Look into complaint against SI, court tells SP
Petitioner says he and his son were beaten up at police station
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the Superintendent of Police,Thoothukudi, to took into a case of alleged harassment of a Dalit youth by a Sub-Inspector of Police.
The petitioner, Solaiappan of Melmanthai village in Thoothukudi district, a folk singer, said he, along with his son, participated in a temple festival in their village. He alleged that the SI, who had been posted on duty there, questioned them about their cast. When they said they were Dalits, the SI mocked them and questioned Solaiappan why his son was sporting sunglasses.
The petitioner further alleged that the police took them to the police station and abused them. They beat his son up with lathis and when he tried to intervene, he too was beaten. The police released him later after obtaining his signature on blank papers. He had to rush his son to hospital immediately for treatment, he said.
The petitioner said he had complained to the police about the issue, but no action was taken against the SI. After he made the complaint, the police compelled the hospital to discharge his son, who still required treatment. He sought a direction to the SP to monitor the case.
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh directed the Superintendent of Police to look into the issue and adjourned the case.
