Student body demands rollback of RUSA grant to Jai Hind, Mithibai
The Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) has demanded a rollback of the proposed central grant of Rs 5 crore to minority colleges Jai Hindi and Mithibai on the grounds that they do not conform to the scheme’s objectives of creating opportunities for marginalised students from SC and ST communities.
“These colleges do not have a reservation policy for SC/ST. Yet RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) selected them for the grant,” said Santosh Gangurde, vice president, MNVS.
The Bombay High Court, in an October 2017 order, had exempted minority colleges from the reservation policy. However, RUSA states that institutions have to “improve equity in higher education by providing adequate opportunities of higher education to SC/STs and socially and educationally backward classes; promote inclusion of women, minorities, and differently abled persons.”
