G Ram G ‘anti-dalit’, restore MGNREGA: Punjab assembly passes resolution

Chandigarh: Punjab vidhan sabha on Tuesday “unanimously” passed a resolution accusing the BJP-led Centre of taking away the livelihood of dalit labourers and poor families by “scrapping” MGNREGA and replacing it with the VB-G RAM G Act. Dubbing the new Act “anti-Dalit”, and a “deliberate and dangerous conspiracy” that has effectively taken away the right to survival of Dalit labourers across the country, the House demanded that it be immediately withdrawn, and MGNREGA restored to its original rights-based form. The resolution also took sharp aim at Shiromani Akali Dal, accusing the party of maintaining “silence” on the issue. “This silence is because they hope to re-establish their alliance with the BJP in 2027, even if the dalits have to pay the price for it. Keeping silent on the verdicts against dalits is also a crime,” it said. The resolution further alleged that the Centre moved beyond merely dismantling a “govt scheme” to effectively destroying the “right to survival” for the country’s dalit labourers. According to the resolution, the BJP’s decisions repeatedly prove a desire to marginalise them and reflect a sentiment that “BJP hates Dalits”. The resolution said, “Attacking MGNREGA is actually an attack on the dignity and existence of Dalits.” Through the resolution, the House noted that the “abolition” of the programme—which previously allowed labourers to stay in their villages, educate their children, and live with dignity—is a direct attack on the “dignity and existence” of the community. According to the text, the “scrapping” of the scheme “extinguished the kitchen stoves” of families. The resolution, moved by the rural development and panchayats minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, said, “A govt that extinguishes the kitchen stoves of the dalit forfeits its moral right to seek votes from the community. This House clearly states that the policies of the BJP-led Centre are anti-Dalit.” It stated that the decision to “abolish MGNREGA” is not merely an administrative choice but a “declaration of thought from an anti-dalit perspective”. “MNREGA was the last means of survival for millions of dalits and poor dalit families in the country. It was the system that allowed dalit labourers to stay in their villages, earn their livelihood through hard work, send their children to school, and live with dignity,” the resolution said. “This House therefore recommends that the state govt demand from the BJP-led Centre govt to immediately withdraw the decision to scrap MNREGA, that MNREGA be fully restored to its original right-based form, and ensure guaranteed work and wages for Dalit labourers and poor Dalit families across the country,” it said. The resolution concluded by reaffirming that the Punjab vidhan sabha stands firmly with labourers and demands that the “abolition” of these rights be reversed to protect the “original right-based form” of the employment guarantee. ‘Extra burden on states’ Concerns were raised over the shift in financial responsibility from a fully centrally sponsored model to a 60:40 Centre-state sharing model under the new Act. It was pointed out that the change will impose an additional financial burden on states like Punjab that are already facing financial difficulties. Furthermore, if central budget limits are reached, the state must bear the entire responsibility for unemployment allowances and 100% of the costs for work provided beyond the federal allocation. A Congress MLAs alleged that there was an attempt to scrap the scheme, as the states will not be able to bear the exorbitant financial burden. The opposition party also offered support to the AAP govt to take its fight against the scheme to Delhi. Rahul Gandhi lives in a world of fantasy and acts like a bully, Shivraj Singh Chouhan lashed out at the opposition over the G RAM G protest

Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Rahul Gandhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has launched a major attack on Rahul Gandhi. He said that he lives in a world of fantasy. He also strongly criticized the opposition over the G RAM G protest. Bhopal: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan spoke to the media in Bhopal. During this, he strongly attacked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the Punjab government. Shivraj Singh Chouhan was furious over the special session of the Punjab Assembly called against G RAM G. He said that this is against the basic spirit of the Constitution and the federal structure. He said that it is surprising that the agenda of bringing a resolution against a law passed by Parliament has been included in a one-day session of the Punjab Assembly. Also lashed out at Rahul Gandhi Meanwhile, Shivraj Singh Chouhan retaliated against Rahul Gandhi, saying that Rahul Gandhi lives in a world of fantasy and has nothing to do with the reality of the country. Saying that work can be done without the Council of Ministers and the Cabinet is merely spreading confusion; saying whatever comes to mind is not responsible politics. States have a constitutional responsibility to abide by laws passed by Parliament Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that if a law is made in Parliament, then passing a resolution against it in the Assembly is against the spirit of our federal structure. Would it be appropriate for the District Panchayat, Janpad Panchayat or Gram Panchayat to start passing resolutions against state laws…? He clearly stated that abiding by the laws passed by Parliament is the constitutional responsibility of the Center and all the states. What the Punjab government and some parties in the Assembly are doing is undemocratic, undignified and against the basic spirit of the Constitution. Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that this is the politics of blind opposition. Some people are opposing merely for the sake of opposition, which has nothing to do with democracy and constitutional norms. Listed corruption cases in Punjab Meanwhile, Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched a scathing attack on the state government over the corruption cases that have surfaced in Punjab, including in MNREGA and other schemes. He said that thousands of corruption cases have come to light in Punjab, but neither action has been taken against the culprits nor has the embezzled amount been recovered. Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that out of 13,304 Gram Panchayats in Punjab, social audits were conducted in only 5,915. The report revealed approximately 10,653 cases of financial embezzlement, but no action was taken against anyone. He said that money was siphoned off through inflated estimates for road and canal cleaning, and even after the central team’s investigation, the recommendations for recovery were not implemented. No action was taken against those who committed corruption and did not follow the guidelines. Irregular expenses were also incurred on activities that were not even allowed under MNREGA, such as bush clearing, soil filling, and embankment construction. Shivraj Singh said that laborers are complaining that they are not even receiving their wages. Temples Remembered Only During Elections Shivraj Singh Chouhan also attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said that some people remember temples and religious faith only during elections. Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that temples and religious activities are a matter of faith, but when religious institutions are attacked, these same people remain silent. He alleged that religion is being used for electoral gains. The Union Minister said that as soon as elections approach, these people start applying tilak (religious mark on the forehead), and reciting Hanuman Chalisa and Durga Saptashati. He said that faith should be respected, not used as a political tool. DMK allies upset at Praveen Chakravarthy’s actions; Demand Rahul to initiate action

Chennai: Allies in Tamil Nadu have risen in support of DMK, dubbing Congress functionary Praveen Chakravarthy as an “irritant” in the DMK-Congress alliance. Attempts by Chakravarthy “to disrupt the alliance” with his actions and X post have prompted allies to insist that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi intervene and act against the AICC functionary and “put an end to such disruptive attempts”. Senior alliance leaders say Praveen Chakravarthy meeting TVK president Vijay, at least twice in recent months, and acting against the INDIA bloc did not go down well with allies, giving room for “ridicule and mockery” by opposition parties. The BJP has utilised the situation for its personal gains by targeting the DMK alliance with “spurious information” shared by Praveen, they allege. MDMK principal secretary Durai Vaiko said repeated incidents of Praveen speaking against the alliance disturbed harmony. “Praveen’s activities are against the interests of alliance partners and raise doubts about whether Congress is doing it on purpose. He is fuelling narratives from BJP. It is high time Rahul intervenes and stops him for the sake of the alliance,” Durai told ToI. VCK MP Ravikumar joined the chorus demanding action from Rahul Gandhi. He said such infighting weakens the morale of cadres of alliance parties. “The INDIA bloc is the strongest in TN, and our chief minister (M K Stalin) is the key reason for the alliance remaining strong. There is an image being built that DMK alliance is in trouble, and Rahul should not allow it,” Ravikumar said. Appreciating Rahul for his staunch opposition to BJP and RSS, Ravikumar said, “People like Praveen, instead of strengthening Rahul’s fight against the RSS, are weakening him.” Though CPM state secretary P Shanmugam accepted that the Praveen issue had become a concern in the alliance, he said it will not impact their performance. “But Congress should sort it out,” said Shanmugam. CPI state secretary M Veerapandian too took a similar stand. “Our alliance is ideology-based and will not be impacted by such minor issues. It is quite common in a multi-party alliance, and Congress will sort it out,” Veerapandian said. Thackeray brothers need Marathi vote consolidation, sizable Muslim and Dalit votes to win BMC polls

In the BMC polls scheduled on January 15 of next year, Congress has refused to be part of the Thackeray brother alliance, over differences in decent space and number of seats. MUMBAI: If Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray eye to win the Asia’s largest civic body (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) polls, the leaders have to repeat Shiv Sena (UBT)’s 2024 Lok Sabha performance. It will help them to win as many as 113 seats out of 227 in the BMC polls. However, Shiv Sena (UBT) had won the three seats out of six Lok Sabha seats while it lost one seat, by 34 votes in Mumbai. Congress’s vote base — Muslim and Dalit — and Sharad Pawar’s supporters from the western Maharashtra region who stay in Mumbai, helped to secure several seats. MVA was successful in restricting the BJP and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena to one seat each only in the financial capital. In the BMC polls scheduled on January 15 of next year, Congress has refused to be part of the Thackeray brother alliance, over differences in decent space and number of seats. Also, Raj Thackeray’s stand against North India is considered problematic for Congress’s North Indian voters. However, the silver lining for Uddhav Thackeray is, Raj Thackeray-led MNS has a seven per cent vote share in Mumbai, which will help them both to fill the gap caused by Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Congress, but that is not enough at all, as there is still a gap of six per cent. Thackerays has to go an extra mile by addressing as many rallies as possible, galvanising the ground network and utilising funds. Only then ther is a possiblity, that they will be able to swing the verdict in their favour. Despite Thackeray’s alliance, the BJP is unfazed and is comfortable on the ground as it has 27 per cent vote share in Mumbai, and even DCM Eknath Shinde will pull in at least five per cent vote share. Most likely, the BJP and Shiv Sena will march towards a historic win in this closely contested BMC election. Shinde led Shiv Sena has won the six state assembly seats in Mumbai, while BJP had won 15, and DCM Ajit Pawar led NCP has won one seat; therefore, arithmetically, BJP and Shiv Sena are unperturbed. The split in Maha Vikas Aghadi has boosted the confidence of the BJP and its Gujarati, Marwari and North Indian vote bank in Mumbai remains unaffected. However, the opposition are getting divided into multiple forces. Meanwhile, if Muslim and Dalit votes get divided among the Thackerays, Congress, NCP SP, Samajwadi Party, MIM, then it will be difficult to repeat the Lok Sabha’s template again in BMC polls. DMK high command directs party functionaries not to respond to Praveen Chakravarty

Chennai: A day after Congress functionary Praveen Chakravarty triggered a row, stating Tamil Nadu’s debt situation was alarming, DMK high command issued a directive to the party through state industries minister T R B Raaja “to stop reacting and focus on constructive work”. Raaja on X asked DMK functionaries not to get distracted by such tweets. “Urge our ecosystem to please avoid engaging with anyone with private agendas. We have a larger war to fight with those trying to curtail the growth of TN. Beware of unwanted distractions,” Raaja said. On Sunday, Praveen Chakravarty took social media by storm when he tweeted that the debt of TN doubled under the DMK govt and was much higher than UP. Chakaravarthy’s assessment of TN’s debt situation had evoked angry responses from senior DMK functionaries. Insisting that functionaries focus on development schemes of DMK govt, Raaja said, “Concentrate on our leader’s pathbreaking schemes and development-oriented thoughts. Use your time to share the achievements of the Dravidian Model govt of our leader CM M K Stalin. Don’t fall for diversionary hooks.” TNCC functionaries too issued rebuttals to Chakravarty’s tweet. Raaja said Praveen Chakravarty acted out of desperation. “He (Praveen) knows very well that he will not get a seat in the 2026 election if DMK is with Congress, and in desperation he is speaking against DMK. But Congress leader Rahul Gandhi knows well that DMK is the key ally of Congress for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and will not go against us,” Raaja told TOI. The minister said Praveen Chakravarty projected himself as a person close to Rahul Gandhi, but Rahul does not engage him in taking decisions, especially in matters related to Tamil Nadu. BMC Elections 2026: Congress Expands Base With VBA Tie-Up, Aims To Consolidate Dalit & Minority Votes

Congress and the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) have formed a surprising alliance for the Mumbai BMC elections, ending 25 years of rivalry. Congress will contest 150 seats, VBA 62, and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha 9-12. The alliance aims to consolidate Dalit, minority, and north Indian votes, posing a challenge to Sena-MNS and BJP ahead of 2029 polls. Mumbai: Burying political animosity of the past 25 years, Congress on Sunday sprung a surprise by joining hands with the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) for BMC elections. Under the arrangement, Congress will contest 150 seats, while VBA will field candidates in 62 wards, leaving 9-12 seats for Rashtriya Samaj Paksha led by Mahadeo Jankar. The alliance was announced by Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Harshwardhan Sapkal, along with VBA state vice-president Dhairyavardhan Pundkar. Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad was absent, reportedly due to her engagement in a screening committee meeting to finalise candidates. The coming together of the Congress and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) has once again proved that anything and everything is possible when it comes to politics. If we look back into recent electoral history, we will remember that not once but twice the VBA gnawed into the Congress vote base. During the 2014 Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections, the VBA in alliance with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), contributed to the defeat of Congress’ several candidates. In the 2019 elections again, it significantly dented the Congress-NCP alliance’s chances of returning to power on its own. According to Congress leaders, the VBA ensured the defeat of at least 25 candidates from the Congress and the NCP. The party attracted a substantial share of Dalit votes, which traditionally belonged to the grand old party. The VBA is said to have polled 41 lakh votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and 24 lakh votes in the Assembly elections held the same year. Its candidates finished second in 10 constituencies and third in several others. In the 2024 Assembly elections, the VBA impacted nearly 20 seats where the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) lost to the Mahayuti by margins of less than 10,000 votes. Similarly, in the Lok Sabha elections held last year, the MVA lost a few seats due to the presence of VBA candidates in constituencies such as Akola, Buldhana, Hatkanangle and Mumbai North West. The emerging understanding between the Congress and the VBA is being seen as a precursor to a possible alliance ahead of the 2029 elections, according to a party leader. “The Congress cannot remain dependent on the Shiv Sena (UBT), especially as it may continue its alliance with the Raj Thackeray-led MNS, which is against our ideology,” the leader said. The Congress is also keen on expanding its base in Vidarbha, a region that has traditionally been a party bastion. Even in the recent municipal council elections, the party secured its maximum number of seats from Vidarbha. With upcoming elections to municipal corporations and Zilla Parishads, the alliance with the VBA could prove advantageous, the leader added. On the other hand, a Congress-VBA alliance is likely to pose challenges for the Sena (UBT)-MNS combine as it could attract a large share of Dalit votes along with support from north Indian voters and minorities. “North Indians and minorities do not vote for the MNS and this could significantly affect the Thackeray brothers,” the leader said. For the BJP and the Shinde Sena, the alliance may create problems in a few constituencies. However, by denting the Thackeray vote bank, it could also indirectly benefit the Mahayuti. The BJP primarily relies on Gujarati and north Indian voters and requires substantial support from Marathi voters across communities. For the Shinde Sena, the Congress-VBA candidates could come to its aid – provided they draw votes away from the Thackeray faction. ‘Congress all united’: Digvijaya Singh after RSS remark; condemns BJP’s ‘attempts to sow discord’

NEW DELHI: Veteran politician Digvijaya Singh reacted to the RSS praise controversy on Sunday, categorically assuring that Congress was “united”. He targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party for attempting to “sow discord” within the “Nehru-Gandhi family”. “There is no difference in ideology. We (Congress) are all united, and this Nehru-Gandhi family is a family in which two people have been martyred. I strongly condemn the BJP’s attempts to sow discord within this family,” Singh said. The reaction came on the day Congress marked its 140th foundation anniversary. “Rahul Gandhi has started this initiative (strengthening the organisation) from the district level and below. The process for that is underway. It will be completed soon,” he added. — ANI (@ANI) Singh triggered a controversy by posting a black-and-white image showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi seated on the floor beside senior BJP leader LK Advani in Gujarat. In his post, Singh remarked on how grassroots workers can rise through the party hierarchy to become chief minister and even prime minister, crediting the “strength of organization” for such upward mobility. He also tagged several senior Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, Prime Minister Modi, and the official Congress accounts. — digvijaya_28 (@digvijaya_28) BJP claimed that Digvijay Singh’s remarks lauding the organisational strength of the BJP and the RSS amounted to “open defiance” of Rahul Gandhi’s leadership within the Congress. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that Gandhi was turning the party “on its head” after being pushed to the margins of its leadership structure. “It’s because our Narendra Modi is ‘guddri ke lal’ (diamond in the rough) and their leader is ‘Jawahar ke lal’ (great-grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru). Since our Narendra Modi has risen to top from bottom, he is taking the party (BJP) also to the top from bottom,” Sudhanshu Trivedi said. Singh later clarified that although he acknowledges the importance of a robust organisational framework, he continues to strongly oppose the RSS and PM Modi. “I support the organisation. I am against the RSS and Modi ji. You have misunderstood. I have praised ‘sangathan’. I was, am, and will remain a staunch opponent of the RSS and Modi. Is it a bad thing to strengthen and praise the organisation?” he said. ‘Congress not just a party, but voice of India’s soul’: Rahul Gandhi on party’s foundation day; hails legacy

NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday asserted that Congress is not just a political party but “the voice of India’s soul” that has always stood with the weak, the deprived and hardworking people. His remarks came on the 140th Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress. Rahul attended the celebrations at the party’s Indira Bhawan headquarters in New Delhi. Sharing a message on X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “The Congress is not merely a political party; it is the voice of India’s soul – standing steadfast with every weak, every deprived, and every toiler.” — RahulGandhi (@RahulGandhi) The Rae Bareli MP extended greetings to party members and paid tribute to the Congress’s legacy. “Heartiest greetings to every Congressman on the Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress today. We pay homage to that historic legacy and those great sacrifices that won freedom for India, laid the foundation of the Constitution, and strengthened the values of democracy, secularism, social justice, and equality,” he said. “We resolve to fight even more resolutely for truth, courage, and the defence of the Constitution against hatred, injustice, and tyranny,” he added. Mallikarjun Kharge: Congress an ideology and ideologies never die

NEW DELHI: Party president Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that “Congress is an ideology and ideologies never die”, as Indian National Congress marked its 140th foundation day on Sunday. The event at Indira Bhawan headquarters of Congress in New Delhi to mark the occasion was attended by Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, K C Venugopal, Ajay Maken and other party functionaries and members. On X, Rahul said that Congress is not just a political party, but the voice of India’s soul that has stood with every weak, deprived and hardworking person. “The resolve is to fight even more strongly the battle for truth, courage, and to protect the Constitution against hatred, injustice and dictatorship,” he said. Addressing the gathering, Kharge said that “to those who say ‘Congress is finished’, I want to tell them that our power may be less, but our spine is still straight”. “We have not compromised – not with the Constitution, not with secularism, and not with the rights of the poor. We may not be in office, but we will not bargain,” he said. He took the opportunity to urge Congress workers across country to unite and reach out to people at grassroots level to build a mass movement for restoration of MGNREGA, calling it a “vital lifeline for the poor and vulnerable”. Calling for a united fight to ‘save the democracy’, Kharge said the Constitution and democracy are under grave threat. “This fight is not merely electoral. It is a battle for the soul of India. If Congress does not fight, who will protect the Constitution and democracy?” he asked. Kharge alleged that in past 11 years, BJP-led govt has systematically weakened institutions built by Congress. ‘Service, commitment, ethics’: Revanth Reddy praises Sonia Gandhi amid Digvijaya Singh’s RSS post; lauds Congress

NEW DELHI: Amid the ongoing controversy over Digvijaya Singh’s remarks praising the RSS’s organisational strength, Andhra Pradesh chief minister Revanth Reddy hailed Sonia Gandhi’s role in Congress leadership, citing examples of elevation of Manmohan Singh and P V Narasimha Rao to the post of Prime Minister. In a social media post on X, Reddy, on the 140th foundation day of the Congress, said that the party “has shaped every defining chapter of modern India.” “Congress: a force for the people of India was born 140 years ago on this day. The story of the Indian National Congress is the story of Indian democracy in motion. When one reflects on the leadership of Smt Sonia Gandhi Ji, we find service, commitment, ethics and values,” Reddy said. — revanth_anumula (@revanth_anumula) “Under Smt Sonia Gandhi Ji’s leadership, it became possible for Shri P V Narasimha Rao garu, who started his public career from a remote village in Telangana, to rise to become Prime Minister of the country. Smt Sonia Gandhi Ji also made an economist like Dr Manmohan Singh Ji the Prime Minister. From leading India’s freedom struggle to framing the Constitution, from building democratic institutions to uniting a diverse nation, the Indian National Congress has shaped every defining chapter of modern India,” he added. This comes after Digvijaya Singh stirred a controversy by sharing a black-and-white photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sitting on the floor near senior BJP leader L K Advani in Gujarat. Singh commented on the ability of grassroots workers to ascend through the ranks to become chief minister and eventually Prime Minister, attributing it to the “power of organisation.” He tagged several senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, Prime Minister Modi, and the official Congress handles. Reportedly, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister rued “over-centralisation” in the Congress and pushed for decentralisation in the presence of top leadership at the CWC meeting held on Saturday. He also complained that district and state chiefs were appointed by the AICC and questioned why decisions taken at the Udaipur Chintan Shivir, including setting up an election management department, had not been implemented. Last week, Singh had also praised Rahul Gandhi for his stance on socio-economic issues, giving him “full marks,” while calling for internal reforms within the Congress. Drawing a parallel with Rahul Gandhi’s push for Election Commission reforms, Singh argued that the party itself needed similar changes. In another post on X, he wrote, “Rahul ji, you are absolutely ‘bang on’ in matters of socio-economic issues. Full marks. But now please look at Congress also. Like the Election Commission needs reforms, so does the Indian National Congress. You have started with ‘Sangathan Srijan’, but we need more pragmatic, decentralised functioning.” He added, “I am sure you would do it because I know you can do it. The only problem is that it is not easy to ‘convince’ you!!” Courtesy : TOI Note: This news is originally published on https:/timesofindia.com/bha and is used purely for non-profit/non-commercial purposes, especially human rights
