Court allows taking gangrape accused to central forensic lab
Ludhiana; Judicial Magistrate Ankit Airi today allowed the prosecution’s plea to take accused Jagroop Singh, who was arrested in connection with a gang-rape case, to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Chandigarh, for taking voice samples.
A 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped by 10 men near Issewal village on the banks of the Sidwan canal, about 15 km from Ludhiana, after the car she was travelling in with her friend was stopped and she was dragged out.
Passing the order, the court held that the accused be taken to the CFSL on March 14 in the supervision of the jail authorities. Earlier the court had allowed the request of the police for taking voice samples of the accused for comparing it with the recorded voice produced by witness Jaspreet Singh from whom ransom was allegedly demanded.
“The voice sampling could not be done as the CFSL authorities have apprised the Dakha police that laboratory procedure is required for voice sampling. So we decided to move the application before the court,” said Jagraon SSP Varinder Pal Singh Brar.
“It is hereby directed to the investigating authorities that the same shall formulate a proposed passage of a written text required to be read out by the accused for the purpose of giving voice samples and the said passage may contain words, but not the exact sentences appearing in the disputed conversation,” says court order. Special Public Prosecutor BD Gupta said the voice sampling procedure would be done strictly as per the instructions of the court.
