Quota For Patidars Okay, But Not From OBC Category: Athawale
Even as Patidars are demanding reservation and bringing the issue on the frontburner ahead of Assembly polls, Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Ramdas Athawale said on Saturday that he was against inclusion of Patidars in the OBC category. “They cannot be included among OBC, but a different category can be made for them to give them reservation,” he said.
Athawale said the Patidar issue is similar t
o the one with Marathas in Maharashtra and Rajput in Haryana. Those having annual income of less than Rs 8 lakh should get reservation.
Talking about atrocities on Dalits in Gujarat, the Union minister said he will talk to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani about the matter. “The situation in Gujarat is better than other states,” he said. Casteism exists in the minds of people.
Interacting with mediapersons here on Saturday, he said, “Atrocities are committed on Dalits across the country even today and casteism still exists. If a Dalit wears good clothes, most people do not like it. If a Dalit rides a horse on his wedding day, others don’t like it. The same is the case if a Dalit buys property. But the attempt of our government is to change this situation.”
