Rajasthan University gets its first president from SC category
JAIPUR: Third time in a row, an independent candidates has won the post of president in the Rajasthan University (RU) student union election. Three out of four important posts in the university have been won by independent candidates.
Vinod Jakhar, the new president of RU, had contested independently after becoming a rebel from National Students Union of India (NSUI). He is also the first president of Scheduled Caste category in the history of Rajasthan University. Other than this, Ram Singh Samota, Meenal Sharma, Renu Chaudhary and Aditya Pratap have won the seats of research representative, joint secretary, vice-president and general secretary, respectively.
Vinod Jakhar, while talking to TOI, said that his win was an answer to the politics of power and money. “There has been a monopoly of these big political parties but students have proven the fact that politics can be done on principles. Youth of the state is angry with the BJP government who has done nothing other than giving false promises and have given them right answer for this,” said Vinod.
On the victory of Vinod, former general secretary of RU in 2010, Narsee Kirad said, “The results are in his favour due to his hard work in the Rajasthan University. Another important reason was that votes of SC/ST community were not divided because none of the candidates of these castes contested the elections. There had been a kind of monopoly of Jat candidates in theUniversity and other communities in the University decided to vote for Jakhar to go against the trend.”
Vinod Jakhar got 4,321 votes in the election beating second highest scorer Rajpal Chaudhary of ABVP who got 2,467 votes.
For the post of vice-president as well an independent candidate Renu Chaudhary and for general secretary, Aditya Pratap Singh won. ABVP was able to get one seat of joint secretary through Meenal Sharma. These elections have given an indication and strength to independent candidates to win without any political backing.
There were about 22,000 voters in the Rajasthan University and its constituent colleges out of which 11,516 voters have cast their votes. This year, including all the posts, 2,430 votes were in NOTA. NSUI candidate Ranveer Singhania was on third position with 1,789 votes, Dushyant Singh Chundawat got 1351 votes, Mahesh Samota got 1214 and Vinod Kumawat got 66 votes.
Student politics in Rajasthan University is said to be influenced by caste politics and almost all the candidates belong to some political family. Surprisingly, Vinod Jakhar is a candidate without any political family background as his contemporaries are.
