Trans teen accused of Hindu temple attack plot to receive gender-transition hormone shots in jail

The 19-year-old transgender teen accused of plotting a racist mass shooting at a Hindu temple near Chicago will reportedly continue receiving hormone injections for gender transition while in jail awaiting trial, after a judge ordered his detention without bail. Alexandros Paporakis, a transgender man from Palatine, Illinois, appeared in court on Wednesday, when the judge also addressed his medical treatment. Paporakis is being treated for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression and anxiety, in addition to receiving hormone injections, NBC Chicago reported. The ruling came days after Paporakis was arrested over an alleged plan to attack a Hindu temple in Aurora, a suburb of Chicago. Prosecutors say he told co-workers he “couldn’t wait to kill Indian people” and described himself as a white supremacist. ‘Couldn’t wait to kill Indians’ Paporakis, who worked as a cashier at Taco Bell, was arrested on Sunday after a co-worker alerted police to suspicious communications. The messages reportedly included an eight-page document outlining an alleged mass-shooting plan and photographs of a rifle, ammunition magazines and tactical equipment. Police said Paporakis drove to a large Hindu temple in Aurora at about 12.25 pm on Sunday, intending to open fire. Surveillance footage reportedly showed his car entering the parking lot before leaving a few minutes later.According to investigators, his rifle malfunctioned, preventing the alleged attack from proceeding as planned. Paporakis then returned to his home in Palatine, where he allegedly searched online for instructions on how to fix the jammed weapon and contacted a co-worker about his intention to carry out a mass shooting. The co-worker alerted police, who obtained a search warrant and arrested Paporakis before he could allegedly return to the temple. FBI Chicago acting special agent in charge Lucas Rothaar praised the informant, saying the public remained law enforcement’s “greatest asset” in disrupting acts of violence. “I want to praise and offer my personal, sincerest thanks to the individual who stepped forward,” Rothaar said at a news conference. A search of Paporakis’ home uncovered an AR-style rifle, a loaded magazine, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and tactical equipment, police said. Investigators also found an eight-page manifesto that allegedly expressed hatred towards Indians, Jews, Black people and other non-white communities, alongside white supremacist and Nazi imagery. Prosecutors said Paporakis had told co-workers he “couldn’t wait to kill Indian people”. In the manifesto, he allegedly described himself as “a sociopathic white supremacist Neo Nazi filled with hatred, fantasizing about mass murder nearly every day”. Temple boosts security after alleged plot The alleged plot has raised concern among Hindu Americans and Indian-origin communities. Democratic representative Raja Krishnamoorthi said he and his family were at the Aurora temple on Sunday, the same day authorities believe Paporakis intended to carry out the attack. “The threat of such violence shows how dangerous anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy have become,” Krishnamoorthi said, calling for threats to be taken seriously before anyone was killed. The temple said the safety of its devotees, employees and volunteers was its highest priority and announced additional security measures, including an increased armed-security presence. Paporakis faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches. A judge ordered him held without bail on Wednesday and issued an order addressing his healthcare in custody, including hormone injections for gender transition. He is due back in court on October 30. Sold RS seat to ‘Mumbai bizman’: Yogi targets Akhilesh for ‘ignoring backward, Dalit candidates’

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath’s remarks came in the context of SP nominating senior Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani to RS in the election this month. Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has accused the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) of selling a Rajya Sabha seat to a wealthy businessman while sidelining its “PDA” or “pichhda (backward), Dalit, alpsankhyak (minorities)” plank. Yogi’s remarks came in the context of Yadav nominating senior Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani to the Rajya Sabha in the election held earlier this month, where the SP won two seats unopposed. Nathwani, one of the two SP winners, is also considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. His father Parimal Nathwani is an Independent Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand. The latter had won the seat in April this year after defeating Congress candidate Pranav Jha. Addressing a teachers’ conference in Varanasi Wednesday, Yogi questioned the SP’s commitment to PDA, asking, “Those who kept raising slogans about PDA… where did that PDA go when it came to Rajya Sabha tickets?” “We have been saying from day one that PDA in the Samajwadi Party stands for ‘parivar development authority’ or, at best, ‘Paraya Dhan Apna’,” the chief minister said. Yogi said the SP leader fielded his uncle Ram Gopal Yadav from one of the seats it won, although he could have chosen a Yadav leader from Kashi, Ghazipur or Ballia for one seat. “For the second seat, they could have nominated a Dalit or someone else, or even a Muslim from their traditional vote bank. But they did not do so. Instead, they sold the seat to a wealthy businessman from Mumbai. Both ‘parivar development authority’ and ‘paraya dhan apna’ have been proved right,” he alleged. Yogi targets SP over recruitment row The chief minister also attacked the erstwhile SP government over alleged irregularities in recruitment, accusing it of compromising the future of young people. He referred to the appointment of Anil Yadav as chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission during the SP’s tenure in 2013—the appointment was set aside by the Allahabad High Court in 2015 amid questions over his selection—and claimed he was not qualified for the post. He further alleged that a candidate who had secured third division in high school, intermediate and graduation had topped the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission examinations under the previous government. “What kind of anarchy and hooliganism was this? The future of young people was being played with. Meanwhile, riots, unrest and mafia elements dominated the state,” Yogi alleged. SP’s Rajya Sabha wins The remarks come after 10 Rajya Sabha members from Uttar Pradesh were elected unopposed on October 9. The BJP secured eight seats, while the SP won two. The SP’s elected candidates were senior party leader and national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav and businessman Nathwani. Within a few days of filing nomination, Nathwani’s social media post praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi had triggered unease within the party, with some leaders questioning how they would defend the candidature amid the SP’s opposition to the BJP and Modi. Nathwani, a Gujarat-based businessman associated with the Reliance Group, posted a lengthy message on X (formerly Twitter) on 9 October, congratulating Modi on completing 25 years in public office. He also shared a video highlighting Modi’s political journey from Gujarat chief minister to Prime Minister. “Until the guilty are behind bars, the struggle will intensify”: AIISCA warns ahead of IIT Bombay’s internal report

IIT Bombay has updated its anti-discrimination guidelines, stating that asking classmates about their caste, admission category, or entrance exam rank is inappropriate. Mumbai—Following the death of Sahil Wakode, protests are intensifying from the IIT Bombay campus to Azad Maidan. Deepali Salve, Maharashtra General Secretary of the All India Independent Scheduled Castes Association (AIISCA) and Director of the SRC, issued a stern warning ahead of the release of the institute’s internal report. She stated that if Professor Suryanarayan Dulla is not permanently expelled from the institute, they will protest on campus and that Director Professor Shirish Kedare will be held responsible for whatever happens next. Meanwhile, Sahil’s parents have been on a hunger strike at Azad Maidan for several days, and AIISCA has called for a protest there on October 16. Salve said that it is better to choose the path of rebellion than to succumb to injustice. According to him, this fight for justice for Sahil Wakode is no longer just a case, but a declaration of standing against oppression. He said, “This struggle will intensify until the perpetrators are put behind bars.” Regarding IIT Bombay’s internal report, Salve said it was forthcoming and that he believed it would be in favor of Professor Dulla. Addressing the institute directly, he said that if Professor Dulla was not permanently expelled, they would storm the campus and hold Director Kedare responsible for “whatever happens.” Sahil’s parents have been on a hunger strike at Azad Maidan in Mumbai for several days. A six-member delegation was allowed to meet with Kedare regarding the death of student Sahil Wakode and the allegations against Dulla. However, activists said the director did not provide any clarity regarding the ongoing investigation nor did he assure immediate action against the professor. Protest organizers alleged that more than 30 protesters were detained, assaulted, and taken to the Powai police station before being released. They warned that they would return to campus if Dula was not suspended. The protesters alleged that students were dragged onto the road and excessive force was used. AIISCA has appealed to all civil society organizations, Ambedkarites, community members, political parties, activists, and justice-minded citizens to show solidarity with them. The protest will take place at Azad Maidan on October 16th, starting at 10:30 am. Its slogan is “Justice for Sahil.” The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) protested the incident that occurred on October 14th. The group also alleged that the administration opened the gate for the police and kept it closed for others. According to it, the administration has taken no action toward the students who have been on strike for 27 days, and has done nothing to conduct a fair investigation into the Sahil case, instead spreading “fake news” and promoting a “media trial.” The APPSC condemned the “coalition” between the administration and the Powai police and demanded that all voices be heard and that there be dialogue with the protesting students. New Guidelines: What the Institute Said According to a Hindustan Times report, IIT Bombay has updated its anti-discrimination guidelines, stating that asking classmates about their caste, admission category, or entrance exam rank is inappropriate. An email sent by the Dean of Student Affairs’ office stated that asking about caste, admission category, or entrance exam rank, even out of curiosity, can create prejudice and negatively impact students. The institute urged students, faculty, and staff to avoid conversations that reveal someone’s caste or background and to build friendships based on shared interests. According to the email, while the question may seem innocent to the person asking it and may be motivated by mere curiosity, such a question can often have an adverse impact on another student. Sharing abusive, hateful, casteist, or gender-biased messages, as well as content that depicts prejudice based on religion or sexual orientation, is also prohibited. The institute reiterated its commitment to implementing the reservation policy “in letter and spirit” and warned of strict punishment for violations. Statements Recorded So Far in the Police Investigation According to the Hindustan Times, the Crime Branch has so far recorded statements from approximately 70 people, including Director Kedare, Professor Dulla, several students, and the deceased’s girlfriend and classmate. Police have gained access to the deceased’s phone, tablet, and laptop, but the iPhone has not yet been unlocked and is in the forensic laboratory in Kalina. Police have also sought documents from the institute, such as mark sheets, written complaints, and, if any, apologies. Prof. Dulla is named in a police FIR alleging abetment to suicide on the grounds of caste discrimination, and has been sent on leave to allow a fair investigation. The issue of caste discrimination and mental harassment of a Dalit M.Ed. student at CSJMU heats up, with Bhim Army and student organizations staging a violent protest.

The Bhim Army Students Federation has launched a protest against the caste discrimination and mental harassment of an M.Ed. student at Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, leveling serious allegations against the administration and police. Lucknow: Student organizations, led by the Bhim Army Students Federation (BASF), have launched a protest to secure justice for Prema Devi, a Dalit M.Ed. (session 2024-26) student studying in the Department of Teacher Education at Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University (CSJMU), Kanpur, with the support of the AISA student organization. As soon as the student organizations joined the protest, the police administration turned the entire campus into a cantonment, but the Bhim Army Students Federation remained firm on its demands and launched a vigorous protest. The Bhim Army Students Federation (BASF) submitted a detailed memorandum to the Vice Chancellor of the University, demanding strict action against the accused teachers. Student leaders accused the university administration of suppressing the ongoing cases of caste-based harassment and discrimination on campus. During the memorandum, Hemant Vidyarthi, District Coordinator of the Bhim Army Students Federation, stated that this is not the first case at the university, and that many previous instances of caste-based discrimination and administrative neglect have been reported against researchers and students. He alleged that whenever students raise their voices for their rights, the administration, instead of showing sensitivity, attempts to hush up the cases. During the protest, student leader Sachin Chandra stated that the Vice Chancellor is showing no urgency in providing justice to Prema Devi. Meanwhile, Abhishek Comrade, in his address, stated that casteism is rampant in the university and that if the victim does not receive justice, this place will be turned into Jantar Mantar. The organization has issued a strong warning that if the victim, Prema Devi, does not receive immediate justice, this fight will be escalated into a massive public movement from the university campus to the entire state. According to the complaint submitted by the victim, she was selected fourth in her class in the entrance examination, yet the Head of Department, Dr. Tanuja Bhatt, publicly discredited her by claiming that she had received admission through pleading. The student also alleges that teacher Dr. Vimal Singh targeted her with abusive language in class. The complaint further states that during the farewell ceremony, she was publicly humiliated, caste-based remarks were made that were derogatory to her dignity, and threats were made to ruin her future. The student alleges that when she protested, she was subjected to biased evaluation of answer sheets and undue pressure was exerted to enroll in mid-term examinations, contrary to the rules. Despite a previous complaint to the then Head of Department, Dr. Rashmi Gore, and the internal committee, an attempt was made to suppress the matter instead of conducting an impartial investigation. The memorandum submitted to the Vice Chancellor places a number of key demands. The first demand is that, given the sensitivity of the matter, an immediate administrative inquiry be initiated against the Head of Department, Dr. Tanuja Bhatt, and if the allegations are proven, legal action should be taken under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The second demand states that, for a fair and transparent investigation, the accused teachers be removed from their current positions and an independent inquiry committee be formed, with no direct or indirect interest in the matter. The third demand calls for an independent review of the student’s answer sheets, internal marks, and evaluation records by impartial experts. The fourth and final demand calls for ensuring that any form of retaliatory action or psychological pressure against the student is completely prevented during the investigation process and that her legitimate academic rights are fully protected. Sachin Chandra, Abhishek, Kartik, Swarnkant, Rajesh, Amarkant, Riya, Neelam, Asha, Savita, and Govind, along with many other students, were present during the demonstration and memorandum program. ‘Don’t try to bulldoze another Constitutional Amendment Bill’: Kharge writes to PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the delay in proroguing the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which ended in August, describing the situation as “unprecedented”. Urging PM Modi not to “bulldoze” another “far-reaching” Constitutional Amendment Bill, Kharge reiterated his demand for an all-party meeting to discuss the government’s proposals in detail before they are finalised for consideration in Parliament. “It has already been 64 days since the Monsoon Session of Parliament was adjourned sine die on August 13 and both Houses of Parliament are yet to be prorogued. This scenario is unprecedented,” Kharge said in his letter, which Congress MP Jairam Ramesh shared on X. — Jairam_Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) The Rajya Sabha leader of opposition recalled writing to the prime minister on April 11, seeking an all-party meeting before the government introduced the Constitutional Amendment Bill on Delimitation, which subsequently failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. “You may kindly recall that I had written to you on April 11 to convene an all-party meeting before bringing any Constitutional Amendment Bill on Delimitation. You did not do so. Thereafter, you made the bills public on the late evening of April 14 and convened a special session on April 16. The Constitutional Amendment Bill on Delimitation failed to muster the necessary two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha on April 17 by a decisive margin,” Kharge said. “Thereafter, on July 16 and August 27, I wrote to you again, reiterating our request for an all-party meeting. I am now making this request for the fourth time. All political parties must be given sufficient time to deliberate among themselves, with each other and with all other stakeholders. Please do not once again try to bulldoze a far-reaching Constitutional Amendment Bill through Parliament, as you attempted earlier, only for it to meet its well-deserved fate,” he added. The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on July 20 and concluded as scheduled on August 13. However, proceedings were repeatedly disrupted over issues including the alleged theft of offerings at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the NEET paper leak and allegations of police excesses against NEET protesters in Delhi. ‘Police can break bones, not satyagraha’: Rahul Gandhi alleges Delhi Police refused to file FIR over assault on student protesters

NEW DELHI: Leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that Delhi Police was refusing to register an FIR over the alleged assault on student protesters, claiming that two young women, Athira from Kerala and Ritu from Rajasthan, were among those beaten by the police. In a post on X, the Congress leader said he had spoken to Kerala home minister Ramesh Chennithala and Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Govind Singh Dotasra over the incident. He added that a Zero FIR had already been registered in Kerala and said the Congress would pursue legal action against the officers concerned. “Two young women, Athira from Kerala and Ritu from Rajasthan, along with many others, were beaten by Delhi Police. I have spoken to Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and Rajasthan PCC President Govind Singh Dotasra. A Zero FIR has already been registered in Kerala. We will pursue every legal route against the officers responsible, in Kerala, in Rajasthan and in the courts,” Rahul wrote. — RahulGandhi (@RahulGandhi) “Brutality by Amit Shah’s Delhi Police will not go unchecked,” he added. Rahul invokes Dharasana Satyagraha Referring to the 1930 Dharasana Satyagraha, the Raebareli MP recalled how Sarojini Naidu had led unarmed satyagrahis into police lathis without retaliating. “Police can break bones. They cannot break a satyagraha,” he said. Former Congress president also described India’s youth, particularly young women, as fearless, determined and united in their efforts to defend democracy, adding that he stood with them. “India’s youth, especially young women, are fearless, determined and united. They are standing up for our democracy, and I stand with them,” he wrote. Earlier on Wednesday, Rahul had accused Delhi Police of assaulting student protesters and warned the Centre against suppressing their voices amid demonstrations against the revision of electoral rolls. Addressing protesters in Delhi, he said the demonstration represented a collective voice that transcended religion, caste and gender. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah not to stand against the protesters. “As I said in my press conference, this is India. Amit Shah ji, take a good look at this. There is no Hindu here, no Muslim, no one of any specific caste; there is no woman, no man. There is one voice, one protest. It is the voice of India, and you are standing against this voice—the Prime Minister is standing against this voice. I suggest to you: do not stand against this voice. No one can stand against this voice,” Rahul had said. He also urged student protesters to document alleged police misconduct, saying the evidence would be used to seek accountability. Police detain activists ahead of Tiranga rally Meanwhile, Delhi Police detained Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leader Abhijeet Dipke and All India Students’ Association (AISA) chief Neha Bohra on Friday as they were heading to Connaught Place for the proposed ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest. Dipke was detained while leaving his residence in Jhandewalan, while Bohra was picked up in Mandi House. Police informed Dipke that he was being placed under preventive detention, citing restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the Connaught Place area. He was also served notices referring to the restrictions and a previous undertaking to maintain public peace. Police had warned that the proposed rally could violate the restrictions if held without permission from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). Dipke was told that waving the national flag was not unlawful, but holding an unpermitted march and gathering a crowd could invite legal action. The detentions came amid heightened security arrangements in the national capital ahead of the proposed protest. Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar had earlier reviewed security arrangements with senior officers, while traffic police issued an advisory warning of possible disruption around Connaught Place. Maha to build separate toilets for transgenders across all ST bus stands

Nagpur: For a transgender person a toilet at a state transport bus stand, there was no toilet meant for them. The state govt has now sanctioned Rs 9.77 crore to build separate toilets for transgender persons at ST bus stands across Maharashtra. In a govt resolution (GR) issued on Wednesday, the transport department gave administrative approval for a combined estimate of Rs 9,76,63,195 covering 31 ST divisions. The GR says the absence of a separate toilet at bus stands forces transgender persons to face social and physical difficulties and causes them considerable distress. Vidarbha’s nine ST divisions together get about Rs 2.71 crore. Amravati has the largest share in the region at Rs 50.74 lakh, followed by Nagpur at Rs 48.40 lakh, Yavatmal at Rs 36 lakh, Buldhana at Rs 33.83 lakh and Bhandara at Rs 31.46 lakh. Chandrapur gets Rs 20.43 lakh, Akola Rs 19.48 lakh, Wardha Rs 16.94 lakh and Gadchiroli Rs 13.75 lakh. Across the state, Kolhapur division gets the highest allocation at Rs 55.20 lakh and Latur the lowest at Rs 9.60 lakh. The proposal came from the ST corporation’s vice-chairperson and managing director, after the minister of state for urban development, transport and social justice, among other portfolios, directed that the transport department give approval without delay. The cost will be met from the social justice department’s funds for setting up a welfare board for transgender persons and protecting their rights. The sanction comes with conditions. Layout and detailed plans must be approved by architects before work begins, a detailed estimate must be prepared, and the executive engineer concerned must give technical sanction. The GR does not say how many toilets will be built or at which bus stands, as the annexure lists only division-wise lump sums.
