Lucknow University teacher loses award after anti-government FB posts
LUCKNOW: A literary award conferred on a Dalit teacher of Lucknow University has been taken back for his alleged anti-government posts on social media.
On February 28, Rajya Karamchari Sahitya Sansthan (State Employees Literary Association) had announced Raman Lal Agarwal award for Ravikant, assistant professor in LU’s Hindi department for his contribution to Hindi literature. The award includes Rs 11,000 and a citation. But on March 6, Ravikant received a letter (TOI has a copy of it) from association secretary Dinesh Chandra Awasthi stating that it was withdrawing the award following a complaint by an NGO.
The letter signed by association secretary Dinesh Chandra Awasthi states that a Delhi based NGO has made several complaints against Ravikant and even attached screenshots of his Facebook account. In the light of the development, the award was being withdrawn, letter added.
Ravikant said “Since the association’s letter refers to my Facebook account, I understand that I have been penalised for posting comments critical of the BJP governments.” While Awasthi refused to comment on the issue, association president and IAS officer Hari Om’s phone went unanswered.
