Two school girls were allegedly forced to clean an underground water tank
TIRUPUR: Two school girls were allegedly forced to clean an underground water tank in the Adi Dravidar Welfare Girls’ Hostel in Avinashi.
More than 30 dalit girls studying in the Avinashi Government Higher Secondary School are staying in the hostel on the Coimbatore Road, near the Avinashi Veterinary Polyclinic.
It was alleged that a class XI student from Ooty and a class X student from Cuddalore were asked to clean the tank in the hostel on Tuesday after the hostel administration failed to find a worker for the job.
8/3/2019 Two school girls forced to clean hostel’s underground tank “The tank was more than six feet deep and there was one manhole. It was a dangerous situation for the girls. We believe the administration told the girls to do the job as they were dalits,” said S Nandagopal, district secretary of CPM’s Theendamai Olippu Munnani.
Meanwhile, a revenue department official flayed the incident. “It is wrong to employ the inmates to do menial jobs. But some organisations are trying to exaggerate the issue,” he said.
