left the girl at her maternal grandfather’s house for her safety, but the accused were so emboldened that they lured her away from there and abducted her on June 22nd. Police Kept Procrastinating – Victim’s Father The victim’s father alleges that despite being informed on June 22nd, the Bilgram police station continued to procrastinate and filed a case the following day, June 23rd. The victim’s father claims that the investigating officer in the case, Deep Narayan Pandey, was in constant contact with the accused and was speaking to them on the phone, while telling the victim’s family that their location was untraceable. What did the victim say after regaining consciousness? The father alleges that he was chased away from the police station, was not allowed to meet his daughter, and that sections like the POCSO and SC/ST Act were not initially added to suppress the case. The extreme point was reached when the investigating officer threatened to imprison the victim’s family. The father alleges that when his daughter regained consciousness, she told him that the administration and police had intimidated, threatened, and beaten her severely. Investigating officer Deep Narayan Pandey also beat her. Because of this, his daughter is now extremely afraid to even go to the police. The accused is threatening the victim’s family. The victim’s father made another shocking revelation, stating that the main accused, Rahul Tiwari, is so emboldened that he continues to call and threaten him and his family even after the incident. According to him, accused Rahul Tiwari is saying on the phone, “Take 10-20 lakh rupees and sell your daughter. End the matter. If you do anything further in this matter, we’ll shoot you all.” The victim’s family sought help from Chandrashekhar Azad. The father stated that they still have the call details of the accused, who called and threatened them just 1-2 hours ago. When no hearing took place at the local level for several days, the victim’s family tried to contact Chandrashekhar Azad, the national president of the Azad Samaj Party. As soon as the police became aware of the matter’s escalation, the department immediately swung into action, and just a few hours later, the accused left the girl in a distraught state. What did the police say about the matter? However, the police claim that the girl walked to the police station on June 28th. Currently, the victim is admitted to a medical college due to excessive bleeding and severe shock, where she is unable to speak. Following the heated debate, Azad Samaj Party National President Chandrashekhar Azad appealed to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for strict action through the social media platform ‘X’. CM Yogi Chandrashekhar Azad’s Appeal In a tweet, Chandrashekhar Azad described the incident as inhumane and a serious question on the state’s law and order. He asked the Chief Minister, “When will daughters receive a sensitive police system?” Azad demanded that the victim be immediately provided with the best medical care, that the case be investigated impartially and timely, and that stringent sections of the POCSO and SC/ST Acts be added. Strict departmental and legal action be taken against the guilty policemen and female police officers who threatened the victim’s family and exhibited negligence, insensitivity, and assaulted the innocent girl at the police station. Police termed the allegations baseless. The police’s response to the matter has also been released. CO Bilgram, Ramsurat Sonkar, stated that a case was registered on June 23rd based on the plaintiff’s complaint, and police teams were searching for the victim. According to the police, the victim herself came to the police station on June 28th, after which she underwent a medical examination. The police have described the allegations of assault, indecency, or intimidation and killing of the innocent girl as completely baseless, false, and false. The police state that further legal action will be taken after the victim’s statement is recorded in court.
