A case has come to light in Maharashtra where a Dalit man was stripped and brutally assaulted for dancing in a program. The victim committed suicide the very next day of the incident. Police have arrested two people of alleged upper caste in this case and one is still absconding. The connection of this case has also emerged with another case seven years old.
The incident took place in Kopardi village of Ahmednagar district. The deceased has been identified as 37 year old Vitthal alias Nitin Kantilal Shinde. He belonged to the Hindu Mahar Dalit community.
According to the report of Indian Express, Vitthal’s father has filed a case at Karjat Police Station. It has been told in the complaint that his son had gone to the village on the night of 1 May to participate in the folk art program ‘Tamasha’. It is alleged that on the same night at around 11 pm, three people used caste based words against Vitthal and assaulted him for dancing in the program. According to the complaint, the accused then took Vitthal to a cremation ground, made him remove his clothes and assaulted him again. It is alleged that the three accused also snatched Vitthal’s phone due to which he could not even call anyone for help.
Vitthal reportedly reached home and told his family about the incident and said that he wanted to end his life. The very next day on 2 May, Vitthal committed suicide at his home. The police have also received a letter, in which three people have been held responsible.
The accused include Bunty Babasaheb Sudrik, Swapnil Baban Sudrik and Vaibhav Madhukar Sudrik. All three of them belong to Maratha community. A case has been registered against all three under different sections of IPC and SC/ST Act. Deputy Superintendent of Police Vivekananda Wakhare told The Indian Express that Bunty and Vaibhav have been arrested. Swapnil is being searched.
Police said that Vitthal’s family members and supporters staged a massive protest over the incident on May 3 and refused to accept Vitthal’s body until all the accused were arrested. Heavy police force has been deployed in Kopardi.
Connection to which case of 2016?
In 2016, a case of gangrape and murder of a 14-year-old girl from the Maratha community came to light. In November 2017, an Ahmednagar court had sentenced three accused, Jitendra Babulal Shinde alias Pappu, Santosh Gorakh Bhawal and Nitin Gopinath Bhailume, to death. After this, in September 2022, Jitendra committed suicide in jail itself.
Police sources said that Vitthal Shinde is Jitendra’s cousin and one of the accused in the assault is a relative of the deceased 14-year-old girl.
