Dalit activists demand probe into murders reported in last decade in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru: Dalit activists have demanded a high-level probe into all murders committed by communal elements in Dakshina Kannada district in the last 10 years. Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (Swabhimani Prof B Krishnappa Faction) district convenor Sadashiva Padubidri told reporters on Thursday that the govt should order a special investigation under the guidance of an incumbent or former high court judge to find the perpetrators of the murders, organisations behind it, motives, and thereby bring them before the law. “The chief minister, home minister, and police should ensure that the murders of innocents for a communal agenda or revenge do not recur in the district. People with vested interests sow the seeds of hatred to create rifts between religions and unrest in society for many decades. Due to their provocative speeches, innocent people from middle-class and poor families are being murdered. Similarly, those from the middle-class and poor only are spoiling their future after their involvement in murders,” he said. The mindset of revenge killing is said to have resulted in the murders of Prashanth Poojary, Deepak Rao, Sharath Madiwala, Masood B, Praveen Nettaru, Mohammed Fazil, Ashraf, Suhas Shetty, and Abdul Rahiman, said Sadashiva. “Though people suspect communal issues or revenge leading to all deaths, only the murders of Praveen Nettaru and Suhas Shetty were handed over to the NIA. Suhas, who was a rowdy-sheeter, was involved not only in the murder of Fazil, but was also an accused in the murder case of Dalit youth Kirthi. Hence, how can he be called a Hindutva leader? Is it right to ignore one section completely to appease another? All accused of communal crimes and revenge killings should be punished stringently without any caste or religion bias,” he said. Sanjeeva, father of slain Dalit youth Kirthi, Samiti leaders Saronjini Bantwal, Raghu K Ekkaru, Krishnananda D, and others were present. Channi slams Bhagwant Mann, Kejriwal as ‘anti-Dalit’

Ludhiana: Former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi claimed that both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Arvind Kejriwal were anti-Dalit and poor people. Referring to the party not appointing a Dalit deputy chief minister, as promised before the 2022 assembly elections, Channi claimed that CM Bhagwant Singh Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal did not participate in the programmes organised in the memory of Dalit gurus. Channi said that Kejriwal projected himself as a common man by wearing slippers and travelling in auto-rickshaws, but soon after coming to power, he started travelling in helicopters and staying in luxury hotels. On Wednesday, Channi said, a government programme was organised in Jalandhar on the occasion of Kabir Jayanti and both Mann and Kejriwal were supposed to attend it. However, he claimed that despite being in Jalandhar, both returned without attending the event. He added that Kejriwal and Mann spent time in a friend’s factory after inaugurating a park located about three kilometres from the Kabir Jayanti programme venue. He also said that the Kabir Bhawan was constructed during the Congress government at a cost of Rs 12 crore. Channi claimed that the AAP government did not pay attention to cleaning of the sarovar at the Bhagwan Valmiki Teerth in Amritsar, which, had been made using the machinery procured by the Congress government at expense of crores. The former CM said that the AAP government did not implement the project of building a research centre on the life of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar for Rs 100 crore at the Technical University in Kapurthala. He claimed that during his tenure as CM, he presented a cheque of Rs 25 crore to the Dera Sachkhand Ballan management to build a study centre devoted to Guru Ravidas’s teachings at Dera Ballan, the holy place of Guru Ravidas. Channi alleged that the cheque was taken back by Kejriwal. On the eve of Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann reached the dera to present the same cheque but the amount of Rs 25 crore has not been released to the dera so far, he claimed. “I genuinely want to ask CM Mann and Kejriwal what their issues are with poor and Dalit people,” Channi asked. He said that before the assembly elections, votes were collected by filling forms promising to give Rs 1,000 per month to women but after 40 months, women had not received anything. Panvel Nursing College Principal Booked For Abetment To Suicide, Caste Harassment Of Dalit Student

The deceased, Uday Motilal Aghale, a first-year B.Sc. Nursing student at a Nursing College in Poyanje, Panvel, allegedly took his own life on June 3 due to prolonged harassment by the college principal. Panvel Taluka Police have booked the principal of a nursing college hostel for abetment to suicide and caste-based harassment after a 19-year-old student was found dead in his hostel room. The deceased, Uday Motilal Aghale, a first-year B.Sc. Nursing student at a Nursing College in Poyanje, Panvel, allegedly took his own life on June 3 due to prolonged harassment by the college principal. A case has been registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and for abetment to suicide, based on a complaint filed by his mother. Aghale, a native of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), had secured admission at the college in December 2024 after scoring below the required CET cutoff. The college had approached him with the offer of admission and assured him of free hostel, mess, and uniforms due to his reserved category status. However, according to the complaint registered, none of these promises were fulfilled, and Aghale was allegedly pressured to pay Rs 5 lakh. When he questioned the demand, the lady principal reportedly began targeting him with caste-based insults and public humiliation. Aghale frequently told his parents about the mental distress he was facing and had expressed his desire to leave the institution. Despite this, his parents encouraged him to focus on his studies. On the night of June 3, Aghale made a final phone call to his mother around 1:30 a.m., asking about his family’s well-being before saying he could no longer tolerate the harassment. He ended the call and was later found hanging in his hostel room by a friend, Narsingh Giri, who was alerted by Aghale mother when she couldn’t reach him. Aghale was rushed to a hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. “As per the allegations, we have filed the case against the Principal and the further investigations are on,” said a police officer from Panvel Taluka police station. Is Caste Hatred a New Govt Policy in Maharashtra? AIISCA Blasts Govt, Demands Justice for Beed Dalit Youth

AIISCA condemned the attack and emphasized that it was not merely an act of individual violence-it was an organized message of caste terror, meant to humiliate, dehumanize, and punish a Dalit family for showing moral courage and human dignity in a village dominated by silence, fear and caste arrogance. Beed- The All India Independent Scheduled Castes Association (AIISCA) has issued a strongly-worded condemnation of the brutal mob attack on a Dalit youth, and his family in Shirapur Gat in Beed district of Maharashtra. The incident, which took place on a week ago, has been described as a premeditated act of caste terror aimed at crushing the dignity and humanity of a Dalit family. AIISCA has accused the Maharashtra government and law enforcement of deliberate inaction, pointing to the delayed police response, the hospital’s refusal to provide timely medical and legal assistance, and the failure to file a medico-legal case until external pressure was applied. What happened on June 4 The horrifying incident of caste violence took place in Shirapur Gat village when a Dalit youth Vaibhav Khandgale (32) and his family were attacked by upper caste people. This attack on Vaibhav was done only because he had helped a Dalit teenager. Vaibhav returned home from his office at around 6 pm on June 4. He saw that a Dalit teenager of the village was unwell and no one was helping him. Vaibhav immediately took him to the hospital. At 7:30 pm, when he returned home and was sitting outside, 10-12 upper caste (Maratha) people suddenly attacked him in a car. Some of Vaibhav’s old classmates were also among them. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers hurled caste-slurs, saying, “Khoop jaast paishacha maaj ahe ka tula? Maharache lokam lay majalet…” (“Are you crazy about money? These Mahar (Dalit) people have become very arrogant…”). They thrashed Vaibhav with an iron rod, looted his wallet (₹8,000) and also stole his mother’s gold jewellery from inside the house. The mob dragged them out on the street and beat them relentlessly while more than 200 villagers watched, not intervening. When Vaibhav’s parents returned, his mother tried to save him, but she too was hurled caste-slurs and sustained minor injuries. Meanwhile, the mother of the Dalit youth whom Vaibhav had taken to the hospital was also attacked. The entire Dalit community was abused and threatened with social boycott. AIISCA alleges that the police deliberately avoided invoking critical sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) while filing false counter-cases against the victims, a tactic it claims is influenced by caste bias within the administration. The victims and their families remain unprotected, while the accused roam free, shielded by caste privilege and political connections. The association has raised urgent questions about the state of democracy and constitutional values in Maharashtra, asking whether the government’s silence and inaction signify an endorsement of caste supremacy. AIISCA has demanded the immediate arrest of all accused under relevant sections of the BNS and SC/ST Act, disciplinary action against negligent police and medical officials, the quashing of fabricated counter-cases, witness protection, and a special court-monitored trial overseen by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC). It has also called for an independent probe into administrative complicity in caste-based impunity.
