SC girl murder: Relatives protest demanding justice
Tirunelveli: Relatives of the dalit girl who was murdered by a teen in Tirunelveli went on a protest for more than one hour on Tuesday demanding justice for the victim.
The protesters from Thirupanikarisalkulam marched to the junction in Tirunelveli – Cheranmahadevi Road and sat in protest. They demanded proper compensation to the girl’s family and government job for one of the family members. They also demanded a speedy trial in the case.
As the traffic was getting affected, police and revenue officials negotiated with them and assured to fulfill their demands by forwarding them to the state government. Based on their assurance, they withdrew the protest.
M Santhiya, 18, who was working in a fancy store was killed by a teen from the nadar community after she refused to continue the affair citing caste differences. He was working in a jewellery store near the fancy shop where the girl worked and befriended her. She discontinued the affair two months ago realizing that it wouldn’t work out due to caste differences.However, the boy was adamant and attempted suicide in August. He moved out of the city to Chennai after his friends persuaded him to forget the affair. A week ago, he returned to Tirunelveli after learning that Santhiya is going to get married to one of her relatives. He contacted Santhiya’s sister three days ago and warned her of dire consequences.
Under these circumstances, he murdered the girl by slitting her throat when she went to the shop’s warehouse to pick up some materials. The Tirunelveli Town police arrested the teen on Monday night and produced him before the Juvenile Justice Board and lodged in borstal house.
