FIR Names Brahmin Community After Dalit Assault Claim An FIR has been registered against almost all adult male members of the Brahmin community in Harinagar village of Darbhanga district in Bihar under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989, following allegations of assault and abuse against a Dalit family.Photo journalism course More than a dozen people have been arrested so far. What has raised serious questions is that the FIR names 70 accused persons and also mentions around 100 to 150 unidentified individuals. Together, this roughly equals the entire adult male Brahmin population of the village. Many of those named are reportedly working in other states, such as Delhi and Mumbai, to earn a living and have not lived in the village for years. The complaint was filed by Asarfi Paswan in connection with an incident that allegedly took place on January 31 in Harinagar village under the Kusheshwar Asthan police station area. The dispute is linked to pending wages owed to his son Vikram Paswan, who had worked for Hemkant Jha for nearly five years. According to the complaint, a village-level settlement meeting was held on January 30 but ended in arguments and unrest. The next morning, Vikram Paswan was allegedly attacked while returning home after buying vegetables. Asarfi Paswan alleged that Hemkant Jha and others abused his son using caste-based slurs and chased him with sticks, iron rods, axes, bricks and stones with the intent to kill him. He claimed that the attackers followed Vikram into his house, dragged him to the ground and assaulted him severely. The complaint further alleged that Phulkant Jha instigated others to kill Vikram, after which he was hit on the head with iron rods and lost consciousness. Asarfi’s other son, Rajgir Paswan and three other villagers who tried to intervene were also allegedly beaten and suffered head injuries. Asarfi Paswan also alleged that his wife, Ramtara Devi and granddaughter Komal Kumari were assaulted. He claimed that his wife was beaten and her clothes were torn, while his granddaughter suffered a fractured hip. He further stated that gold and silver ornaments, cash worth two lakh rupees kept for his granddaughter’s marriage, household items and mobile phones were looted. Four motorcycles were allegedly damaged, and a nearby roadside restaurant was vandalised. The family was also allegedly threatened with eviction from the village. Based on the complaint, FIR number 22 of 2026 was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the SC ST Act. Kusheshwar Asthan police station in charge, Ankit Choudhary, said that the dispute was originally related to money and claimed that some anti-social elements were trying to give it a caste angle. He confirmed that 12 people have been arrested so far and said further action would depend on evidence collected during the investigation. The case has drawn attention from the National Crime Investigation Bureau, a civil society organisation, which expressed surprise over the inclusion of the entire Brahmin community in the FIR. The organisation said that not a single Brahmin family in the village appeared to have been spared and pointed out that many of those named were not even residing in the village. Meanwhile, tension continues in Harinagar village. Additional police force has been deployed and authorities say they are recording statements from both sides and examining videos and other evidence. Police officials have stated that no innocent person will be harassed and that further arrests will be made strictly on the basis of evidence. Gujarat: ‘Punishment’ for riding a horse – Dalit groom attacked with swords, wedding celebrations turn into terror

The cruel face of casteist mentality in Chandrumana village of Patan; hooliganism over ‘riding a horse’ continues despite the SC/ST Act. Patan: On one hand, where India is presenting itself to the world as a technological superpower and a progressive nation, on the other hand, a village in the Patan district of Gujarat has reminded us of the bitter reality of how deeply rooted casteism still is in the interior parts of the country. Monday should have been the happiest day of Vishal Chavda’s life, but the regressive thinking of society turned it into a nightmare. As Vishal, who belongs to the Dalit community, mounted a horse to take his wedding procession (varghoda) through the streets of Chandrumana village, the sounds of wedding music were drowned out by the clanging of naked swords. The ‘crime’ of equality According to local eyewitnesses, as the procession moved forward, a group of people from the dominant community blocked their path. These people were allegedly enraged that a groom from a “lower caste” dared to perform a tradition that they considered their privilege—that is, riding a horse. The attackers shouted, “How dare a Dalit ride a horse in this village?” The situation quickly turned violent. This mob, armed with swords, allegedly unleashed a wave of hooliganism. They not only threatened the groom but also assaulted the people in the wedding procession. For them, a Dalit riding a horse was not a celebration of marriage, but a challenge to the centuries-old social order. An atmosphere of terror despite the law This incident is not an isolated case, but part of a shameful story that is repeatedly played out in Gujarat. From Gandhinagar to Banaskantha, the simple custom of a Dalit groom riding a horse during his wedding procession often leads to violence. Despite stringent laws like the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the “ban on riding a horse” is still used by upper castes as a violent tool of social control to keep the marginalized sections “in their place.” However, the local administration has acted promptly, registering an FIR and deploying police forces to maintain law and order. But the wounds inflicted on Vishal and his family will take a long time to heal. Similar attacks have happened before Statistics show that this hatred is not new. In February 2024, in Chadasana village of Gandhinagar, another Dalit groom, Vikas Chavda, was pulled down from his horse and slapped by four people. Earlier, in 2020, a wedding procession of an army soldier, who was serving the country, was also pelted with stones simply because he was riding a horse. These incidents raise the question of whether we are truly moving towards a modern society. Rajan Chaudhary Courtesy: Hindi News

A tragic end to a love marriage in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu. A Dalit woman’s death comes amid allegations of dowry and caste-based harassment. Villupuram (Tamil Nadu): A shocking incident has emerged from Sornavur village in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district, where a 22-year-old Dalit Christian woman has died under suspicious circumstances. The deceased’s family has accused her husband and in-laws of harassing her for dowry and using caste-related abuses. What is the whole matter? The deceased has been identified as A. Devjessy Priya (22), who had a love marriage with her college friend, M. Vasanth Kumar (24), about three months ago. Vasanth Kumar belongs to the Hindu Vanniyar community. After marriage, the couple lived in Sornavur village near Valavanur in Villupuram district. Priya’s family says the marriage took place in the presence of the groom’s family, but Priya’s relatives were not even informed of it. According to a complaint filed by Priya’s elder brother, A. Richard (26), Priya was subjected to constant mental and physical abuse since the wedding. According to the allegations, in addition to her husband Vasantha Kumar, her parents, Murugan and Lakshmi, and her elder brother, Bhaktavachalam, were also involved in this abuse. The last phone call The incident occurred on January 31st, when Priya called her aunt. She told her that she was being beaten and harassed for dowry. Ironically, just an hour after this call, her husband informed the family that Priya had died. Richard has claimed that his sister did not commit suicide, but was murdered, and that an attempt is being made to pass it off as a suicide. He stated that injuries were found on Priya’s body, indicating assault. Speaking to the media, Richard said, “We want the police to investigate this case with the sensitivity of caste discrimination and dowry harassment in mind. My sister was brutally tortured and then killed.” Priya’s life has been full of struggles. Priya originally hailed from Alagappa Samudram in Panruti taluk, Cuddalore district. After losing her parents in her childhood, she was raised by her elder brother, grandmother Josephina Mary, and aunts in Madampattu village near Thiruvennainallur in Villupuram district. However, the deceased’s family is not fully satisfied with the police action. They have refused to accept Priya’s body and are demanding that Kumar’s parents and other relatives also be immediately arrested. BJP to invoke legacy of Dalit icons, including Kanshi Ram, before UP polls

Lucknow: The BJP has identified more than a dozen prominent Dalit icons, including BSP founder Kanshi Ram, whose legacy it plans to invoke as part of a larger plan to consolidate the SC community in the run-up to the high-stakes 2027 state assembly elections. UP BJP sources said the party has prepared a calendar marking the birth and death anniversaries of at least 15 Dalit ideologues who played a key role as social reformers by awakening the consciousness of socially deprived sections of society. Besides Kanshiram, the Dalit figures who will feature in the BJP’s future Dalit-centric campaigns include Sant Ravi Das, Sant Gadge, BR Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule, Gangu Baba, Uda Devi, Jhalkari Bai, Veera Pasi, Lakhan Pasi, Savitri Bai Phule, Tilka Manjhi, Rama Bai Ambedkar, Swami Acchutanand and Narayan Guru. Confirming the development, UP BJP SC Morcha chief Ram Chandra Kannaujia said the idea was to give due respect to every Dalit icon and to spread their ideas and teachings far and wide. He said that the BJP acknowledges Kanshiram as a powerful voice of Dalits, the underprivileged, and the exploited. “We also greeted BSP chief Mayawati on her birthday on January 15,” he said, while speaking to TOI. The development, experts said, aligns with the BJP’s concerted attempts to make deeper inroads into the Dalit vote base amid a steep decline in the political graph of the BSP.The move is also seen as the BJP’s bid to maintain continuous engagement with different Dalit sub-castes throughout the year, while preventing opposition parties from monopolising the social justice narrative. Analysts said that the measure marks the saffron outfit’s attempt to counter the opposition’s Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak (PDA) poll narrative, which is said to have dented the saffron outfit in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, pulling its tally down from 62 to 33. On Feb 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leaders celebrated the 649th birth anniversary of Sant Ravidas, emphasising his teachings of equality and social harmony. PM Modi also visited Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Punjab and renamed Adampur Airport after Sant Ravidas. At the same time, the BJP SC Morcha launched various programmes aimed at honouring the spiritual leader and reaching out to the Ravidasia community. The BJP, however, faced criticism from BSP supremo Mayawati, who charged the saffron outfit with not reverting the name of Bhadohi to Sant Ravidas Nagar. Ravidas is said to have been born in the Gobardhanpur village on the outskirts of Varanasi. The party next plans to celebrate the birth anniversary of Sant Gadge on Feb 23 on a grand scale. Gadge, born as Debuji Zhingraji Janorkar in Amravati in 1876, belonged to the Parit/Dhobi community. He conducted his discourses in the form of kirtans, in which he emphasised values such as service to humanity and compassion. By publicly acknowledging figures such as Kanshi Ram and even extending greetings to Mayawati, the BJP, sources said, attempts to soften its image among the BSP’s core Dalit voters. The BJP would subsequently celebrate the birth anniversary of Jyotiba Phule on April 11, BR Ambedkar on April 14, and Ahilyabai Holkar on May 31. Ambedkar was always part of the BJP’s social narrative, even as the BJP moved closer to the Dalit community since its astronomical rise under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi after 2014. The BJP also plans to invoke the legacy of Dalit leader Gangu Baba. Born in Bithoor, Baba was a participant in the India rebellion of 1857. He was hanged by the British in 1859. While his birth anniversary is now widely known, local Dalit groups and activists hold a tribute and honour ceremony for Gangu Baba in Chunniganj (Kanpur) on June 5 every year, which functions as his birth anniversary observance in community memory. IndiaTamil Nadu Dalit Man Alleges Honour Killing After Girlfriend’s Death, Cites Threats Over Inter-Caste Marriage

The death of a young college student in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district has triggered serious allegations of an honour killing, even as the police say early findings point towards suicide and that the final cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report.News subscription service The woman, identified as Sivamathi, was 19 years old and studying in her second year of college. She belonged to an upper-caste family and was in a relationship with Ananthakrishnan, a Dalit man who works with a mobile phone company. Sivamathi was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the Pettaipuli area of Tirunelveli. In his complaint, Ananthakrishnan alleged that Sivamathi’s family strongly opposed their inter-caste relationship and plans to marry. He said the couple had decided to get married on February 6 and had already started the process of obtaining a marriage certificate. According to him, the family’s opposition was entirely based on caste. He further alleged that Sivamathi was threatened by her maternal uncle, who warned her that she would be killed if she went ahead with the marriage. Ananthakrishnan also claimed that her family had taken away her mobile phone to cut off contact between them and that Sivamathi had earlier told him about being assaulted and repeatedly threatened at home. Police officials said that while these allegations are serious, initial inquiry and evidence from the spot suggest that Sivamathi may have died by suicide. A senior police officer said, “We will confirm everything only after the post-mortem report. All angles are being investigated.” Statements from Sivamathi’s family members, friends and her fiancé are currently being recorded. Given the sensitivity of the case and the caste-related allegations, the investigation has been transferred to an Assistant Commissioner of Police. Officers said that if evidence emerges showing that Sivamathi was driven to take her life due to threats, pressure or harassment, her family members could be booked for abetment of suicide. The case has revived painful memories of earlier caste-related violence in southern Tamil Nadu. Many have drawn parallels with the murder of Kavin Selvaganesh, a Dalit software engineer who was hacked to death in July 2025 for being in an inter-caste relationship. That case had led to widespread protests and demands for a strong law to prevent honour killings.
