Contentious fence that sparked casteist row removed
The Revenue Administration with adequate police protection on Friday removed the contentious fence that prevented access to Dalits to their residential areas in Alagumalai Panchayat in Pongalur Union of Tirupur district.
The removal of the fence came in just a day after the Communist Party of India(Marxist) announced that it would remove the fence on November 4, if the administration failed to do the same.
The fence was erected by a functionary of the ruling party across a concrete road that was used by Dalit people at Alagumalai village in Tirupur.
The CPI (M) alleged that the fence was erected in a move to keep the listed communities at bay from the rest of the community.
Muthukannan, district secretary of CPI(M) in Tirupur, issued a statement on Wednesday stating that the fence will be forcibly removed by its workers on Sunday if authorities fail to do the same.
According to him, an iron fencing was erected across the concrete road after it was closed by a senior functionary of the AIADMK and his men with the support of the police on October 10. He alleged that the road was closed with an intention to block way for Dalit people and casteist forces used Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department for the same.
Following the developments on Thursday, Tirupur Sub-Collector Shravan Kumar along with Palladam DSP and police reinforcements visited the place and after ascertaining the facts removed the fence.
