Transgender arts fest from today
Thiruvananthapuram: The first edition of transgender arts festival ‘Varnapakitu-2019’ will begin at Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Chalai, on Friday. Minister for health and social justice K K Shylaja will inaugurate the fest, which is a first of its kind initiative in the country.
The two-day fest will begin with a procession from Karamana tax tower to the festival venue on Friday at 2pm. Around 190 contestants will take part in the fest.
The government has already sanctioned Rs 35 lakh for making the preparations for the festival. The festival includes as many as 20 competition items, similar to the school and university youth festivals, that includes competitions in Bharatanatyam, Kuchippudi, Mohiniyattam, folk dance, group dance, Thiruvathira, Oppana, semi- classical music, light music, elocution, mono act, poetry recital, mimicry, poetry writing, story writing, painting, drama, patriotic songs, folk songs and essay writing.
Varnappakittu will honour the overall topper with Kala Ratna title and an ever-rolling trophy will be awarded to the topping district. However, it would not be an open-to-all festival for the transgender community but would be limited to those who have been recognized by the social justice department.
The minimum age limit has been prescribed as 18 years to take part in the festival, and a preliminary screening would be conducted at the district-level before certifying them eligible to take part in the state-level festival. All the expenses, including the expense for accommodation as well as food, of those participating in the festival will be borne by the government.
