Kolkata traffic police constable opens school for dalits in Purulia
Purulia (West Bengal), Oct 03 (ANI): A Kolkata police traffic constable Arup Mukherjee established a school-cum-hostel for dalit students for free in at Puncha block area of Purulia district. Arup started ‘Puncha Nabadisha Model School’ in 2011 with 15-20 students and now 112 students are currently studying and staying here.
In 1999, after joining Kolkata police, Arup started saving money with an aim to open a school exclusively for the marginalized section of the society. In 2010, he was able to arrange 2.5 lakh rupees, took 1.5 lakh rupees loan and 50,000 rupees from his mother.
With a total of 4.5 lakh rupees he constructed five rooms on a land which was donated free of cost by one of his acquaintances in the village. After attending a Television programme hosted by former Indian Cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly, Arup has been getting a financial help of 25,000 rupees every month.
With that money and 20,000 rupees from his salary, he started running this school.
