National Commission for Scheduled Castes member meets Dalit rape victim at Doon hospital
Dehradun: Days after a 9-year-old Dalit girl was raped in Tehri, a representative from National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) met the minor victim at Doon hospital on Wednesday. Swaraj Vidwaan, the NCSC member, after meeting the victim told media persons that an inquiry has been initiated in the case and action will be taken against the accused and all those who caused discomfort to the victim.
The development comes after it was reported that the police took the minor victim and the accused to the police station in the same vehicle to record their statements and the doctors allegedly misbehaved with the victim. Commenting on the issue of insensitiveness towards the victim by doctors and the police, Vidwaan said, “This is a serious matter but the police and the doctors handled it callously. Action will be taken against those found guilty.” She added that the commission has already sought details of investigations and medical treatment from the hospital and police.
Vidwaan also revealed that the victim told her that the accused did not just rape her but also tried to kill her. “The minor told me that she was praying to God to save her during the incident and immediately after gaining consciousness, she asked her mother to give her Rs 2, which she could offer to the Almighty.”
The NCSC member also highlighted her concerns regarding the prevalent casteism in the hill state. “Crimes against Dalits are
on an upsurge in the region. Last month, a Dalit man was beaten to death in Nainbagh. Then, an eight-year-old Dalit girl was raped in Dehradun’s Lakhibagh two days ago. And in this case too, the minor Dalit victim was raped by a upper caste man in Tehri,” said Vidwaan.
