Mumbai’s suburban local trains have once again come under scrutiny after a video showing a violent clash inside a late-night local train went viral on social media. In the incident, a passenger and transgender persons were reportedly involved in a physical altercation inside a local train. The viral footage shows two transgender passengers allegedly assaulting a passenger during the confrontation. The reason behind the fight remains unclear. ALSO READ: School Holiday: Are Schools & Colleges Closed In Mumbai, Thane And Palghar As Heavy Rains Continue? The video has triggered discussions about passenger safety and security in Mumbai’s suburban railway network, which witnesses heavy daily footfall. Railway authorities have taken note of the incident and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the clash. Officials are investigating the video to determine what led to the confrontation. The incident comes days after two separate cases of violence on Mumbai locals, including the attack on two youths and another video showing a fight between two groups, sparked concerns among passengers. Previously, a video showing a violent clash between passengers in a Churchgate-Virar local train went viral on social media. The incident reportedly took place inside a crowded men’s compartment, creating panic among fellow commuters for some time. The video shows passengers involved in a heated argument, which soon escalated into a physical fight involving kicks and assault. While the exact reason behind the dispute is unclear, it is suspected that the argument may have started over limited standing space or accidental pushing in the crowded compartment. Other passengers were seen attempting to intervene and calm the situation. The repeated incidents of violence inside local trains have raised questions about maintaining security and preventing such conflicts during journeys. Pawar vs power: NCP (SP) leaders push for BJP alliance as Sharad Pawar resists

As Supriya Sule categorically rejected reports of an NDA switch, sources say six of the NCP (SP)’s 10 Lok Sabha MPs and nine of its 10 MLAs favour joining hands with the BJP. MUMBAI: Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) appears to be facing internal divisions over the prospect of joining hands with the BJP, with party sources indicating that while Pawar wants to keep his distance, several Lok Sabha MPs and MLAs favour exploring an alliance with the ruling party. According to party sources, the 86-year-old Pawar has categorically conveyed to senior party leaders that he is not comfortable joining hands with the BJP at the fag end of his political career. However, those in favour of the move believe they should initiate talks with the BJP and assess what it is willing to offer. The buzz in the Opposition camp comes weeks after six MPs of Maha Vikas Aghadi ally Shiv Sena (UBT) switched to ruling Shiv Sena. The NCP (SP)’s stand on the BJP’s proposed Delimitation Bill is likely to emerge as a litmus test for Sharad Pawar and his daughter, Supriya Sule, signalling where the party intends to position itself in Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape. The issue gained prominence on Wednesday after Sule, the party’s working president, said there would be “little reason to oppose” the Bill if it proposed a uniform 50% increase in seats across all states. Sule, however, said any decision on supporting the legislation would be taken only after discussions within the INDIA bloc. Rejecting speculation about the NCP (SP) joining the ruling alliance, Sule said the media had been predicting her swearing-in and ministerial portfolio for the past 12 years. Notably, the NCP (SP) has 10 Lok Sabha MPs. Of them, six are reportedly keen to join the BJP-led government at the Centre, while two — Sule and Amol Kolhe — are opposed to the move. Similarly, nine of the party’s 10 MLAs are said to favour joining hands with the BJP, with Rohit Pawar the lone dissenter. Interestingly, Rohit has conveyed to the party leadership that he is prepared to make sacrifices and continue fighting the BJP. He has also said that he is less concerned about three years in power than the next 30 years of his political future and that of Maharashtra. Rohit, the grandnephew of Sharad Pawar, has also opened a channel with the Congress and is in direct touch with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should he decide to join the party. Rahul is also reportedly keen to induct Pawar into the Congress because of his willingness to take on the BJP. Meanwhile, senior NCP leader Jayant Patil has reportedly opened channels of communication with the BJP through two senior leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde. “Patil has the support of six Lok Sabha MPs and nine NCP SP MLAs to initiate the talks with the BJP. In this talk, there are two thoughts, one given by the BJP that the NCP SP should merge with the NCP, not to be a separate entity of the NDA, but others are not keen to be with the NCP. They want to keep their separate identity,” a source told TNIE. Patil, meanwhile, said he met Fadnavis only to discuss an issue in his constituency, and asserted that there was no discussion in the Sharad Pawar-led party about joining the NDA. “There are no discussions going on in our party about joining the NDA. I met the chief minister only to raise the issue of the Islampur municipal council president, whose election has been declared invalid. (Deputy Chief Minister) Eknath Shinde was in Delhi, so I sought the chief minister’s appointment. The meeting lasted barely five to ten minutes, and there was no political discussion,” he told reporters. Patil’s meeting with NCP leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare in the presence of CM Fadnavis is understood to be part of the first proposal for a merger, sources said. However, Patil denied reports that he met Patel or Tatkare during his visit to the CM’s residence. Interestingly, Patel and Tatkare are also said to favour bringing Patil and the NCP (SP) into the NCP to curb the growing influence of Parth Pawar and make the party’s existing power structure more democratic. According to sources, the letter challenging Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar’s election as NCP national president is intended to convey that she can be replaced if required. Maharashtra TET paper leak: Rahul Gandhi’s 3 demands to CM Fadnavis

NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday intensified his attack on the Centre over recurring examination paper leaks, citing the cancellation of the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and accusing the system of failing lakhs of candidates. In a post on X, Rahul made three demands to the Maharashtra government, urging an immediate announcement of a fresh examination date, strict action against those responsible for the leak, and relief measures for affected aspirants. “Maharashtra TET paper leaked, exam cancelled. 6 lakh candidates left in limbo. Two weeks have passed, no trace of a new date. The leakers roam free, the system remains spotless, and the one paying the price is the one who toiled with honesty,” Rahul wrote. He said the affected candidates were future teachers who had spent years preparing for the examination, paid application fees, and travelled to distant examination centres, only to be left waiting “without a date, without answers.” “These are the country’s working and future teachers, the ones who hold India’s future in their hands – these are the very people who prepared year after year, filled out forms, paid fees, traveled to far-flung centers. And now they’re just waiting, without a date, without answers,” he wrote. Further addressing Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Rahul Gandhi issued a three-point demand, making an immediate announcement of a fresh Maharashtra TET schedule the centrepiece of his appeal. He urged the state government to announce the new examination date without further delay, take strict action against those responsible for the paper leak instead of penalising candidates, and grant age limit relaxations to aspirants whose eligibility may have been affected by the postponement. He wrote, “Chief Minister ji, three things, today itself: Timeline: Announce the new TET date right now; Accountability: Action against those responsible for the leak, not against the candidates; Protecting the future: Those whose year was ruined by this leak should get age limit relaxations.” Rahul said the government must act swiftly to restore confidence among lakhs of candidates left in uncertainty following the cancellation of the examination, arguing that the burden of administrative failures should not fall on those who had prepared honestly for years. He further said, “The mistake is the institution’s, the punishment the candidate’s, this is not justice.” He also announced that he would hold a public interaction on July 17 in Dehradun, where he would address the broader issue of paper leaks. “On July 17 in Dehradun, I will discuss the growing crisis of paper leaks with you in detail. The time has come for an education revolution, to build a system where the youth reap the rewards of their hard work, not the failures of the system.” Paper leaks have emerged as a recurring political issue in recent years, with opposition parties repeatedly accusing governments of failing to ensure the integrity of competitive examinations and recruitment tests, while demanding stronger safeguards and accountability. NCP (SP)-BJP ties under spotlight after report of confidential Jayant Patil-Vinod Tawde meeting

Senior leaders reportedly discussed a possible alliance; NCP (SP) denies reports of extending support to the BJP. MUMBAI: Following a report by The New Indian Express indicating that the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) is initiating talks with the BJP, it has emerged that senior party leader Jayant Patil and BJP General Secretary Vinod Tawde reportedly held a confidential meeting to discuss the blueprint of a potential alliance. It was reported that Sharad Pawar has initiated parallel tracks of discussion: one with the Congress regarding a potential merger, and another with the BJP-led NDA over extending legislative support.. The NCP (SP) has eight Lok Sabha MPs and 10 MLAs in Maharashtra. According to sources, the BJP is keen to secure the party’s support in Parliament for the smooth passage of key legislation. A source familiar with the discussions claimed the NCP (SP) had sought one Union Cabinet berth for Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule and two ministerial berths in the Maharashtra government for Jayant Patil and Jitendra Awhad. “NCP (SP) majority of the MPs and MLAs are in the opinion of joining hands with the power to get the development fund and survive in competitive politics. The party is keen on important ministerial portfolios. Once that is finalised, an official announcement of support to the NDA will be made,” the source said. However, both Jayant Patil and Supriya Sule denied reports of any such meeting or alliance discussions. Patil said political leaders routinely interact across party lines, while Sule said, “We are also part of various government-constituted committees where different party MPs are members. We do attend such meetings and meet the MPs of ruling and opposition parties; that does not mean we are joining them.” NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar also dismissed speculation about supporting the BJP. “The NCP (SP) is a secular and progressive party while the BJP harps on a communal agenda. Therefore, there is no question of extending support to the BJP and being part of the NDA,” he said. Meanwhile, Congress leaders have reportedly begun internal consultations on the possibility of an NCP (SP)-Congress merger. According to party sources, Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary K C Venugopal have spoken individually with senior Maharashtra Congress leaders to seek their views. Some leaders, sources said, expressed concern that an NCP (SP) merger could allow its leaders to dominate the party’s organisational affairs and decision-making, and urged the leadership to deliberate carefully before taking a call. Dalits’ share of budget spent on other schemes: Maharashtra government under fire for allocating ₹2.8 crore to the Warkari Mahamandal!

VBA strongly objects: Dalits’ budget worth crores diverted to other schemes, scholarships and welfare schemes still pending Mumbai – The Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) has strongly protested the Maharashtra government’s decision to approve financial assistance of ₹2.80 crore from the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department’s budget for the Ashadhi Ekadashi festival through the Chief Minister’s Warkari Mahamandal. The party alleges that the budget earmarked for the welfare of the Scheduled Caste community is being continuously diverted to other schemes, adversely affecting the rights and development of the Dalit community. Through a Government Order issued on July 2nd, the Maharashtra Government has granted administrative and financial approval of a total of ₹2.8 crore (280 lakh rupees) to the Chief Minister’s Warkari Mahamandal to provide assistance of ₹20,000 per Dindi to 1,400 Dindis accompanying 10 palanquins of Maan during the Ashadhi Ekadashi Wari in Pandharpur. According to the Government Order, this amount will be provided from the “Chief Minister’s Warkari Mahamandal’s Assistance Grant (2235D963)” under the Budget Head 2235 – Social Security and Welfare of the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department. The order also states that this amount will be distributed through the Chief Minister’s Warkari Mahamandal, with the Divisional Commissioner, Pune, designated as the Controlling Officer and the Tehsildar (General Administration), Office of the Divisional Commissioner, Pune, as the Drawing and Disbursing Officer. Discrimination and Identity Relationships Criticizing the order, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi’s State General Secretary, Rajendra Patode, alleged that the Social Justice Department’s budget, especially funds earmarked for the Scheduled Castes, is being continuously used for schemes that are not directly related to the social, educational, and economic empowerment of the Dalit community. He stated that previously, similar funds were used for the Kisan Samman Yojana, the Chief Minister’s Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, and the Chief Minister’s Tirtha Darshan Yojana, and now, in the same vein, Rs. 2.80 crore has been allocated to the Chief Minister’s Warkari Mahamandal. Patode stated that if the government wishes to implement these schemes, separate provisions should be made for them from the general budget. He alleged that shifting the budget earmarked for the Scheduled Caste community to other items violates constitutional rights. According to him, numerous schemes related to scholarships, education, economic development, and social justice for Dalit students are still pending, while crores of rupees are being spent for other purposes. Diverting the budget allocated for the Scheduled Caste community to other items violates the rights granted by the Constitution. Previously, funds from the Social Justice Department were similarly used for the Kisan Samman Yojana, the Chief Minister’s Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, and the Chief Minister’s Tirtha Darshan Yojana. – Rajendra Patode, State General Secretary, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi The Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi also stated that due to the lack of a separate and effective legal framework for the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan, governments are arbitrarily using this budget. The party alleges that this is why the actual benefits of the funds allocated for the Scheduled Caste community are not reaching the targeted groups. Patode described this as a “financial emergency”-like attack on the rights of the Dalit community and called for a widespread public movement on this issue. However, the Maharashtra government’s administrative decision states that the purpose of this assistance is to provide ₹20,000 per Dindi to the 1,400 Dindis accompanying the 10 palanquins of Maan participating in the Ashadhi Ekadashi Wari in Pandharpur. The preamble states that the Warkari tradition is an important cultural heritage linked to Maharashtra’s social harmony, saint tradition, and public awareness, and given the growing numbers, this assistance is considered necessary for management and facilities. According to the government, the Chief Minister’s Warkari Mahamandal was established to carry out welfare programs for the Warkari community and kirtankars, and as in the past two years, it has been decided to provide grants to the Dindis this year as well. Currently, this decision has sparked political debate over the use of the Social Justice Department’s budget. The Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) has demanded that the budget allocated for the Scheduled Caste community be used only for schemes related to the social, educational, and economic development of that community, and that legal safeguards be ensured to prevent the diversion of such funds to other schemes. Maharashtra postpones TET 2026 on eve of exam after suspected paper leak; CM orders SIT probe

The breach came to light early on Saturday, when police acted on confidential intelligence regarding individuals possessing unauthorised information about the examination papers. The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2026, scheduled to be conducted on Sunday, has been postponed after a leaked question paper was found during a raid in Thane’s Bhiwandi, just a day before the exam. As the development which affected around six lakh candidates followed the national scandal caused by the last month’s leak of the NEET-UG paper, Opposition leaders trained their guns on the BJP-led government, saying it was busy breaking political parties instead of ensuring foolproof examinations. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered the constitution of a Special Investigation Team headed by Thane Joint Commissioner of Police Panjabrao Ugale to probe the paper leak, sources said. Fadnavis spoke to School Education Minister Dada Bhuse and state Director General of Police Sadanand Date and asked them to take strict action against the culprits, they added. The exam was scheduled to be conducted at 1,028 centres across the state on Sunday. The authority said that will be conducted in 37 places and 1028 exam centres across Maharashtra. In an official statement issued on Saturday, the Maharashtra State Examination Council said the test has been postponed to maintain the “transparency and the integrity” of the examination process. “The rescheduled examination date will be declared in the next two to three days,” said Priya Shinde, deputy commissioner of Maharashtra State Examination Council. The breach came to light when the Bhiwandi police, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid at the Diamond Hotel in Bhiwandi in the early hours of Saturday. During the raid, the police found the leaked question papers of the exam in the possession of some individuals. Officials from the Maharashtra State Examination Council were immediately summoned to verify the material. Upon close inspection, it was confirmed that several questions in the possession of the suspects matched the actual question paper drafted for the June 2026 TET. Subsequently, the authorities announced the cancellation of the exam and a criminal case was registered at the Bhiwandi Police Station. Three people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident. The suspects were nabbed from the Sahar airport in Mumbai and police are investigating how they got the exam papers, along with their money transactions. Last year also a similar incident was reported from Kolhapur where the TET question paper was allegedly leaked. Slamming the repeated irregularities in examinations, Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal on Saturday alleged that the BJP-led state government was busy in poaching MLAs and MPs instead of prioritising the future of the youth. He also stated that the Congress will launch a massive protest if the perpetrators are not brought to justice. “If the BJP government fails to take strict actions and find out the source of the leak, then the Congress party will come out on the streets. They (BJP government) cannot even conduct an exam in a proper manner. The BJP is playing with the future of the students,” Sapkal said. ‘Theft of youth’s future’: Congress slams Centre over Maharashtra TET 2026 paper leak

Priyanka Gandhi urged students to raise their voices against recurring exam irregularities, saying, “Until you raise your voice loud and clear, this terror with your future will continue unabated.” The Congress on Saturday slammed the BJP-led government over the postponement of the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)-2026 following allegations of a paper leak, accusing it of repeatedly failing the country’s youth. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi described the development as a betrayal of young aspirants. “Another paper leak. Another exam cancelled. This time, Maharashtra’s TET. “The country’s education and examination system has been turned into a system of extortion, leaving every youngster in the country insecure,” Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X. “This is not just a paper leak, this is the theft of the youth’s future,” he added. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed concern, urging students to raise their voices against recurring examination irregularities. “Youth, wake up!!! Until you raise your voice loud and clear, this terror with your future will continue unabated. You’ve been deceived once again.” she said on X. Referring to a series of examination controversies, Priyanka Gandhi said, “NEET, CBSE, SSC, CUET and now TET. This chain will only stop when you launch a movement and demonstrate your strength. Until that happens, the BJP government and the Prime Minister will have no accountability toward you. They won’t put a curb on corruption in exams, nor will they take responsibility for your future.” Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that exam paper leaks had become a recurring feature under the current government. “It seems determined to score a shameful century. It has already presided over nearly 90 exam paper leaks. Today, another has been reported — this time in Maharashtra, where tomorrow’s TET examination has been cancelled after the paper was leaked,” Khera said in a post on X. “The so-called double-engine sarkar runs on one fuel alone: scams,” he alleged. “For this government, paper leaks have become an industry that it profits from. But for India’s youth, they mean years of hard work, sacrifice and hope being destroyed in a matter of minutes,” he added. Khera further claimed that the government had repeatedly let down young people. “It has stolen their opportunities, toyed with their aspirations and repeatedly betrayed their trust. And perhaps it will be the youth of India who ultimately consign the BJP’s political career to the doldrums. That would be poetic justice,” he asserted. The Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE) postponed the TET-2026, scheduled for Sunday, after a raid in Bhiwandi in Thane district uncovered individuals allegedly in possession of several questions purportedly matching those in the examination paper. Police have registered a case against three persons in connection with the matter. In a statement, the MSCE said it remained committed to conducting examinations with complete transparency. “Given the gravity of the situation and the necessity for an in-depth probe, the exam scheduled for June 28, 2026, has been postponed,” it said. According to the Thane district administration, the suspected breach came to light in the early hours of Saturday after police acted on intelligence inputs about individuals possessing unauthorised information related to the examination paper.
