Dalit youth murder case: 10 get double life imprisonment

Coimbatore: A special court in the cadre of district judges for the trial of cases under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, in the city on Monday awarded double life imprisonment to 10 accused and single life imprisonment to two accused in a dalit youth murder case.
S Thamaraiselvan, 27, of Chinnaraj Nagar at Rathinapuri in the city, was murdered by the accused on April 3, 2016, over previous enmity.
Thamaraiselvan was staying in a rented room with his younger brother S Prasanth, 23, a two-wheeler mechanic. The duo hailed from Theni district. Thamaraiselvan was working as a civil engineer in a private construction company.
On the fateful day, Prasanth was travelling on a motorcycle with his friend around 4pm when K Vignesh and V Karthi, of Sampath Street at Rathinapuri, intercepted and beat them over previous enmity.
Prasanth immediately informed Thamaraiselvan who rushed to the spot and beat the two men. Thamaraiselvan and Prasanth returned to their home.
Around 5pm, Vignesh and Karthi came along with 12 friends and murdered Thamaraiselvan.
Police arrested the 14 accused in connection with the murder and the case trial was held at the special court.
During the trial period, one of the accused, K Jaisingh, from Neelikonampalayam near Singanallur, died.
Judge K Vivekananthan on Monday awarded double life imprisonment to Vignesh, 29, D Mahendran, 33, Karthi, 28, Kavashkhan, 32, Suresh, 33, Naveen Kumar, 29, V Prakasam,30, Vimal Kumar, 30, ‘Ondrai’ Gowtham, 30, and S Kalaivanan, 32. Karuppu Gowtham, 29, and Simon Christopher, 32, were awarded single life imprisonment.
Police said the convicted 12 people were notorious rowdy elements. One of the accused K Vijay, 27, was acquitted from the case.
