Telangana CM Reddy suggests co-opting transgender persons as corporators in civic bodies

Hyderabad, Jan 12 (PTI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday suggested to his cabinet colleagues that transgender persons be co-opted as corporators in civic bodies in the upcoming municipal elections to ensure their representation. Speaking at an event where he inaugurated day care centres for senior citizens, Reddy also said the state would soon introduce a law to deduct 10-15 per cent of the salary of government employees who do not take care of their elderly parents. He noted that Telangana has already provided employment opportunities to transgender persons in the Hyderabad police commissionerate and other government departments. “My appeal to my cabinet colleagues is this: municipal elections are approaching. We can nominate co-opted corporators in the corporations. If a transgender person is nominated in every corporation as a corporator, they will have representation in legislative bodies,” he said. Citing the example of minorities being co-opted as members in Zilla Parishads and municipalities, he said transgender persons could raise their issues if given membership in civic bodies. Reddy suggested that a decision on the matter could be taken at the next cabinet meeting. He said the day care centres for senior citizens being set up under the ‘Pranam’ programme are being described as the first of their kind in the country. Observing that some senior citizens are neglected by their children, Reddy said the government would introduce legislation in the upcoming budget session to deduct 10-15 per cent of the salary of government employees who neglect their parents, with the amount credited to the parents’ bank accounts. “We can say that those who are not taking care of their parents are not fulfilling their responsibility towards society,” he added. The chief minister also said the government would announce a health policy during the budget session to provide medical treatment for all citizens in the state. Referring to the caste survey conducted by the Congress government in Telangana, he claimed that the Centre “bowed to pressure from it and announced a caste census as part of the national census.” Reddy also said former Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy is an inspiration for all persons with disabilities, having excelled as a parliamentarian and leader while living with a disability. The Telangana government had earlier appointed transgender persons as traffic assistants in Hyderabad. On the occasion, the chief minister distributed retrofitted motorised vehicles, battery-operated tricycles and other aids to persons with disabilities. Gender-inclusive Pongal celebration embraces transgender

Madurai: To reaffirm gender equality and create safe, inclusive educational spaces, the Madurai Institute of Social Sciences, in association with the Transgender Resource Centre, organized a gender-inclusive Pongal celebration on Monday. More than 450 college students participated in the event, which was seen as a step towards social equality and acceptance for members of the transgender community within academic institutions, said head of social work department M Nishanth. Priya Babu, founder of the Transgender Resource Centre, said cultural celebrations provide an important platform to break social barriers and encourage meaningful interaction between students and members of the transgender community. Two transwomen — Mastani and Shreya — studying second-year economics at Madurai Kamaraj University were invited to the stage. Mastani told TOI, “Usually we would like to celebrate with our families, but it is not possible for all of us. I really enjoyed the celebrations. We played many games like uriyadi, lemon on the spoon. We had dance and music performances. Such celebrations effectively enforce inclusion, in addition to awareness programmes in colleges.” Addressing the gathering, Priya highlighted the crucial role educational institutions play in shaping young minds and supporting individuals during periods of personal transition. “Nearly a 50% of student’s time is spent in educational institutions and the remaining 50% in households. When individuals experience gender-affirming thoughts, creating a safe and supportive space within colleges, it will ensure that they do not drop out of colleges,” she said. More than 25 trans men and trans women participated in the celebrations. “Usually we keep pongal department-wise and end our celebrations. This year it is more meaningful,” Nishanth said. Priya urged other educational institutions across the state to adopt similar initiatives and celebrate festivals in a gender-inclusive manner. Such efforts, she said, would help reduce stigma and ensure that transgender students feel valued and supported in their pursuit of education. Civic seat for transgenders & health shield for citizens: Revanth

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday proposed nominating a transgender person as a co-option member in every municipal corporation in Telangana, beginning with corporations likely to go to polls in Feb, to ensure their direct representation in civic bodies. Addressing a welfare programme at Praja Bhavan for children, senior citizens and specially challenged persons, the CM said the proposal would be placed before the cabinet shortly. Drawing parallels with the existing practice of co-opting minorities in local bodies, he said transgender persons too deserve institutional representation to raise community issues independently. Revanth also announced Rs 2 lakh financial assistance to specially challenged persons who marry within the community, adding that the benefit would be extended even if a non-disabled person marries a specially challenged individual. The CM said the state govt would unveil a comprehensive health policy in the upcoming budget session to ensure access to medical treatment for every citizen. Noting that rising healthcare costs are forcing families to sell assets, he said the Assembly would deliberate in detail on expanding state-supported medical care. Another key announcement was a proposed Bill to cut 10–15% of the salaries of govy employees who neglect their parents, with the deducted amount credited directly to the parents’ accounts after verification by revenue officials. The govt is also setting up senior citizen day-care centres, ‘Pranaam’, across the state. Revanth reiterated strict implementation of reservations for specially challenged persons in jobs and education, citing the appointment of a Paralympics medallist to a Group-II cadre post as an example of the government’s commitment to dignity and self-respect. The programme was attended by deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka and ministers Adluri Laxman and D Anasuya Seethakka. Reaffirming Telangana’s social justice agenda, Revanth said the Centre was adopting the state’s caste survey model for a nationwide caste census. Riley Gaines takes bold stand to attend Supreme Court hearings on transgender athlete participation in women’s sports

Riley Gaines has once again stepped into the national spotlight. The former collegiate swimmer announced that she plans to attend two major Supreme Court hearings that could shape the future of women’s sports in the United States. The cases focus on whether states can legally restrict transgender athletes from competing in women’s categories. Gaines said the upcoming decisions are extremely important. She believes the rulings will determine whether laws designed to protect women’s sports are constitutional. The hearings involve laws from West Virginia and Idaho. Both cases have drawn national attention and sparked strong opinions on fairness, safety, and equal opportunity in sports. Riley Gaines backs state laws and supports female athletes speaking out — riley_gaines_ (@riley_gaines_) Riley Gaines confirmed she will be present at the Supreme Court in two weeks for the hearings of West Virginia v. B.P.J. and Little v. Hecox. She explained that these cases will decide if states are allowed to protect women’s sports under the Constitution. Gaines also encouraged her supporters to make their voices heard by signing a related petition. The West Virginia case centers on a state law that prevents transgender girls from competing in female sports categories. A middle school athlete named Becky challenged the law, arguing that it violates constitutional rights and Title IX protections. Becky has reportedly been on medication since the start of puberty. Gaines believes the case will have a major impact on youth and school sports nationwide. The second case, Little v. Hecox, involves Idaho’s HB 500 law. This law banned transgender athletes from women’s sports. Lindsay, a transgender college student at Boise State University, was affected by the rule and challenged it in court. The Supreme Court agreed to review both cases. In addition to her legal advocacy, Gaines recently voiced strong support for San Jose State University volleyball player Brooke Slusser. In a Fox News interview, Slusser shared the emotional stress she faced after learning a transgender athlete, Blaire Flemming, was competing on her team. Gaines accused the school of failing to inform female athletes about the situation. Gaines said Slusser only spoke up after realizing she had been living with and sharing hotel rooms with a biological male during team trips. She added that Slusser eventually left school and returned home due to concerns for her safety and mental health. Gaines described the situation as abusive. Slusser later revealed that the experience deeply affected her health. She said the stress led to an eating disorder and caused her to temporarily lose her menstrual cycle. Gaines continues to argue that these stories highlight why women’s voices must be central in discussions about sports policies.
