Karnal Civil Hospital faces shortage of medicines
Karnal, Patients are at the receiving end at the Civil Hospital here as it is facing shortage of several medicines.
In all, 504 medicines are listed in the essential drugs list (EDL). Of those, 431 are available in the dispensary.
Sources say the hospital is running short of essential medicines such as Amoxyclave capsules, Azithromycin 250, 500 tablets, Diclofenac gel, Antacid syrup, Amitriptyline 10 mg and Sertraline 50 mg tablets, forcing the patients to purchase the drugs from private medical stores.
Moreover, it lacks cardiac medicines, which are needed after a bypass surgery and stenting. The government has also listed 24 medicines for cancer treatment, but none of those is available with the hospital.
“I have to purchase medicines for psychiatric illness from a private medical store as these have been out of stock for the past several days,” said a patient.
Rajesh Kumar said he had come to get cardiac medicine for his father, but he had been asked to purchase it from outside the hospital.
Dr Piyush Sharma, Principal Medical Officer, admitted some medicines were out of stock. “We have sent a demand for combination medicines and these will be available at the hospital after April 1,” he said. He, however, said they have sufficient stock of general drugs of BP and sugar.
