SC Commission seeks report on Dalit woman’s assault at Siwan police station

Taking cognisance of an alleged assault on a Dalit woman inside Siwan police station, Haryana State Commission for Scheduled Castes chairperson Ravinder Singh Baliala has directed the ADGP, Karnal Range, to submit a fact-finding report within a week. During a public hearing at the Mini-Secretariat in Kaithal, Baliala also asked the Director General Health Services to provide the medical report of the victim. The report must be prepared by a special medical board that includes a doctor from PGI Rohtak. He further instructed that provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act be added to the FIR already registered on the woman’s complaint. The matter came up during the Commission’s hearing into various caste-related grievances. The session began with a complaint from the family of a missing girl, which is reportedly linked to the same case. Several participants then alleged that a Dalit woman was brutally mistreated while in custody at the Siwan police station. Following this, the chairperson summoned senior district officials, including the doctor at Siwan civil hospital who allegedly refused to treat the woman initially, to appear before the Commission on July 15. The district hospital has also been directed to submit the complete medical treatment records of the victim. Superintendent of Police Astha Modi informed the Commission that two police personnel were immediately shifted to police lines after the complaint was received. She said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Karnal had been constituted to investigate the matter and action would be taken based on the findings. Emphasising the seriousness of the incident, Baliala said: “Officers must take complaints from the Scheduled Caste community seriously. Justice must be delivered swiftly and fairly. This Commission was established under the 2018 Act with powers equivalent to the National SC Commission and we will use every one of them to protect the rights and dignity of the marginalised.” He added that the Commission’s approach ensures impartiality. “Even the accused are given an opportunity to present their side to ensure that no innocent person is wrongfully implicated,” he said. Baliala appreciated the Kaithal district administration’s cooperation in addressing caste-related issues, stating, “The district’s response to complaints from the Scheduled Caste community has been largely satisfactory.” During the hearing, the Commission reviewed 11 listed cases and took note of around 15 fresh complaints submitted directly during the session. Directions were issued on the spot to police and administrative officials for immediate follow-up. 10 Dalit professors resign from Bangalore University on charges of casteism

10 Dalit professors working in the university have resigned from their administrative posts together. They have taken this step against the caste discrimination and neglect of rights in the institute. Bangalore. Bangalore University is once again in controversy. 10 Dalit professors working in the university have resigned from their administrative posts together. They have taken this step against the caste discrimination and neglect of rights in the institute. The teachers who resigned allege that despite serving for years, they were retained on temporary posts of ‘in-charge’, due to which they neither got the status of a permanent post, nor the benefit of leaves and other administrative facilities. These professors have written a letter to the Vice Chancellor and clarified that this is not just administrative dissatisfaction, but the result of caste-based discrimination. They have written that for a long time, teachers coming from the Dalit community in the university are being deliberately denied promotions and permanent posts. Also, basic facilities like Earned Leave (EL) have been taken away from them, which have been available to teachers from other communities. The professors say that when new chairs or posts are vacant in the institute, candidates from upper castes are given preference, while Dalit professors keep working in the name of ‘in-charge’. This not only exploits them, but also hurts their dignity. This incident has come to light when cases of caste discrimination are being raised repeatedly in universities and higher education institutions across the country. After cases like Dr. Ashok Kumar (DU) and Dr. Ravi Verma (Andhra Pradesh), this incident of Bangalore University underlines that institutional injustice with the Dalit community in the field of higher education is a serious reality. Now the question is whether the university administration will ignore this protest considering it only an “emotional reaction” or will it change the policy by implementing the demands of these professors? The professors who resigned have warned that if they are not given permanent posts and their rights within a week, they will completely distance themselves from administrative responsibilities. This crisis of Bangalore University is becoming a symbol of the plight of those Dalit teachers not only in Karnataka but across the country, who are still not getting equal status despite their qualifications. VCK to elevate non-Dalit MLAs in key party roles as 2026 TN Assembly polls near

Chennai, (IANS) In a significant move aimed at broadening its social base and countering perceptions of being a Dalit-only party, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is set to elevate two of its non-Dalit legislators to key organisational posts. Nagapattinam MLA Aloor J. Mohamed Shanavas, a Muslim and current deputy general secretary, is expected to be promoted as one of the party’s general secretaries. This move will fill a long-vacant slot specifically reserved for a non-Dalit in accordance with the party’s by-laws. The post has remained unoccupied since former general secretary Kalaikottu Udhayam left the VCK to join the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK). Thiruporur MLA S.S. Balaji, a non-Dalit, is likely to be appointed as the party’s treasurer. The position has been lying vacant since the demise of former treasurer Yusuf. Both appointments are expected to be announced ahead of the party’s internal elections, signalling a deliberate effort by the leadership to promote inclusivity and representation of diverse social groups. Party insiders view these elevations as a strategic step to enhance VCK’s appeal among religious minorities, Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and other non-Dalit communities. The leadership believes that widening the social representation at the top will strengthen the party’s political positioning in Tamil Nadu’s complex caste and community matrix. These changes are part of a broader internal restructuring exercise being undertaken by the VCK. The party has expanded its district units from 144 to 234, aligning them with the number of Assembly constituencies in the state. To oversee this expansion, the party has appointed 83 senior functionaries tasked with forming new district-level teams. Each district unit will now comprise a district secretary, four deputy secretaries (including one woman and one non-Dalit), two executive members, and four additional office-bearers. The party has also mandated that 10 per cent of district secretary posts be reserved for women and non-Dalits, while 25 per cent will be allocated to youth under the age of 35. With four MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the VCK’s latest organisational shake-up is being seen as a clear attempt to position itself as a more inclusive and politically versatile force ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Dalit wedding procession attacked by Muslims: Violent brawl breaks out over DJ near Mosque in Deoband; Several injured

A wedding procession in Saharanpur’s Deoband turned violent after an argument over DJ music near a mosque led to a clash between Dalit and Muslim youth. The incident left several injured and the police have arrested five individuals What began as a joyous wedding celebration in Saharanpur’s Deoband spiralled into chaos and violence when a dispute over the volume of DJ music led to a fierce clash between members of the Scheduled Caste (Dalit) community and the local Muslim community. The brawl, which broke out in Garhi Isarpur village under Deoband police station limits, left at least four people injured and has since sparked outrage as visuals of the street fight went viral on social media. The incident took place on the evening of July 6, when a Dalit wedding procession from Sadhauranpur village was making its way through Garhi Isarpur. The procession was accompanied by DJ music, with the wedding guests dancing in high spirits. As the procession passed by a local mosque, some Muslim youths reportedly asked the wedding party to lower the music volume, citing the ongoing namaz. What started as a verbal disagreement over the music quickly escalated into physical violence. Tempers flared, and within moments, both sides armed themselves with sticks, batons, and even belts. A violent clash erupted in the middle of the road, with blows being exchanged openly. Visuals from the incident, now circulating widely on social media, show young men chasing and attacking each other in the streets as chaos unfolded. Four individuals sustained injuries during the brawl, prompting the immediate intervention of the local police. Upon receiving the information, a police team from Deoband arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control. The injured were promptly taken to a government hospital for medical treatment. A case was registered based on the complaint of the injured parties, and CCTV footage of the incident was reviewed as part of the investigation. Speaking to the media, the Deoband police confirmed that five individuals from the Muslim community have been arrested so far in connection with the violence. The accused have been identified as Mohammad Abuzar, Asjad, Israr, Sadiq, Fahim, and others. They were produced before the court, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the clash. The incident has once again brought to light the underlying social tensions in the Saharanpur district, which has witnessed similar disputes in the past. A comparable episode took place some time ago in Chhachhauli village under Nanauta police station, where members of the Muslim community objected to a Dalit wedding procession during the time of Iftar, leading to unrest and confrontation. Police officials emphasised that strict action will be taken against all individuals found guilty of inciting or participating in the violence. “The law will take its course. No one has the right to take matters into their own hands and disturb public order,” a senior police officer stated. The police have assured that further arrests will be made based on the evidence and that surveillance footage is being thoroughly examined to identify all participants in the clash. Both sides have been advised to cooperate with the investigation. The incident has sparked a debate on social media, with many expressing concern over rising intolerance and the misuse of religious or caste identity to justify violence Courtesy : Organiser Note: This news is originally published on https:/organiser.com/ and is for use by the non-military/non-commercial community, especially those in the human rights sector.

Rising atrocities against tribals & Dalits in Bihar a grave concern: CM

Ranchi: A day after five members of a family were burnt alive in election-bound Bihar, Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, who is looking after his ailing father Shibu Soren at a Delhi hospital, said he cannot keep quiet when Dalits and poor people are tortured. In the Bihar incident, a mob lynched five members of a tribal family and later burnt them alive in Purnia late on Sunday night charging them with witchcraft. Taking to X, Hemant appealed to his Bihar counterpart, Nitish Kumar, to stake strict action against the perpetrators. “I urge the Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri @NitishKumar ji, to issue directives to take appropriate steps to swiftly apprehend the culprits and ensure they receive the most stringent punishment. The continuously increasing atrocities on tribals/Dalits in Bihar are a matter of grave concern.” In Ranchi, Hemant’s party JMM, too, expressed shock and grave concern over the situation. Mounting pressure on BJP, which is part of alliance govt led by Nitish Kumar (JDU) in Bihar, JMM’s general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharjee said, “Whatever happened in Purnia is part of the spree of attacks on the poor, tribals, marginalised and minorities in places wherever BJP is directly or partly in power. Bihar is the latest example.” He added that BJP, which is trying to allegedly throw many out of Bihar’s voters’ list through the ECI’s special amendment drive ahead of the election in the neighbouring state, is also using such violent tactics to silence voters, who are against the saffron party. The JMMM leader also questioned the role of the police in the entire episode. “The harrowing incident that happened with the family lasted for several hours — from beating them at one place to burning the five at different place and dumping bodies at another location. What was Bihar police doing all these while?” he said.
