Dalits got justice after 21 years: Dalit youth and 4 women were beaten up while grazing goats, the culprits were imprisoned for 5 years
Dalits have got justice after 21 years in a case of assault in Jhansi. In 2000, in the case of assaulting a Dalit youth and 4 women while grazing goats, the court has sentenced two convicts to 5-5 years’ imprisonment. Both were fined Rs 11500-11500. Failure to pay will result in additional imprisonment of 6 months. This decision has been given by SCST Act Special Judge Indu Dwivedi.

On 26 May 2000, Mohan and Kanjayana, residents of Chitawat, were grazing their goats. Then Sunil son Ramcharan and Raju son Halkai Pal, resident of Kanja, came to the farm with tractor and started driving away their goats. When the young man and the woman refused, both of them started abusing while speaking casteist words. When both of them started returning the goats, they beat them with sticks.
On shouting, Uma, Rambai and Ramdevi of Chitawat came and started saving. Then the accused also beat him up. Later other people came and rescued him. The accused threatened that if they went to the police station to report, they would kill them. After the assault, the injured were rushed to Mauranipur Hospital. Mohan had filed a case. The police arrested both the accused on June 5, 2000.
Punishment sentenced in 5 sections including SCST
The matter was going on in the court for 21 years. During this, Kanjana died. The convicts Sunil and Raju have been sentenced to 6 months for assault, 5 years for threatening to kill, 4 years for SCST Act, one and a half year for intentional insult with intent to cause breach of peace. All the sentences will run concurrently.
