Guv: Will ensure higher edu for transgender community

Patna: Governor-cum-chancellor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday stressed the need of ensuring higher education facilities for the transgender community and steps to be taken by the state education department in this regard.
He was speaking at a seminar to discuss the ‘rights of the transgender community to access higher education’, organised by an NGO, Dostana Safar.
The seminar highlighted the importance of the transgender community’s right to higher education. The governor stressed the need to treat the transgender community with dignity. He also highlighted the struggles of the transgender community in getting enrolled in universities.
“I will take this as my responsibility to call upon a meeting with the national education boards with an aim to discuss the measures that must be taken to create a safe space for the transgender community and their right to seek proper education without any discrimination.” the governor said.
Professor Rambachan Rai, MLC, mentioned the discussions held in the meeting of Mandan Mishra and Shankaracharya and hoped the governor would take steps for higher education of the transgender community.
Reshma Prasad, secretary of Dostana Safar, talked about the need for people from transgender community to use education as a key to make their lives better.
Krishna Thakur, a transgender, said: “It took lots of hard work and courage to qualify BPSC exams and reach where I am now.”
