Irregularities detected in SC/ST hostels
Large-scale irregularities were detected by officials of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) during inspection of hostels for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students across the State on Saturday.
The surprise inspections, supervised by VACB Director B.S. Mohammed Yasin, brought to light siphoning off of funds allocated as monthly pocket money at the hostels in Kollam, Kottayam and Kozhikode. Most hostels in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam and Idukki lacked hygiene and had dirty watertanks and bathrooms.
Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe hostels in certain districts were found to be serving substandard food for the inmates, while some facilities in Kollam and Pathanamthitta failed to supply food in adherence to the prescribed menu. Besides, some hostels in Pathanamthitta and Malappuram were found to have claimed funds after presenting inflated statistics of food that has been supplied.
The Vigilance officials also found that most hostels had failed to update stock registers, cash books and other registers. Commodities were also found to have been purchased without purchase bills or vouchers. Besides, the wardens at many hostels were found to have gone on unsanctioned leave without the knowledge of the departments concerned, which apparently failed to conduct inspections. The advisory committees that have been formed to regulate the functioning of hostels rarely convened meetings at many places. The findings of the inspection teams will be submitted to the State government.
