Protesters at Dalit Prerna Sthal tonsure their heads
Noida: Protesting farmers at the Dalit Prerna Sthal got their heads shaved on Saturday despite a brief spell of rain. Around 200 farmers led by the BKU-Lokshakti have been agitating at the site against the farm bills for the past 17 days.
“We had taken out a shav-yatra (funeral procession) of the three farm bills. As per the Hindu traditions, a day after the cremation, family members shave their heads and hence, we got our heads tonsured. Now, a hawan will be performed and on December 23, we will organise a bhog where all are invited,” said one of the outfit leaders.
After the tonsuring ceremony, over 100 members of the BKU-Lokshakti marched from the protest site to the Kailash Hospital, owned by Gautam Budh Nagar MP Dr Mahesh Sharma.
The members gathered at the hospital and raised slogans against the Centre after which the MP spoke to them.
During the protest, one of the members, identified as Vir Yadav, threatened to kill himself if the bills were not repealed. The farmers said they will stay put at the protest site despite the likelihood of a cold wave in coming days.
