Honour killing: Dalit man’s missing wife and unborn child in danger
Ahmedabad: Five days after honour killing of a 23-year-old Dalit man in Varmor village in Mandal taluka of Ahmedabad, police are still to find whereabouts of the main accused Dashrathsinh Jhala who is on the run with the deceased’s wife and his daughter Urmila Jhala. At the same time, the deceased’s family members and community leaders apprehend that the absconding accused may force her daughter to abort the fetus.
Dalit leader and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani also tweeted on the issue saying that he also apprehends that Urmila and her fetus are in danger.
“In the Mandal Dalit killing case, the woman, who had married a Dalit man, is pregnant. I have strong apprehension that her life and that of the fetus is at risk,” Mevani tweeted on Friday afternoon tagging Gujarat DGP Shivanand Jha.

Meanwhile, police teams visited some hospitals in nearby towns tocheck if the accused had gone there with his daughter. On Monday evening, Haresh was allegedly killed by Dashrathsinh, his son
Indrajitsinh and their six relatives, members of so-called upper caste Darbar community, as they had objection to a Dalit man marrying a girl from their community. The incident occurred when Haresh went there with a team of 181 Abhayam Helpline.
“A team of police checked hospitals in Mandal and nearby towns as they got an input that a man and a woman, who were resembling with Dashrathsinh and Urmila, had visited a hospital in Mandal two days ago,” said a cop.
Top police officials, including DSP, SC/ST cell, P D Manwar, are tightlipped over the issue.
The risk to Urmila and her fetus could be ascertained with the fact that her brother had decided to kill Haresh after he came to know that she was carrying a Dalit man’s fetus.
