Dalits’ resentment in Mangaluru, Karnataka: Allegations of negligence at DCRE station, police warned

Dalit activists question the functioning of DCRE stations, warn police, prepare for agitation Mangaluru: Despite the establishment of separate Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE) stations in the district to investigate cases of atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Tribes, the victims are not getting justice. Dissatisfied with this situation, Dalit activists of Dakshina Kannada have expressed their resentment. Dalit activists put forth their grievances before police officials at a meeting held at the Mangaluru Police Commissioner’s Office on Sunday. The meeting focused on the grievances of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities and discussed the functioning of the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate and Dakshina Kannada District Police. The meeting was chaired by DCP (Law and Order) Mithun HN and Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar S. Bhoomaraddi. During the meeting, Jagdish Pandeshwar mentioned a case in which a Dalit woman was sent obscene calls and messages via WhatsApp by a man living abroad. The woman lodged a complaint, but no action was taken. The case was sent to the DCRE police station, but the accused was not arrested. It is alleged that the station in-charge also gave irresponsible answers. The activists warned that if no concrete action is taken on such cases till the next meeting, they will be forced to agitate. They also demanded to make public the complete record of cases of atrocities registered in the DCRE police station. On this, DCP Mithun said that since the DCRE does not come under the jurisdiction of the City Police Commissioner at present, a letter will be sent to the DG of DCRE regarding the complaints of the activists. Other demands of Dalit leaders In the meeting, Dalit leader SP Anand said that the government should restore the old process of selection of self-employment beneficiaries for the Scheduled Caste-Tribe community. Earlier this selection was done by a committee headed by the District Deputy Commissioner, but for the last 15 years this work is in the hands of local MLAs. Due to this, most of the benefits go to the influential class and people close to the MLAs, while the real needy are deprived. Rajan Chaudhary Courtesy : Hindi News
Brutal attack on Dalit youth in Junagadh, third casteist atrocity in 21 days

Brutal attack on Dalit youth in Junagadh, video goes viral; Third casteist violence in 21 days raises questions again. Ahmedabad: A Dalit youth was brutally beaten up, robbed and threatened with death in Junagadh, Gujarat. This incident has come to light as the third casteist atrocity against Dalits in the last 21 days. The viral video of the incident shows that even today, decades after Independence, casteism is deeply rooted in the society. What is the whole matter? The incident took place on the afternoon of August 16, when the victim had gone to meet a friend. Then a boy came to him and pleaded for help as his brother was being taken away. The victim and his friend followed the boy to the Swami Vivekanand School ground, where they understood that it was a trap. In the ground, three upper caste youths surrounded the youth and questioned him about his whereabouts. When the youth told them that he was from Kadiyawad, a youth named Hitesh and his two unidentified companions started insulting him with casteist slurs and beat him badly with belts and sticks, causing serious injuries on the youth’s body. The attackers also snatched the youth’s mobile phone and threatened to kill him if he complained to the police. The victim told people at the Junagadh Civil Hospital, “They hit me with belts and sticks, snatched my phone and threatened to kill me. Today it is my turn, tomorrow it could be someone else’s. I only want justice.” The police have registered a case under several sections of the Indian Penal Code at the Junagadh A Division police station. Separate teams have been formed to nab the accused. Deputy SP Hitesh Dhandaliya assured that “strict legal action will be taken as soon as possible.” This attack in Junagadh is not the only one. This is the third attack against Dalits in Gujarat in the last three weeks, which shows that casteism is still fuelling violence. Each incident is a crack in the promise of equality in society and a grim indication of the urgent need for justice and protection for vulnerable communities. Rajan Chaudhary Courtesy : Hindi News

‘Kerala Congress MLA Messaged Me On Telegram, Asked For Sex’: Trans Woman

Speaking to NDTV, Ms Vishnu said she first met Rahul Mamkootathil during campaigning for the June 2022 Thrikkakara by-election that the ruling Left Democratic Front’s Uma Thomas won. Kerala transgender activist Avanthika Vishnu – who said Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil sexually harassed her and demanded she submit to his rape fantasy – told NDTV she was initially hesitant about coming forward with the allegations because of his political standing. She had earlier said she flagged her concerns to the Congress but no action was taken. She said she only stepped up after other women, including Malayalam actor Rini George made similar accusations. Ms George, however, did not name the Congress leader; she only said a ‘youth leader of a prominent political party’ had been sending her objectionable messages and invited her to a five-star hotel meet. Mr Mamkootathil has denied all allegations that Ms George was talking about him, but earlier today he stepped down as President of the Congress’ Kerala youth wing and demanded those accusing him – Ms George, Ms Vishnu, and others – make their case in a court of law. Speaking to NDTV, Ms Vishnu said she first met Rahul Mamkootathil during campaigning for the June 2022 Thrikkakara by-election that the ruling Left Democratic Front’s Uma Thomas won. “After the Kerala by-election he messaged me on Facebook to say ‘hi’ and we had a casual conversation. After that he messaged me on Telegram and asked for sex. He wanted to meet in Bengaluru or Hyderabad to play out rape fantasies,” she told NDTV. Asked about waiting for three years before speaking out, Avanthika Vishnu said some of her close friends knew of the harassment but she had hesitated to speak out because “he is a famous MLA in Kerala”. She also said that now that she had, she faces cyber harassment. Ms Vishnu said she had been encouraged to speak after other women also accused him. “I’m afraid he will use his power to destroy evidence… afraid it will come down to my word versus his and he is a famous politician,” she said, appealing for emotional and legal support, for her and for the trans community, from the government, police, and society at large. On Thursday Rini George made similar allegations. “I came in contact with the politician through social media. His inappropriate behaviour began three years ago, when I first received objectionable messages from him,” she said, claiming the political leader in question even offered to book a room at a five-star hotel for her ‘visit’. She accused senior leaders of the concerned party of ignoring her complaints and said the young leader continued to receive prominent positions within the party despite her warnings. Mr Mamkootathil, meanwhile, has denied all charges. He has not yet reacted to allegations from Avanthika Vishnu but, with regard to the earlier claim, said “I challenge the person who complained against me to prove the case in court. No concrete complaint has been filed.” “The actress is my friend, and I don’t believe the person she mentioned was me. She is my good friend and will remain so. I believe that I have not done anything against the law or the Constitution of the country until now,” he added. Asked about an audio clip released by a Malayalam news channel alleging he forced a third woman to terminate a pregnancy, he replied it is not difficult to create such clips today. ‘Lokniti’ against the nation

The political circle fell into complete silence when the Central Election Commission issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, for his allegations pertaining to Maharashtra assembly elections. The commission through this notice asked Rahul Gandhi to file an affidavit regarding these allegations or apologize to the country. When the Commission sent such a notice to Rahul Gandhi, who doubts a constitutional institute like Election Commission and the honesty of all government employees without giving any solid evidence, it naturally caused a stir among people from various sections, who vehemently oppose BJP and Narendra Modi. Rahul Gandhi has been continuously accusing the Election Commission over Maharashtra assembly polls for the last 6-7 months. He accused the Election Commission of ‘vote theft’ by holding a press conference in Delhi recently. He alleged that 1 crore voters have increased in Maharashtra within 6 months from the Lok Sabha elections. The actual number of voters increased is only 40 lakh. Rahul Gandhi alleged that voters from other states were registered in Maharashtra by BJP in collaboration with the Election Commission and they went on to win the assembly elections with the help of this increased number of voters. In case a person not belonging to the constituency objects to changes in the voter list, it is mandatory for him to file an affidavit before the Election Commission. Based on this rule itself the Election commission demanded Rahul Gandhi to either file an affidavit or apologize to the entire country for the false allegations. It’s been 5 days since the Election Commission sent this notice. Rahul Gandhi had not filed an affidavit nor had he apologized till the time of writing this article. Meanwhile, Sanjay Kumar, co-founder of CSDS-Lokniti, a research organization that predicts election results, retracted his tweet regarding the Maharashtra elections and apologized to the Election Commission. It is extremely important to understand the connection between this apology and the notice sent to Rahul Gandhi. Understanding this connection can help reveal the conspiracy behind these rampant allegations against the Election Commission and Bharatiya Janata Party. A lot of organizations have come up in the country in the last 35 – 40 years which are in the business of predicting the election results. Psephology is a method of finding out trends in voting by interacting with the voters and predicting the likely winner based on that. This methodology is now well developed not only in the country but in the entire world. 1 to 2 percent of the total voters are interviewed during this survey. This is called a sample survey. Based on this, predictions are made about which party will win the majority in the election. In the last few years, post poll surveys are also being carried out along with the pre poll surveys. Predictions of these Exit Polls are based on the interactions held with selected voters after they cast their votes. CSDS-Lokniti is an organization that predicts such results. Few days back, Sanjay Kumar had claimed that compared to the Lok Sabha elections the number of voters in Ramtek and Deolali assembly constituencies had decreased by 38.45 percent and 36.82 percent respectively. “We drew the wrong conclusions from the Election Commission’s data, I sincerely apologize for this mistake,” tweeted Sanjay Kumar. It was on the basis of this analysis of voting figures done by Sanjay Kumar, that Congress leaders like Pawan Khera were accusing the Election Commission of vote theft. The Prince in his press conference in Delhi had said that he was presenting the statistics of the Election Commission itself on a big screen using modern technology. When Sanjay Kumar tweeted about the decrease in voters in Ramtek and Deolali, Congress immediately hurled accusations against the Election Commission once again. Sanjay Kumar, who retracted his tweet and issued an apology, was asked in a television interview about the allegations being made by the Congress based on his information. Sanjay Kumar while answering this said that our conclusions were wrong and therefore we are apologizing. If Congress is accusing the Election Commission based on our findings, then Congress should also apologize. It is not a mere coincidence that Sanjay Kumar apologized after Election Commission’s final ultimatum to Rahul Gandhi to prove his allegations or apologize to the country. Even Congress won’t believe Sanjay Kumar, when he says that he is not aware that the accusations made by Congress are based on his information. Now the question remains, what exactly do people like Rahul Gandhi and Sanjay Kumar want to achieve? Rahul Gandhi’s language and overall body language clearly shows that his aim is to create distrust in a constitutional institution like the Election Commission. The Election Commission has deleted the names of around 65 lakh voters after verifying their identity proofs in Bihar. The Election Commission has made it clear time and again that deleting the name of infiltrators in the voting list is the purpose of this verification. Rahul Gandhi has taken out a march in Bihar along with Tejashwi Yadav against the verification of voter lists. Rahul Gandhi is raising the issue of voter lists in Maharashtra during this march as well. It is justifiable to question the Election Commission for errors in the voter lists. However, Rahul Gandhi’s real intention is to create distrust towards constitutional institutions, government machinery and government employees in the minds of people by accusing an institution like the Election Commission of vote theft based on these errors. Creating anarchy through this is Rahul Gandhi’s hidden agenda. This is a conspiracy to deliberately destabilize the country while vehemently opposing the government. Safai Karmi dies of electrocution in Chennai: Angry community says- Such an incident every month, how long will Dalit women have to sacrifice?

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the bereaved family, along with guaranteed employment for one family member at GCC. Chennai – A sample of the dangerous conditions under which sanitation workers have to work in the city came to light recently. In a heart-wrenching incident, R. Varalakshmi, a 30-year-old conservancy worker of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), died of electrocution early Saturday morning in Kannagi Nagar. Varalakshmi lived in a rehabilitation colony in South Chennai, which mainly houses the Dalit community. Varalakshmi, who is survived by her husband and two young children, was on her way to begin her morning cleaning duty when she accidentally stepped into stagnant rainwater that was covered by a broken electrical power cable. The incident, which occurred amid heavy rains in parts of Tamil Nadu, has once again highlighted how waterlogging in low-lying areas like Kannagi Nagar, a slum area known for inadequate infrastructure and flood susceptibility, is marred by administrative negligence. Eyewitnesses said a broken cable, possibly damaged by torrential rains, was carelessly left on the flooded road, killing a sanitation worker. Varalakshmi, who had been employed as a contracted sanitation worker for several years, collapsed after coming in contact with the live wire and was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Local residents and activists attributed her death to administrative negligence, including lack of timely maintenance by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) and GCC’s negligence in preventing recurring problems in flood-prone slums. The incident could have been avoided had Tangedco fulfilled its responsibility, a community organiser in Kannagi Nagar said. Following the incident, users on social media platforms have been expressing their outrage over the systemic neglect towards the safety of workers. This is the fifth electric shock-related death in Chennai in the last seven weeks, four of which occurred during the recent rains, raising concerns over the city’s preparedness for monsoon challenges, said Dalit rights activist and author Shalin Maria Lawrence. Varalakshmi’s family has demanded accountability and compensation. The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the bereaved family, as well as guaranteed employment for a family member at GCC. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed condolences through a statement, directing officials to investigate the incident and expedite infrastructure improvements in vulnerable neighbourhoods. Critics from labour rights groups, however, argue that such reactive measures are inadequate, demanding mandatory safety equipment, mechanised cleaning tools and strict enforcement of protocols to protect sanitation workers who are mainly from marginalised Dalit communities. The GCC has launched an inquiry into the cable break, blaming it on weather conditions, but has not commented on wider safety lapses. Geetha Sunil Pillai Courtesy : Hindi News
The Mooknayak Impact: Dalit settlement in Amreli, Gujarat gets permanent drainage solution, report sent to Scheduled Caste Commission

The Amreli District Panchayat Office announced the construction of an underground drainage system in the SC area as a permanent solution. The project is funded under the 15th Finance Commission (rural component) and 10% district-level Finance Commission grant. The Gram Panchayat has passed the necessary resolutions for this. Amreli- There is a relief news for the Scheduled Caste (SC) community in Jaswantgadh village in Amreli district of Gujarat. The problem of sewage diversion here has now been resolved. On June 25, The Mooknayak published a report titled “In this village of Gujarat, upper castes released dirty water in Dalit settlement, administration mute spectator!”. The report said that the upper caste residents of the village had deliberately dumped their underground drainage system into an open monsoon drain near Dr. Ambedkar Colony, which is a predominantly SC settlement. This led to the garbage and faeces from their homes accumulating near the Ambedkar colony. After the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) intervened after the problem was highlighted, the gram panchayat has now passed proposals for an underground drainage system in the Dalit basti. The Mooknayak reported that the drain diverted to the Dalit basti, which was meant only for rainwater, became a drain that flowed into the houses with filth and faeces. Residents described it as a “permanent swamp of humiliation”. During rains, dirty water would flood their homes, increasing health risks. With an Anganwadi centre nearby, children were at risk of waterborne diseases and long-term developmental risks. Local health workers reported alarming mosquito infestations and a rise in diseases. Despite repeated complaints to the gram panchayat, taluka panchayat and the district administration, no action was taken. Local media Khabarantar highlighted the crisis, which led to The Mooknayak reporting and bringing it to national attention. Social activist Kirit Rathore, who provided photographic evidence and testimonies, said, “This is not just poor drainage; it is a well-planned form of caste oppression. Upper castes are using garbage as a weapon to humiliate Dalits.” Based on The Mooknayak report, T. Emmanuel Dhinakaran, former state co-incharge of the BJP Tamil Nadu Minority Morcha and a proponent of social justice, raised the issue before the NCSC. In his petition, Dhinakaran called the episode a “blatant violation of the constitutional rights of Dalits” and sought immediate action. His efforts garnered widespread support for the issue, cutting across political boundaries. “This is not a question of sanitation, but of dignity and equality,” he said. On 9 July 2025, just two weeks after The Mooknayak report, the NCSC began a formal investigation. The commission issued notices to the Amreli district collector, the district development officer (DDO) and the Scheduled Caste Welfare Department of Gujarat. The letter (reference number ESDW/BE/GJ/2025/300700, dated 7 July 2025) sought an action report within 15 days and warned of summons under Article 338 of the Constitution on non-compliance. In this village of Gujarat, upper castes released dirty water in Dalit settlement, administration mute spectator! In response to the NCSC’s direction, the Amreli district panchayat office submitted an action report (number PNC/8/Mis/Jashwantgadh/1012-1015/2025) on August 2. This letter, written to the NCSC Deputy Director in Ahmedabad, acknowledged that due to heavy rains, garbage had accumulated in the open drain, causing sanitation problems. The gram panchayat immediately started cleaning work with a JCB machine and the area was completely cleaned. Photographic evidence was also attached to confirm the work. Most importantly, the report announced a permanent solution: construction of an underground drainage system in the SC area. The project is funded under the 15th Finance Commission (rural component) and a 10% district-level Finance Commission grant. The gram panchayat has passed the necessary resolutions for it. “We have cleared the area and are committed to a long-term solution,” the letter said. As of August 24, local sources confirmed that the clearing had mitigated the immediate hazards and that preliminary work for the underground drainage system had begun, with completion expected in the next few months. New twist in gang rape of Dalit girl: Family alleges- Police made them change the FIR thrice, accused are pressurizing for compromise

New facts have come to light in the gang rape case of a 14-year-old Dalit girl in Kakwan area of Kanpur. The victim’s family presented their plight in front of MLA Rahul Bachcha Sonkar. The family said that the police made them change the FIR thrice. The victim was made to wander between Kakwan and Kalyanpur for medical examination. This is what happened The incident happened on Wednesday night. When the girl went to the field to defecate, four youths of the village caught her. Arun and Nikku held the girl’s hands and feet, while Ravindra and Deepu raped her. The accused also threatened to kill the girl. The police have arrested all the four accused and sent them to jail. The pain of the victim’s family spilled in front of the MLA The family members say that the police did not let them meet their daughter for 24 hours. Now the family members of the accused are pressurizing them to settle the case by giving money through other people. Villagers said that due to political animosity, the village head did not give the benefit of government toilet to about 50 families, while one thousand rupees were charged from each. BDO made for commission in drains and roads The MLA expressed displeasure over the negligence of the BDO in this matter. When the BDO did not pick up the phone, he talked to the DPRO and CDO and asked whether the BDO is made only to earn commission in drains and roads. Why has the BDO not reached the village yet? Why have the villagers not got the benefit of the toilet scheme yet? The government gives money, it does not go from the pockets of the officials. Assurance of all possible help The MLA assured the victim’s family that there is no need to fear anyone. If there is any problem, call us immediately. On the complaint of the villagers that the accused families have forcibly occupied the land of the village society and built a house, he called the Tehsildar and directed him to investigate the matter and take strict action. Avantika disclosed to the media that she had been receiving sexually explicit messages and calls from Rahul Mamkootathil for an extended period, and she reported these incidents to the BJP Palakkad district president. She stated, “Rahul is a sexual predator and told me to rape him.” After Rini Anna George, Transgender Woman Alleges Youth Congress Leader Rahul Mamkootathil Of Sexual Assault Attempt Rahul Mamkootathil, once a rising star in Kerala politics, resigned as Youth Congress president amid allegations of sending obscene messages. As he stepped down, further accusations of sexual assault and inappropriate communications surfaced. In a separate incident, Avantika, a transgender woman, accused Rahul of being a sexual predator, alleging he made offensive remarks. Avantika revealed to the media that she has been receiving sexually perverted messages and phone calls from Rahul for a long time and that she has told these things to the BJP Palakkad district president. Avantika said, “Rahul is a sexual pervert and he told me to rape him”. Actress Rini Ann George accused Youth Congress leader Rahul of sending obscene messages and misbehaving with her despite warnings, saying he had a careless attitude. Around the same time, phone recordings surfaced suggesting a young woman was forced to have an abortion, and police also received a complaint against Rahul. Following this, Rahul resigned as Youth Congress state president, though he denied the allegations, claiming no one had formally complained against him. Later, BJP leader and social activist Avantika, a trans woman, also came forward with accusations. She said she met Rahul during the Thrikkakara by-election, and though they first became friends on social media, he soon began making inappropriate remarks about sexual frustration and even mentioned rape. Avantika added that Rahul told her he could only meet outside Kerala in cities like Bengaluru or Hyderabad, and she had already informed some Congress leaders and friends about his behavior. Avantika said she had not revealed these matters earlier because she feared for her life, being a public servant and MLA. She explained that she chose to speak out only after actress Rini Ann George made her allegations public. According to Avantika, Rahul even called her on the same day, worried that she might expose him. She added that Rahul usually sends messages on Telegram that disappear after being read once, making it impossible to take screenshots, and this is how he destroys evidence. Kerala: Elder who saved tribal missing, serious allegations against farm-stay owner, FIR registered

75-year-old tribal Thirunavukkarasu mysteriously missing, disappearance creates panic after rescuing Vellayan from farm-stay. Palakkad/Kerala: The Kollengod police have registered an FIR on the complaint of Mariyappan K., state president of the Tribal Protection Organization. The complaint states that his relative and 75-year-old tribal elder Thirunavukkarasu has been missing since around 11 pm on Thursday night. Thirunavukkarasu is the same person who first exposed the plight of 54-year-old Chambukkuzhi Vellayan. Vellayan, who hails from the Eravallan tribe and lives in Muchakundu in Muthalamada, was allegedly held hostage for five days at a farm-stay called Western Gateways. The farm-stay is located near the Oorkkulam forest. It is alleged that the owner and the employees kept Vellayan locked in a room, starved him and beat him. Thirunavukkarasu immediately informed the local tribal activists and public representatives about this. After this, Vellayan was rescued from there with the help of Kollengod police and social workers. But, according to Mariyappan, “As soon as the Vellayan incident came to light, Thirunavukkarasu suddenly disappeared. He was nowhere to be seen even when we were rescuing Vellayan.” Allegations against farm-stay owner The complaint states that farm-stay owner Prabhu may have a hand in Thirunavukkarasu’s disappearance, as he knew a lot about the illegal activities going on in the farm-stay. Kollengod police said, “We received the complaint late Friday night and we have registered an FIR under Section 57 (attempt to trace a missing person) of the Kerala Police Act 2011. Investigation into the case has been started.” At present, Prabhu and some of his employees are absconding. The police have registered a case against Prabhu for attempt to murder and under the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. At the same time, Prabhu’s mother Ranganayaki has been detained by the police in the Vellayan case. How did the incident happen? Muthalamada Gram Panchayat’s former president and current member Kalpana Devi said that on August 17 (Sunday), Vellayan had gone to the farm-stay for labor. There he drank the liquor kept in the premises. Angered by this, Prabhu and his employees locked him in a room. Vellayan said that he was given food only once a day, but was often beaten and kicked. He remained imprisoned in the farm-stay for about five days. He was admitted to the Palakkad District Hospital early Friday morning and was discharged the same evening. Strictness of the government and the commission Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Backward Class Welfare Minister O.R. Kelu has sought an immediate report from the Director of the Tribal Development Department on this incident. At the same time, the Scheduled Caste/Tribe Commission has also sought a separate report from the Palakkad District Police Chief. Rajan Chaudhary Courtesy: Hindi News
