Nine arrested on charges of assaulting a Dalit woman at Kallukunta village in Kurnool district.
TIRUPATI: Peddakaduburu police on Saturday arrested nine persons including several women in connection with the humiliation and assault on a Dalit woman reported at Kallukunta village in Peddakaduburu mandal in Kurnool district late on Thursday night.
It may be recalled that Govindamma (55), who came to Kallukunta village on some personal work, was gheraoed by a group of persons belonging to another caste, tied up to an electric pole and thrashed severely. She was lateron rescued and admitted to the govt hospital at Yemmiganur after her younger son Raju reached out to the Peddakaduburu police.
The reason for the humiliation and assault was that Govindamma’s elder son Sappagu Eeranna married one Chakali Naga Lakshmi, against the wishes of the girl’s parents, who belonged to another caste.
While Eeranna and Naga Lakshmi settled down in Bengaluru since February this year, Govindamma and her younger son were living at Yemmiganur town after being forcibly evicted out of the village by the locals.
However, when Govindamma stepped into Kallukunta village after several months, Naga Lakshmi’s family members, who learnt about her presence at the village, cornered her after locking up her son at a house locally, tied her up to an electric pole near one Chakali Nagaraju’s house and severely thrashed her.
After the victim’s son Raju, managed to inform the Peddakaduburu police about the incident, the local police reached Kallukunta village and rescued Govindamma with great difficulty.
While she was admitted to the govt hospital at Yemmiganur later, based on her complaint, police booked cases under the SC-ST atrocities Act and under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Peddakaduburu police arrested nine persons involved in the incident on Saturday and they were identified as Chakali Nagaraju, Chakali Hussaini, Chakali Ramudu, Chakali Bhimaraju, Chakali Bhulakshmi, Chakali Narasamma, Chalaki Lakshmi, Chakali Pedda Rangamma and Chakali Gundamma.
Police said all the accused were produced before the local courts and were subsequently sent to judicial remand.
Kurnool SP G Bindu Madhav stated that a police picket has been set up at the Kallukunta village as a precautionary measure and reaffirmed that such incidents will be dealt with utmost severity as per the provisions of the law.
