Dalit rights activists protest against Dharan Sub-Metropolis Mayor Harka Rai
Dalit rights activists on Wednesday have staged a protest in Maitighar against Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor Harka Sampang Rai, for his derogatory remarks against the community.
Rights groups and organisations have organised Jatiya Birodh Sabha demanding actions against Rai and all those who insult communities on grounds of caste.
“Regressive comments from a person at a public post like him is unacceptable,” said the leader of the protest Mitra Pariyar, also a Sociologist.
Everyone, be it Dalit or non-Dalit, should speak out and protest against discriminatory comments and statements, added Pariyar.
Rai had made a series of derogatory remarks against the Dalit community on Facebook in early December. Following his remarks, the National Dalit Commission had written to the Ministry of Home Affairs recommending legal action against him.
In response to a recommendation on Facebook, he had written that the National Dalit Commission had no relevance and should be scrapped.
