Tamil Nadu Congress condemns Rahul Gandhi’s arrest, demands removal of CEC

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on Thursday held a protest in Chennai condemning the arrest of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and INDIA bloc MPs for organising an agitation demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Congress said INDIA bloc would organise protest meetings across Tamil Nadu on Oct 13 and 14 against the CEC. At the protest on Anna Salai in Chennai, TNCC functionaries raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, accusing BJP-led Union govt of using force to suppress the Opposition. Congress functionaries burnt an effigy and posters carrying images of Modi, Shah and Kumar, causing temporary traffic congestion in the area. The protesters demanded Kumar’s immediate removal, alleging the deletion of 13 crore names from the electoral rolls through SIR across the country was an “unlawful act.” Former TNCC president Thirunavukkarasar said Congress and its allies would continue their agitation until Kumar was removed or resigned. He said Opposition parties were considering measures like approaching Supreme Court seeking Kumar’s removal and moving a resolution in the parliament in this regard when the parliament meets. “Congress will not rest until Gyanesh Kumar is removed from office. Rahul Gandhi has made it clear that the agitation will continue until he is removed,” Thirunavukkarasar said. TN Congress legislature party leader Tharahai Cuthbert, senior leader Peter Alphonse and several other functionaries attended the demo, while ministers Rajesh Kumar and P Viswanathan did not turn up for the demo. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: Tamil Cinema Evolves, ‘Dorothy’ Marks Breakthrough for Transgender Representation

For a long time in Tamil cinema, transgender people were denied their humanity. From ‘Eeramana Rojave’ (1991) to ‘Darbar’ (2020), movies reduced them to tired tropes, letting them exist only as objects of pity and ridicule. They were called slurs such as ‘ajak’ and ‘ombodhu’ and used as plot devices to underline male superiority. When a transgender character enters the scene in a Tamil movie, the audience knows what to expect: They would clap loudly, speak in a sarcastic tone, often in innuendo. If the script is kind, they would bless the protagonist and walk away. If not, they would get humiliated. Karthik Subbaraj’s ‘Dorothy’, which released a couple of weeks ago, has disrupted this pattern by centering a transwoman’s self-discovery, and ends with her finding love. This sea change reflects the elevation that the trans community has achieved in society over the years. Kombai Anwar, an academic and filmmaker, says, “TN and Kerala govts have made efforts to improve the lives of marginalised communities. Parallelly, cinema has evolved to represent them better. First came dalit films by directors such as Vetrimaaran and Pa Ranjith, then we had movies such as ‘Habeebi’ (2026), which told the story of a small-town Muslim family. And now, we have ‘Dorothy’.” Director Subbaraj gives his leading woman grace and dignity in grief, hardship and threat to life. She comes out as trans to her family men who habitually kill off the women for refusing to toe the line, wears her identity proudly and walks her path fearlessly. “Sovereignty, the ability to make one’s own decisions, has been denied to trans characters in films. They have been kept in suffering, in a state of dependency on the mercy of others,” says Agni Pradeep, a transwoman writer. Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s ‘Super Deluxe’ (2019) fell into this trap. Vijay Sethupathi’s Shilpa returns home after gender-affirming surgery and is left to grapple with sexual violation, social stigma and anxiety as she attempts to reintegrate into the system. “Supreme Court has ruled that a transwoman can marry either a straight man or a transman. But the former is still not accepted by society,” says Jaya, general manager of Saho Daran, a city-based NGO for transpeople. This is echoed in the backlash that ‘Dorothy’ has received from a section of the audience that does not accept trans identity. Today, there are more than 500 active trans activists in Tamil Nadu, says Jaya. “You wouldn’t see as many in other states. They help members of the community access opportunities, get documentation and solve legal issues.” Though the Dravidian govts brought many schemes to improve the lives of transpeople, without acceptance from people in the education and employment sectors, they cannot “stay on the path to a better life”, Jaya says. “Even simple things like finding a house on rent is an uphill battle for transwomen, as not all people consider us ‘normal’. This is where positive representation in films matters,” she says. “We have come a long way since the infamous ‘Oororam Puliyamaram’ number in ‘Paruthiveeran’ (2007), where a group of transwomen dance to a folk song signalling sexual vulnerability among a group of drunken men,” says Kombai. The song became a pop culture reference for years thereafter. “We just want to be seen as regular people with regular lives. More than being portrayed as minstrels or ‘ardhanariswara’ or fortune tellers, we want to be accepted as people first,” says N Jency, the first transwoman in the state to get a PhD, and lecturer at Quaid-E-Millath Government College For Women, Chennai. One step forward, two steps back? How trans characters are shown in cinema Step back | Eeramana Rojave (1991) Hero and friends try to go to a movie with girls, but end up with transwomen. Slapstick comedy ensues Step forward | Kanchana (2011) A trans character is thrown out by her family, later, adopts a trans child and raises her to become a doctor Step back | I (2015) Osma, played by trans makeup artist Ojas Rajani, is infatuated with the hero, who humiliates her Step back | Darbar (2020) Rajinikanth’s character pays a group of trans women on a railway platform to sing while he beats up bad guys, reducing them to a tired stereotype Step forward | Neela Nira Sooriyan (2024) Trans filmmaker Samyuktha Vijayan plays a schoolteacher who identifies as a woman and transitions Dignity in a name In 2006, chief minister M Karunanidhi coined the terms ‘thirunangai’ (transwoman) and ‘thirunambi’ (transman), ‘thiru’- respectable; ‘nangai’ – woman and nambi – man. The intention was to remove stigma that came from words previously used to refer to them such as ‘aravani’. Today, the term is shortened to ‘thirunar’ to refer to a transperson of either orientation The shift in nomenclature led to a gradual social elevation that brought them ID cards, voting rights and access to govt schemes. In 2008, the DMK govt established the Transgender Persons Welfare Board Govt schemes: Subsidized loans for self-help groups; free sewing machines; 1 reserved seat in govt colleges; pension for transwomen over 40; ARAN shelter; special clinic at RGGGH & dist govt hospitals Courtesy : TOI Note: This news is originally published on https:/timesofindia.com/bha and is used purely for non-profit/non-commercial purposes, especially human rights

‘Age can’t outweigh crime’s gravity’: Court gives 24yo man life term for Dalit’s murder

Agra: An SC/ST court in Aligarh sentenced a 24-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering a Dalit labourer in Nov 2021, observing that while his young age and family circumstances merited consideration, they “could not outweigh the gravity of an offence” that had ended the victim’s life and left his family, including two minor children, struggling. While pronouncing the judgment, special judge Pratibha Saxena said, “Sentencing cannot be a mechanical exercise and has to balance the gravity and manner of the crime, its impact on the victim and society, against the accused’s age, family circumstances, criminal history and prospects of rehabilitation.” According to case records, Sher Singh, a labourer, left home for work on Nov 7, 2021, but did not return. The next morning, his family was informed that his body had been found at a plot near a railway line. His brother, Munna Lal, found a plastic noose around his neck, gutka and pouches stuffed in his mouth, and injury marks around his eyes. The court noted that the murder was “particularly grave” as the victim was not merely assaulted but beaten and dragged along a road before his body was dumped in an open plot. ADGC Chaman Prakash said the postmortem revealed multiple ante-mortem injuries, including a fractured skull bone, blood clots in the brain and fractured ribs. The medical opinion attributed the death to coma and shock caused by the injuries. The court record also cited CCTV footage as an important piece of documentary evidence. Seeking leniency, the defence submitted that Manish, a resident of Barola Jafrabad, was unmarried, poor and had only his mother to support. The prosecution opposed leniency, citing the brutality of the crime and the impact of Singh’s death on his children, including a daughter. Rahul Gandhi’s style has changed: In a closed room, he ordered party leaders to think outside the box; Congress is in for more surprises!

Political analysts believe that Rahul Gandhi’s political style has changed. He is surprising everyone on the political stage. Congress may take even more surprising steps in the future. Rahul Gandhi has advised party leaders to work on new ideas. New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi’s style has changed. Now he is surprising his opponents, surprising them on the political stage with unexpected moves. This is becoming visible on the streets of Delhi. This is the result of his strategy. He has also told party leaders to abandon old methods and do something that surprises everyone, attracts people’s attention, and becomes the topic of discussion during street protests. Rahul Gandhi gave the idea to the leaders in a closed-door meeting Some Congress leaders say that Rahul Gandhi conveyed this message in a closed-door meeting with party officials at the party headquarters on Monday. The very next day, he was seen climbing a police barricade, waving the tricolor, and sitting on a sit-in with his sister Priyanka Gandhi, which was followed by a protest from Janpath to Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. Some party officials are viewing Rahul Gandhi’s remarks not only in the context of the ongoing conflict between the government and the opposition, but also in the backdrop of the “Cockroach Janata Party” launching a second round of protests on the same issues. Previously, their protests over the paper leak issue had made headlines. Emphasis on Strategic Shift in Protest Methods While talking about strategic shifts in protest methods to make a greater impact on social media, Rahul Gandhi also cited an example at a meeting of AICC and PCC officials on October 5th. The meeting was called to plan the party’s upcoming campaigns/protests. He said that one method that had a truly shocking impact was the shirtless protest by a group of Youth Congress workers during the AI Summit at Bharat Mandapam in February last year. A party official quoted Gandhi at the meeting as saying, “That day, people only discussed how the Youth Congress carried out the protest, not the discussions at the AI conference.” Gen Z, Congress Focus on Youth Rahul Gandhi’s student engagement campaign, Chhatra Ki Goonj, features surprising elements. These include a ramp-like stage, Rahul Gandhi deliberately walking on it while speaking, organizers welcoming him with a shower of confetti, or colored pieces of paper, and a selfie session at the end. All of these are intended to resonate with and attract Gen Z audiences. Ideas for a unique and surprising protest According to sources, when the meeting discussed the MPs’ march in New Delhi and the Congress’s block-level demonstrations and village-level outreach programs, Rahul Gandhi believed that while these programs were fine, they were common and conventional. Rahul Gandhi stressed the need to think about ideas for different and surprising protests. Inspired by this, many enthusiastically supported Rahul Gandhi’s position. Some pointed out the powerful and surprising impact of Rahul Gandhi’s sit-in protest near the Prime Minister’s residence in July. Others emphasized how the sit-in by Rahul, Priyanka, and others at the Parliament Street police station in August went viral. Congress is about to take more surprising steps! Having understood their leader’s thinking and witnessed Rahul Gandhi climbing the barricades, Priyanka Gandhi jumping over the gate, and their sit-ins at Akashvani Bhavan on Tuesday and Janpath-Jantar Mantar on Wednesday, many Congress leaders are now expecting more surprise moves. This could pressure party officials to organize similar events. Reported by: CL Manoj•Edited by: Varun Shailesh Courtesy: Hindi News

Rupee may be undervalued, markets can be irrational: RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra

MUMBAI: Reserve Bank of India governor Sanjay Malhotra said the rupee was undervalued and the central bank would intervene to ensure orderly movement in the currency market even as it closed at 96.78 on Wednesday, down 36 paise from its previous close, after falling to a five-month low of 96.85 during the day. “By a number of estimates, including the real effective exchange rate, the rupee is not overvalued. It may be undervalued,” Malhotra said at a press conference after the MPC meeting. He was responding to a question on whether the rupee market was irrational. “Markets can be quite irrational in the short run. It’s only in the long run that they are able to find the right value,” he said. Rupee falls to 96.85 against Dollar hitting five-month low The governor said RBI would support the rupee’s orderly movement and help it find its “correct value”, while ensuring there was no excessive volatility. Malhotra also said a correction in the valuation of global AI stocks could redirect foreign capital to emerging markets such as India. He said a correction in AI stocks would not have a major negative impact on India and “if at all, there may be” a positive impact. Malhotra said that US tariffs and the absence of a trade deal would be a negative but could be offset by a trade deal with other countries. Despite a robust services trade surplus and strong net remittance receipts, the current account deficit widened in July because of a higher merchandise trade deficit, Malhotra said. The merchandise trade deficit rose to $58.7 billion in July and Aug from $55.1 billion in the same period a year earlier, mainly because of higher imports of electronic goods and crude oil. On external financing, Malhotra said net FDI had shown sustained improvement, with inflows rising to $13.8 billion in the first four months of the year from $9.6 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier. The increase was driven by higher gross inflows and a slowdown in the growth of outward FDI. “Robust gross FDI reflects the strong interest of global investors in India,” he said. FPI recorded net outflows of $10.3 billion during the period up to Oct 5. However, capital-flow measures announced in the June policy had supported inflows, he said. The balance of payments is consequently expected to record a healthy surplus this year. Malhotra also clarified that the new trade rules are aimed at improving ease of business and do not impose a reporting burden on individuals who get paid from overseas for software or other services. Nor does it apply to individuals paying for software or some subscriptions. Small exporters can use a self-declaration for bills up to Rs 10 lakh; and banks, not exporters or importers, handle reporting on the RBI’s system. The aim is to simplify trade procedures while improving RBI’s data on services exports, he said. Sensex snaps winning run After a two-session gain, sensex slid on Wednesday after RBI hiked interest rates for the first time in over three-and-a-half years. Sensex closed 429 points down at 72,639 points while on NSE, Nifty closed 173 points down at 22,603 points. On BSE, two indices-PSU banks and housing finance-each closed nearly 1% up while two other indices-bankex and financial services-closed barely changed. For quota baiters, a lesson from salons as Dalit youths challenge caste barriers

Youths in Puri district invoke the SC/ST Act after salons deny them haircuts, activists say education and reservation have helped them assert their rights In May, a group of determined Dalit youths from Jorakani Bhoi Sahi under Sauria grampanchayat in Puri district decided to assert themselves by demanding haircuts in salons that had traditionally served only the upper castes. The youths’ effort failed and set off a legal battle against the practice of untouchability, which continues even 76 years after India adopted a Constitution that guarantees equality, freedom, and justice for all. The incident stood out at a time when affluent sections have launched a campaign demanding dilution of caste-based reservation and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. There are six salons in nearby Ghoradia market run by barbers, largely OBCs. Traditionally, barbers have held the ceremonial lamp in front of wooden palanquins carrying idols from temples in processions through villages. Bhagyarathi Kandi, 26, a graduate who ekes out a living by giving tuitions, said all the shops denied them entry. “They (the barbers) said they serve the God in the temple and their caste would be diluted if they cut our hair. They said God would be annoyed too,” Bhagyarathi said. The Dalit youths filed an FIR at the Delang police station under the SC/ST Act and named the salon owners. People of the dominant Brahmin and Khandayat castes have supported the barbers’ stand to deny entry to Dalits, Bhagyarathi said. “The upper caste people met the police and demanded no action against the barbers. They said cutting the hair of Dalits means the barbers will no longer enjoy their social status and will not be able to render their services at religious events. We continue to face this untouchability,” Bhagyarathi said. Nandu Kandi, 30, said the fight would continue till the salons opened their doors to Dalits. “The boycott of Dalits is not restricted to salons. We are not allowed to attend any village festival. We celebrate our own festivities,” Nandu said, pointing to the Mangala Temple set up by Dalits. “The Brahmin priest does not come to our temple. One family from our caste is a Vaishnav Gosain (Dalit priest). He performs the rituals at the temple. On Holi or Diwali, we celebrate ourselves,” Nandu said. Rights activist Akshya Behera said the Dalits of Jorakani gathered courage to fight because many youths among them are now educated. “If we are able to fight the Savarnas (upper caste), it is because of reservation that helped us get educated. There are five/six graduates in the 25 Dalit families. They are aware of their rights and duties. The barbers, with the support of the Brahmins and Khandayats (a landed warrior caste), had never allowed entry to Dalits. But now this cannot be continued,” Behera said. He criticised the campaign to abolish caste-based reservation and the SC/ST Act. “The police are sitting on the FIR. They are not giving it any importance although the case has been filed under the SC/ST Act. The law is not enough. It must be implemented properly. Those who are demanding abolition of caste-based reservation and the scrapping of the SC/ST Act should visit Ghoradia and see how untouchability and atrocities are going on against Dalits,” Behera said.
