‘Three Fingers Severed’: Dalit Student Brutally Attacked On Way To Exam Centre.
The victim’s family alleged that the attack was sparked by a kabaddi match, where the victim’s team, comprising players from a Scheduled Caste community, defeated a team of higher-caste players, leading to a grudge that ultimately resulted in the violent assault.
In a tragic incident, a Class 11 student from a Scheduled Caste community in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district suffered a gruesome attack while on his way to an exam, resulting in the severing of three fingers, with his family claiming the assault was motivated by caste animosity.
According to the family of the victim, the attack stemmed from anger for the role he played in a kabaddi match. Notably, the victim’s team defeated the opponents in the match who belonged to higher castes.
Meanwhile the police are also exploring an alternative motive, investigating whether the attack was related to an alleged romantic relationship between the student and a girl from a higher caste.
One of the senior police officers who’s investigating the matter said that initially the father of the victim filed a complaint citing the kabaddi match as the motive for the attack. But a preliminary investigation also suggests that the violence may have stemmed from the student’s purported relationship with the sister of one of the boys who have been detained in the case belonging to the Thevar community.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the attack occurred in broad daylight while the victim was travelling on a bus. The three minors allegedly stopped the bus, dragged the boy out, and attacked him, severing three fingers on his left hand.
When the student’s father attempted to intervene, he was also assaulted, sustaining head injuries among others. The attackers escaped as passersby rushed to assist the victims.
The victim was first admitted to Srivaikundam Government Hospital and later moved to Tirunelveli Government Hospital where doctors performed surgery in an attempt to reattach the severed fingers.
The incident has caused outrage, with the student’s family and local activists calling for justice.
