Dalit youth killed in Maharashtra, 7 arrested for celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti

Mumbai, June. 04: The inhuman incident of killing a 24-year-old Dalit youth for celebrating Constitution architect Dr.BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary took place in Bondhar Haveli village of Nanded district of Maharashtra. Maharashtra police arrested seven people on Saturday in connection with the case.
This incident took place two days back in Bondhar Haveli village of Nanded district. The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Akshay Bhalerao, news agency PTI reported. The tragedy took place on Thursday evening during the marriage ceremony of the accused upper caste community.
Akshay Bhalerao was going there with his brother-in-law during the wedding ceremony of the upper caste community, when a group saw him and attacked him. Some of them were holding swords, said some of the police officers. Seeing the two, one of the accused shouted slogans for their murder.
Akshay Bhalerao and his brother Akash saw them and shouted “These people should be killed for celebrating भीम्मा जयंति (Ambedkar’s birthday on April 14) in the village”. Along with it, the brother of the deceased was also killed. Akshay Bhalerao, who was in a critical condition after being heavily assaulted, was taken to a nearby hospital. However, before being admitted to the hospital, he was declared dead, police officials informed.
An FIR has been registered against the accused under the Indian Penal Code for murder, murder, गलभे and हल्ले and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (दौर्जन्य टाड़ी) Act. The officer said that seven accused have been arrested. Investigation is going on in the matter.
