Transgenders offer prayers in city

Guwahati: The transgender community of the northeast celebrated Saraswati puja for the first time in Assam on Monday, breaking the barriers of societal norms.
Transgenders from various parts of the northeast came together and celebrated Saraswati Puja in Hatigaon, Guwahati. Some had travelled from Manipur and Mizoram to attend the festivities. The puja was organised by a human rights organisation — ‘Snehbandhan-Bond of Love’.
“Our main agenda is to bring transgenders to the mainstream. Our fellow sisters wants to wear mekhela chador and celebrate a puja with the rest of the community. That is why we have organised this celebration,” Ajan Akash Baruah, a member of the community, told TOI.
