Newlywed Dalit couple alleges social boycott
MYSURU: In Naguvanahalli village under Srirangapatna police limits, a newlywed Dalit couple alleged that five Dalit families of the village have been socially boycotted by all other families of the same sect. Police are investigating the complaint and have also informed the taluk administration.
BN Puneeth, sub inspector, Srirangapatna Rural police station, said Manoj, 22, and Spoorthi, 21, both Dalits, had recently got married. “Manoj alleged that five Dalit families, his relatives, had been boycotted by all the other Dalits in the village as they opposed the marriage. At the village-level caste panchayat, they had demanded Rs 60,000 as a fine,” Puneeth said.
He added, “These five families alleged that in the recent Ganesha festival, they were not allowed to offer prayers and pujas.”
Police said the other Dalit families had denied the allegation. “There have been complaints and countercomplaints by the five families facing the boycott as well as the other families,” Puneeth said.
